This is worse than hard.

Off the top of my head my favorites are...

Fid
Quick Ben
Kalam
Gruntle
Iron Bars
Whiskeyjack
Antsy
Tehol/Bugg

But i could easily make a list of 20 and still have trouble.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

7. Ganoes Paran - The series began with him and Whiskeyjack. I am confident it will end with him and Whiskeyjack. I'm calling it now.

I have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter at the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain...."

In no specific order.

Toc the Younger
Anomander Rake
Fiddler and Hedge (as a duo before Hedge blew himself to pieces)
Quick Ben and Kalam (again as a duo.)
Cotillion

There's obviously more, but those are the ones I've found myself flipping forwards in the books for, just to see when they'll show up the next time.
Sanity is nothing more than an excuse for being boring.

in no particular order

Anomander Rake
Dasseem Ultor
Tool
Toc the Younger
Hellian
Iskaral Pust
IRON BARS
Cotillion and Shadowthrone
Tehol and Bugg
Karsa Orlong (Not just for his insane fighting but also because his journey has been one of the most fascinating and his character has developed well)
And also just all the marines, the dialogue they have in pretty much every book is awesome

Well, I'm just about midway through HoC ( I know, I'm a newbie) and right now my list is as follows:

1.Fiddler/Strings
2.Gruntle
3.Cotillion
4, Ganoes Paran
5. Whiskeyjack

and the list goes on, but the thread was aptly named TOP 5, so.....
also, order might change

oh, and the series rocks my socks....lol
"Ever had a child? I thought not, giving advice to a child is like flinging sand at an obsidian wall, nothing sticks. The brutal truth is that we each suffer our own lessons - they can't be danced round, nor slipped past. You cannot gift a child with your scars - they arrive like webs, constricting, suffocating, and that child will struggle and strain until they break. No matter how noble your intent, the only scars that teach them anything are the ones they earn themselves"

Why not...

1) Trull
2) Ganoes Paran
3) Cotillion
4) Apsalar/Sorry
5) Toc the Younger

Honorable Mentions go to Coltaine, Hedge, Shi'gal Gu'Rull, Nether/Nil, Quick Ben, Kalam, Fiddler, Cutter/Crokus, Karsa, and Sag Churok and Gunth Mach. I really liked the KC POV, it was a nice change of pace. Too many good characters to choose from in this series.

oh these are so fun though increasingly difficult. So here's my attempt in no specific order. Except for number 1.

Ganoes Paran - I don't know why exactly but the guy just makes me believe that humans are not simply in the malazan series as fodder.

Trull Sengar - Nearly hated the guy in Midnight Tides because he just kept complaining without doing anything, classic Erikson indeed, but then in BH and RG he has stuff to say that I found interesting and then there's the fact he undoubtably earned the title of Knight of Shadow.

Udinaas - I really don't know why or how but this guy never leaves me bored or reading simply for the sake of reading, he's simply awesome.

Crokus/Cutter - Ok, guilty, I'm in love with the Cutter/Apsalar angle and I hope it works out for them in the end or at the very least they confront each other. Aside from that I just think there's something to really be said about Cutter and though there have been times when my faith has wavered I'm going to hold him in this top five.

Silchas Ruin - This was a hard decision to make but lo and behold here we have it. Now, at frist I thought he was a reject Anomander Rake but slowly throughout RG I found that I liked him significantly more which, to be fair, isn't hard since Rake (with KARSA!) are among my least favourite characters that are likely to last to the end. Of course Rake may have difficulty with that now...Anyway, after DoD I discovered that Ruin is more than worth my notice.

Should be noted, though this is likely unnecessary, list is subject to spontaneous change.
The world needs hypocrites...unfortunate but true.

Hmm....tough one. Not sure I have a top five. Would be a lot of 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b. Heh, but I'll give it a shot in no particular order.

Anomandar Rake - Probably self explanatory. He intrigued me from Gardens of the Moon and never stopped throughout the series til the end. It only heightened my respect and admirish for this character when it comes out that he has been planning everything from the start. Everyone likes to think how plotting and conniving Shadowthrone and Cotillion are but Rake is no less and his actions surprised gods and ascendants alike.

