:D

The ambitions and aims of the books were different, but the problems that stopped them from achieving the aims were similar - irregular, lurching pace, plot threads that just seemed there to fill space, too many minor PoVs that prevented getting too involved in any of them.

I'm not going to try to argue which is better, since that's all a matter of personal opinion and unprovable to anyone else. I will say this though, I enjoyed AFFC more than TtH. Well, maybe not the last 200 pages or so of TtH, which were great, but as a whole, I liked AFFC more. THere were parts of TtH where I felt i was slogging through just to get to the end, but enjoyed the entirety of AFFC.

I thought the same thoughts when I began it, but A Game Of Thrones ramps up about halfway through and there are a couple of fantastic scenes, (one with Daenerys and Visrys and Khal Drogo that I thought was particularily telling). ACOK gets better and as far as I am concerned the 3rd book ASOS is the best of the best!

Are there many deaths to look forward to?

I'd hate for the thread to turn into a comparison between MBotF and ASoIaF. Series' aren't the same and we wouldn't want them to be!

There are some deaths to look forward to in A Game of Thrones, and there are some other deaths which you might not. A Clash of Kings is particularly bloody, if I remember correctly.

The thrird book with
Spoiler
I was so angry with you know who that I didn't read any more that day.

Modgod edit because that's a fairly major book 3 spoiler there plus any opportunity to highlight Apt's flaws to the world should be exploited...

Yeah, I was so pissed off when I read it. I wanted to strangle him (GRRM and you know who) for doing it. Totally ruined my day. Good for the plot though.

Guys, I really suggest you Spoiler out
Spoiler
stuff. I remember I made a similar thread to this when I was reading through ASoIaF for the first time and people telling me of its existence ruined the surprise...

I am about 1/3 of the way through A Game of Thrones. I think I read around these parts that A Song of Ice and Fire is an alright series but I don't pay enough attention and get him and Terry Goodkind confused. So far it is a story about obnoxious children with pet wolves, idiot nobility and paedo-porn.

Does it get better? Does it continue the theme of every chapter being from the perspective of a different character? I assume as the kids grow older, they might get a bit more depth but judging by the quality of current adults, I am not convinced. What are the redeeming features of the series? I am yet to find them and have to put the book down every couple of chapters to have a silent rant. If one more child cries into the fur of a pet wolf, I might have to stop reading completely.

Bestow me with your wisdom, Malazites.

You should not need to be convinced to like a book. Read the book, not just 1/3 of it, if you don't like it don't continue. :GA:

I don't need to be convinced. I just like nattering with this lot and forums don't generally work unless people ask for questions and opinions!

I'm about half way through now. I am slightly warming to Tyrion but otherwise, I am hoping for violent deaths for the rest of the characters particularly Catelyn Stark.

In my opinoin, GRRM is overrated I'm not saying he is not good, but that he is not the best fantasy writer, nor is Fire/Ice the best series. I think that he is quite anti-climatic. I'll read what I think should be a very exciting scene, and I"m just not very moved. He doen't have any revolutionary ideas that he brings into the mix and once you get attatched to a character (yes, his characterization is excellent) he kills them off and you have to try to get attached to another character. I don't mind characters dying, but when someone makes a name for himself as an author who kills off all of his characters, I think your taking it a little far. Don't get me wrong, I like these books (I'd say my top 5-10), but I can't understand why people think he is the best.

It's the characterization that has built his reputation. he series has flaws, as they all do, but damn, he can make a compelling character.

Erm I actually believe GRRM has more deaths than SE and he usually doesn't ressurects so many of them as SE does. Although in AGoT there is actually only one major death. And I don't think I've spoiled anything since Mez wanted to know if there were lots of deaths in the book.

Yes i remember that, having not quite got to that part by that time. Oh well im not usually bothered by spoilers that much. OT ASOIAF is definitely one to read, myself i didnt really mind AFFC as a lot of series slow down for a bit and though i did want to know what happened with the other POV the ones provided were good enough i felt. So basically yeah it does change from just the kids playing with their dogs

In our defence...

OK there's no defence. But the first three ASOIAF volumes are very strong books, well worth the read Mez B)
