Yes, it gave him a connection to QB's power.

The impression I got from the books, is that Hood was a very old God. He was probably one of the first if not THE first "regular" God. As in a God who came by his power via the act of worship and Ascension, rather then always actually existing as an Elemental force, like an Elder God. When the Tsite arrived at the start of MT, Scabby mentioned that the Jaghut were scattered. Thats after the war against death. So its before the rest of the regular non-elder Gods. Hood was lord of death then.

And of course, Hood may be older still. We don't know how long he was the Jaghut leader, before the Jaghut went to war against death.

hoods old sure, but is he togg and fanderay old? is he d'rek old? i don't think so. i think the beast gods were the first to follow the trajectory you describe, outside of elemental forces.

D'rek may actually be a modern manifestation of one of those elemental forces that pre-date even the elder gods.

It certainly seems as tho the Jaghut War on Death, in fact the entire jagjt civilization, pre-dated any other civilization we've read of. It did appear that the Jaghut were already broken as a people by the time the KC invaded, and this WAY before the Tiste invasion, Imass First Empire or anything else that followed.

While we don't know exactly when Hood first manifested as Hood - it could have been a long time after the War on Death, that would make him older than most Elder Gods.

Just butting into the thread after reading the first page. I finished the book this afternoon and all I can think about is: Quick Ben, dead and ascended?

There is no way SE is just leaving him in the crater at this point. If he is dead, has he ascended with the rest of the Bridgeburners (or should that be Bridgeburners v1.0) and what kind of mischief can he get up to if so? If he isn't dead, then what the hell will it take to kill him? Quick Ben is the primary Malazan mystery that I need the answer to.

Anyway, I was a whinger after RG and TtH. After this one, I am firmly back on board. Stormy and Ges riding Che'Malle at the head of a lizard army. Brilliant.

If Quick ascends there's three options and I'm not sure which one will take place. Either:
~ all twelve souls ascend into twelve ascendents
~ only his soul ascends
~ all twelve ascend and remain one

I dunno Mezla, not sure if he's not ascended in the first place...but it's good that you're back on board again :)

QB is not dead. That much i'm certain of. Even the crater is uncertain, because opinions vary on whether that was something QB did, a Skykeep strike or an entire Fury zapping at him with their electro-zapper guns.

I leave the fine details of that to SE to blow our minds with. I'm betting on a last minute show up and save the day sort of thing, possibly along with Tayshrenn, who was supposedly lost in RCG.

The 'ascended' thing is horridly complicated because of his whole complicated origin. For all we know there may be any number of ascendents, gods, elder gods and/or Baldwins already in the mix.

And what happens if twelve otherwise mortal souls all ascend at the same time? he could literally become his own pantheon.

QB is like an itch. 9 books and he is one of the few characters who has steadily become a bigger and bigger questionmark.

I think QB is ascended, and has been ascended for a long time, probably already in Raraku. He has never been described as old despite serving for a long, long time. Fiddler is getting grey, Kalam complains of getting old, but QB just doesn't seem to change despite taxing himself an awful lot of the time and pissing off just about every powerful god in the pantheon.

There is ascended and there is ascended.

Just by virtue of being a High mage with 12 souls, QB is an ascendent.

The question mark now is whether he pulled off a really clever escape, or 'died' but ascended further.

Plus, just to complicate things, post TB into RG, almost dying vs Iccy moved QB a chunk up the power ladder. Anyone's guess what might come from another near-death.

- Abyss, near-lunch.

I think the vitality and immunity to ageing is simply him being a mage. I don't recall any mages feeling or showing the signs of ageing. Kellenvahd had a walking stick but that was an affectation rather than something he needed. Furthermore, seeing as he can use Denul he probably performs those vitality preserving treatments on himself

I....loved....it.

Just one annoyance-I know this is the first of the two-parter, but the addition then forgettance (is that a word?) of Seren Pedac annoyed me just slightly.

Oh yeah, and I also think QB is alive. The dude is slipperier than a ctafish in a jar of vaseline. Seeriously, the BH being ripped to pieces by the Nah'Ruk was heartbreaking, in a way. This army kept on scraping through, and bang! Keneb's dead, Ebron's dead, Gudd's dead, Sunrise is dead....strewth.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

I know the quote about the timeline has been attributed as a nod to the forum.. has anyone mentioned the bit where Shoaly has his feet in the fire?

'Am I done yet, Primly?'
'Crispy bacon, I'd wager.'
'Gods, I love bacon.'

May just be a bit of a coincidence, but hey, we've had plenty of bacon threads..
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Not quite what I meant. The proposed meeting with Shadowthrone never eventuated.

If SE reads the Inn enough to see all the bacon threads then he procrastinates worse than me when he is supposed to be writing. Which means The Crippled God can be finished by Christmas if he pulls his finger out!

All SE would have to do to see a bacon thread at any given time would be to simply enter the Inn. The happy thread counts, because bacon surely does make me happy.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.