Brys Beddict - He's just...natural. No other way to put it. Yes, he is more than a mere mortal now (in a way as we haven't gained a clear picture of what he is...if anything ascendant like at all, unless I missed something) but he still doesn't lose that touch. He just seems like one that someone could relate too. And being the hopeless romantic I enjoyed the parts with the Letharii high mage and her inner thoughts along with his own especially when he said 'I don't bite' and her responding thought to that statement *laughs*

Quick Ben - For obvious reasons. The guy is the man behind the scenes that knows when to show his hand and play his cards. He still leaves you in a mystery along with those characters around him and I enjoy that. It has me anxious to see what unfolds when all the cards are laid bare and revelations take place.

Mael/Tehol - Sorry they come hand in hand. Something intriguing about the maddening genius of Tehol. Love how he is constantly underestimated only to come out on top because he is just that darn intelligent and crafty. Mael is no different and when this elder god is angered it is a thing of beauty.

Tool - I can feel this guys anguish. He has been through so much and suffered for so long and has no choice but to continue forward time after time. Even when he thinks matters in his life have changed for the better it is snatched away or turned upside down. Dassem is to be the Lord of Tragedy yet if any, in my opinion, deserve that title it is Tool.

Several others I enjoy also that could make the list like Fiddler, Bottle, Ganoes, Dassem, Laseen and such. Just shows how good the work is in my opinion.

Ganoes Paran is full of win. In HoC when Sha'ik's mages are talking about his rookie card, you get the idea that this guy is going to play first line minutes for the rest of his career. And then Stevie boy benches him for the rest of the series except for a few powerplay situations in TBH. But you know coach just wants him healthy for the playoffs (aka The Crippled God). Prediction: Ganoes wins the Conn Smythe.

Fiddler. aka Rusty, Ginger Kid, Strings. Probably the best Magic: The Gathering player in Wu. Who doesnt love this bastard?

Bottle is up there of course. Regardless thats hes into beastiality.

Dassem Ultor.

Mappo Runt. The whole Icarium thing turned out to be a big disappointment, but Mappo is like, just a super friend. King of High House Cares A Lot.

Surprised so many people are fans of Ganoes, he isn't very spectacular at anything.

He isn't exceptionally smart, tough, powerful, nice/kind, mean, funny etc..

He is basically a normal soldier who somehow fell into the role of Master of the Deck which is pretty boring considering other people who "earned" their place....

I like the people who earn their way into the story by way of being unique in their ability or character

Favourites

1. Kallor - The man has balls, cursing not one, not two but three elder gods.
2. Gruntle - Not sure, he's just likeable.
3. Azath Raest - He adapts to eternal imprisonment by becoming a comedian.
4. Ceda Quru Kan - Insanely powerful mage, kind of sad he doesn't ascend.
5. Tehol, Bugg or Ublala - The three of them together equal hilarity. Maybe Ublala wins it for the collecting chickens line.

My oh my.

No particular order.

-Kalam Mekhar
-Karsa Orlong
-Kulp. Remember this guy? He sticks out in my head for some reason.
-Kruppe
-Bellurdan, OG Toblakai High Mage. Who crushed the skull of a demon which had just killed a damn god... With his bare hands.... Also, the only one we've seen who could possible have used the one elder warren we know the least about.

"She watched as a Kenryll'ah demon arose beneath Nightchill. Laughing shrilly, the towering, gaunt creature tore Nightchill limb from limb. It had begun feeding by the time Bellurdan arrived. The Thelomen bellowed as the demon raked its knife-like talons against his chest. Ignoring the wounds around his head and the blood that sprayed from them, he closed his hands around the demon's head and crushed it."

Honorable Mentions...

-Hellian, whats not to like?
-Bluepearl
"Two hands closed round his head. One clamped tight over his mouth, and all at once his lungs were full of water. He was drowning. The hand tightened, fingers pinching his nostrils shut. Darkness rose within him, and the world slowly went away.
...'See the way I made the the puke spray out? If that ain't genius I don't know what-'"

-Duiker
-Coltaine
-Baudin
It goes on, and on.

Something about those "K" names too i guess.

Whiskeyjack was my number 1 and then he died.
kalam was my next number 1 and then he became a became a doorstopper in an Azath.
Trull then became my number 1 and then he died.
Anomander Rake then became my number 1 and then he died.

I am not sure i want to say who is on my top 5 now, because SE is obviously reading my mind and killing my favorites.:(

Anyway current top 5 is:

1. Gruntle
2. Cotillion
3. Apsalar/Sorry
4. Fiddler : He is falling on my list tho. Makes no sense that he is still a Sergent, when you consider who their Fists and Captains are.
5. Brys Beddict : Rising fast on my list, so if he survived the end of DoD then he is contender for the top spot.

I am looking forward to see if i just made a deathlist.
