I never saw the original series and I certainly will not now, given that everybody generally agrees that is is really, really bad (ok, when I was a kid I liked Buck Rogers too, so I might have liked it back then, but now ... I think not). But I am really hooked on the new series. I've watched the entire season 2 at night while staying/sleeping in the hospital when my son stayed there. Needless to say, amazon.co.uk has done a good deal ;-)

Abyss, you can always get the webisodes in the shade of legality (the content was free afaik, though sharing on bittorrent might not be). Check mininova.org.

Spoilers are flying around for Season 4, and it's not even on for another nine weeks
So now I know what happens when they find Earth. It would have been more awesome for it to be a surprise but...man, it's brilliant. Providing it's a real spoiler and not a foiler (which it still could be).

So in BSG...what the heck is the cylons' deal. I mean in the original series the were basically daleks "exterminate the humans...exterminate exterminate" but now they have this crazy god thing going on, and plans within plans and they all know what each other is thinking.
So my questions from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd seasons is (100% inviting crazy theories)
1. What is the baby. Is it really a cylon?
2. Who is the cylon god? Is it some abstract concept like the human gods or do they regard the humans as gods
3. Is Baltar a frackin cylon or not
4. Is the cylon ultimate scheme to integrate fully with human society
5. What are the extra 5 cylon "flavours"?

I've only seen about 3 episodes but my impression is that the god they talk about is the christian god or some future variation of that concept.

you think? Kind of an opposition to the humans multiple deieties (lords of cobol). The cylons are all about their one god stuff...so maybe they're ushering in a new era. a la christianity

I thought it was a part of the whole mysterious new age hollywood idea of robots being as complex as humans, etc. There's something romantic about machines worshipping god and searching for something as pointless as a reason to exist.

I like the whole feeling robot thing.
I think what I like most about the new BSG is that they go way more indepth with the human-robot thing than most shows do. Kind of like how ST TNG did with the Data character. The cylons in BSG are absolutely indistinguishable from humans except for an extreme radiological test. So, if they are identical internally (on almost every level) and are capable of god worship, love, hate, sentience and intelligent thinking, what still sets them apart?
The story keeps making you think that the cylons just want to integrate with the humans and live in peace, but then a plot arc like the New Caprica thing happens and they just become oppressors of the "real" humans. I find the writing totally keeps you guessing about everybody's motivations (especially) the cylons all the time.
Also, totally convinced Baltar is a cylon

3 ~ No way. It would be too easy for him to be a Cylon
4 ~ If it is, they made a bad start by annhialating the 12 colonies
5 ~ Didn't we find out who 4 of them are at the end of Season 3? There is only 1 unknown left! Or is there?!?!?!?

3~ But how did he survive a nuclear explosion on Caprica when the cylon standing right next to him was wiped out?
4~perhaps a conversion mission then.
5 ~ We "found out" but I never was fully convinced that they are definitely cylons. It could be another plot to make them think they are cylons when they actually aren't. Plus, I thought Baltar's cylon test from S1 only found out that whasser-azngirl-name was actually cylon and the rest of the command was human. Baltar's so messed though that he probably didn't even have a real test to begin with

No matter how good BSG is, it doesn't need two threads. Merged.

New to the site (actually waiting with bated breath for the Toll prologue), but spotted this thread.
I love this show, I have similar gripes with Season 3 but overall I liked it a lot. Season 4 should be great and I've avoided looking at any spoilers.

So I'm working my way through Battlestar Gallactica now. I'm about half way through season 2 and I felt a need to went my frustration with this series.
If you respond, for the time being, please avoid posting massive spoilers that aren't hidden.
While I really do like the series and it's concept, it's sort of the anti star trek series, the whole Cylon thing reeeally bugs me.
It doesn't make sense that the Cylons are both manipulating them and experimenting with people while at the same time they're hunting them and trying to exterminate them. It obvious that some kind of communication is going on between the 8 sleeper agents in the fleet(as of the middle of season 2) and the rest of the Cylon people/civilization/stockpile. They need to figure out what it is exactly they want those wacky machines.
They could easily solve this problem by suggesting that the Cylons are divided into philosophical factions, like Dan Simmons AI-communities from Hyperion/Endymion. The cold "human needs to be destroyed" fraction, the godloving monotheist and the geneticists. I know all these things seem to be connected, but they're doing a piss poor job of stringing things together so far.
The robots, Centurions I think they are called, are so retro '60s sci-fi that I find them incredibly cool, but they are so pathetically flawed. How does a robot manage to miss every tenth shot they fire or something? It's the star wars syndrome all over again. And why does it work to throw cover fire at them? If they notice every move and use all kinds of advanced telemitry, how they hell do you not get cut to pieces by them in a one on one fire fight? And what's up with them being immune to small firearms in one episode and as heavily armored as a soda can in the next?
All this 12 colonies and once upon a time we came from earth stuff. I think they've been way to casual about this story arc and it should have been better integrated into the story before now. It's some interesting stuff, but why Earth will be so much of a better place than Kobolt for example, I don't understand.
Finally, this guy, DOCTORRRRR Gaius Baxter, oh sweet mercifull god, some body kill this guy! Anybody, pleeeease! He caused the death of 99,9% of mankind, that's okay, I sort of like him for that. The problem is all the other things he's up to. Not stopping the first boomer clone, making shit up constantly, generally being a narcissitic prick. Somebody needs to throw that guy out of an airlock and then blast him into pink mist.

Baltar may be my favourite character.
Apt, regarding your question about the confusing and mixed motives of the Cylons - they may be machines, but that does not mean they are a monolithic entity with no internal dissension. This is something that is further explored as the show continues.
Question involving major end-of-third-season spoilers - do not read if you haven't watched.
Better keep any replies behind spoiler tags, please.

The ending of Season Three left me absolutely stunned. And not in a good way. I'm anxious to see how the writers will be able to explain it all without it coming off as too shockingly stupid.

Actually you're right. It was pretty good. I was just too tired and grumpy last night to see it.
I'm still very concerned how they'll work out the whole "new Cylons" thing. It just doesn't make sense for me yet.
