It makes perfect sense that he's still a sergeant, given who their fists and captains are.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Hedge is pretty cool, I just don't feel he really got developed much until later books.

Nice!
(Jen'isand Rul, the Wanderer within the Sword)
'I am the Shield Anvil.' I am Fener's grief. I am the world's grief. And I will hold. I will hold it all, for we are not yet done. <Itkovian>
'We are not born innocent, simply unmeasured.' <Hull Beddict>
'Because a god visits her, Fist. He comes to break her heart. Again and again.'<Nether>
'Fucking dragon.' <Fiddler>
Take my breath. But not this one, not this one. <Apsalar>
'Aye.' It's a good word. I think. More a whole attitude than a word, really. With lots of meaning in it, too. A bit of 'yes' and a bit of 'well fuck' and maybe some 'we're all in this together.' So a word to some up the Malazans. <Sunrise>

Kruppe is not even in those top 10?! How can that be? Oo
Kruppe is one of the most unique characters I've ever seen, I love him.
If Tehol Beddict and Bugg and Kruppe every actually met in person the world explode from the awesomeness!

Actually, admiration for the characters aside, Kruppe and Tehol should/might actually meet some day. They both are somewhat favored by an Elder God each and they both are immensely intelligent, probably the two most brilliant characters in the world. (Love Quick Been but I think he's a tiny step behind them)

1. Icarium... for blowing my mind
2. Hedge... SAPPER SOLIDARITY and for starting the tradition of saving cussers for people you really hate
3. Fiddler... f*cking dragon.
4. Kalyth... not exactly sure why, but I really like her. Yes she's depressed much of the time, but she keeps it mostly to herself, and is a genius of a philosopher. "Do not worship the one or the ten thousand. Worship the sacrifice they make."
5. Onrack... for being complex and interesting in a not-a-bastard kind of way

shortlisted in no order
the Jaghut Army... yes I count them as one character... "What was that war again?"
Bugg... for badassery, genius, and chicken-collecting
Keeper/Urko... for badassery, genius, and fossil-collecting
Whiskeyjack... "I want to be a soldier. A hero." "You'll grow out of it" talk about arc words
Kaminsod... for being a really original villain. not that I actually like him personally.

-Blueiron, who would do this all differently on a different day.
QBFTW!

Warriors:

Dassem
seguleh second
Mok
Rake
...Rell?

Edit: to justify the pick I have to say all these characters matched their reputation
perfectly. SE really impressed me with the way he built them up and crashed them down.
I still advocate SE writes the best swordsmanship scenes ever. Mok made MoI for me...
I suppose I should fit Brys and iron bars in there somewhere but The second
Is way too awesome a character and Rells discipline still sends shivers down my spine

when it comes to Everyone else:

Iskaral Pust
Tehol
Beak
Shadowthrone
...Kallor...

I could mention many more than five, so instead I'll simply say Fiddler.

In addition I would add that Tehol was a fantastic character in his main book, but I imagine it would be difficult to follow that up to any extent - there's only so much you can write about his particular genius I think. Whereas Fiddler could presumably be woven into every story in all the books and still come out well. At least that's the feeling I get.

Toc ... he's such an flavourful character. Humble yet sarcastic, heroic yet aware of his limitations, young yet worldy weary.

Trull ... for his humility. But lets be honest here, lads: Trull vs Clip. The brief scene was short, sharp, and Clippy wacked off. He's the say a little and do a lot person. Humble in his spear skills, yet unsurpassed in output.

Nimander ... for his wonderfully lyrically written Reaper's Gale scenes, and Toll the Hound's childlike innocence. Chhoses to hold back the draconic side within him to remain "mortally" human.

Udinaas ... he's had it hard.

And Padme, for rolling down a sand dune in hot desert heat in Attack of the Clones and getting up with perfect hair and makeup with sweat-free face.
If there were no smart people others wouldn't feel inadequate.

Right?

Pormqual is obviously the best character because so many people hate him. he isn't the best imo but he is the most hated. Best character for me is Paran, dead Hedge, Gesler, Tavore and Tehol Beddict

I also have a soft spot for the mule. It set up camp. Mogora looked at it, and blinked disbelieving.

It really did set up camp.
