Films that should have been great.

So, currently watching Kingdom of Heaven.
it's well paced, well scripted, fantastically shot, but there is one rather gaping flaw in the film.
Orlando Bloom can't carry this film. Everyone else in it acts his socks off.
Liam Neeson, Edward Norton, Alexander Siddig, everyone, they're all damned good.
But Orlando Bloom just can't quite manage it. This film should be on a par with Spartacus, or Ben-Hur, an honest to gods old fashioned
epic that should enter the public conciousness the way Gladiator did.
but no, because of one flaw - Orlando Bloom.
In a similar vein, the 2004 version of King Arthur with Clive Owen - i really enjoyed this film,
okay there were a few dumd points - if going beyond the wall was such a big deal what the **** was the pope's godson doing
three days north of it?
But then, just when I can't understand why the film got such a poor response, we're treated to an utterly ****ing abyssmal speech from
arthur after his wedding, that really spoils the whole film for me.
so there you have it. Two films that, in my opinion, could have been great but for one thing - a shallow performance in one,
piss-poor scriptwriting in the other.
Anyone else have any films they feel this way about?

That King Arthur was dreadful. The standard of acting was just shocking. I gave up after 20mins or so, it was too painful.
Next with Nicholas Cage was so disappointing. The ending was essentially "and it was all a dream." Incredibly lazy bit of scriptwriting to allow plenty of drama without having to tie up any loose ends. Even in primary school I was told off for using endings like that. Dreadful ending to a promisign film.

King Arthur was truly appalling. And I say this as someone who is absolutely obsessed with all things Arthurian. It was just so wrong on so many different levels.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. you know, another thing about kingdom of heaven (its still on) -
they should make a sequel about the whole richard the first / Saladin thing, with the actor who played Saladin reprising his role,
as he's excellent.

All the Superhero movies aside that all drive me crazy, one film that should have been Awesome was "The Terminator Film Who's Name Shall Not Be Mentioned".
The characters where unbelievable and didn't create any form of sympathy with the audience. The Terminators were silly and had none of the scary, mechanical behaviour of the first films. The plot was half ass'd and generally the manuscript had holes so big Schwarzenegger could have driven his hummer through it.
The biggest and most annoying one being that the machine killer shoots the Arnold bot in the start of the film... AND HE DOESN'T DIE!
What they should have done was to use the Comic book evolution of the ideas and had the human rebels sending scores of Arnold terminators back through time in waves, trying to stop the machine killing terminator. THAT would have been cool.

Even though I am one of those that actually loved them, fanatic as I am, the matrix sequels could have been so much better. *sigh* They pretty much own most movies out there even so, though.

The Matrix 2 and 3 were the most unneccesary film ever. I just watch number 1 and pretend it ends there. Its a perfectly serviceable ending, hell, its a good ending. But then they spoiled it with the money making ventures in shit form that were 2 and 3.

See, that's where I disagree. I truly enjoyed the storyline surrounding the Matrix trilogy.
I still heart Goodkind.

I didn't think that Orlando Bloom was that bad, but but he was definately worse than the rest of the acting in that movie, which was phenomenal.
About King Arthur: anything with Keira Knightly in it is going to make the movie much, much worse. STOP TALKING OUT OF YOUR NOSE!!!
I'm with the crowd that like the 2-3 movies in the Matrix (although the computer generated fight scenes were really fake). Not as good as #1 naturally, but I didn't think they were crap either.
I'll go with "The Departed" for myself. I don't know what it was about this movie that made me not like it. I guess with the cast,Scorsese directing it, and the fact that I love that "type" of movie, I just thought it would be a lot better.

Haha so true, she is terrible. It's almost painful watching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies because she's in it, and Orlando Bloom is a terrible actor. Johnny Depp saves the day though (as always).
I don't agree with you on the Departed though. I watched it for the first time last night, and loved it. The ending was a bit annoying, as everyone just died, but Alec Baldwin (who's amazing) going nuts at the camera dude and
Spoiler
A film that could've been great but wasn't: 21. It had a cool premise - people "illegally" counting cards - but had to turn it into some teen drama. The acting was terrible (except for Spacey and Fishburne [sp.?]), the script was crap and the ending sucked. Thoroughly disappointed.

I'll go for the obvious - Star Wars prequels I and II, but especially I.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Nice spoilers there brah. I'm sure everyone who hasn't seen the movie will love to have the surprise ending ruined by you. Thumbs up

I, for one, wouldn't have had the ending ruined after he spoilered it if you hadn't quoted it. Thanks, dude.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Took care of that spoiler for you.
Good thing it was a The Departed spoiler, it would have been sad if Trouble had spoiled a good film for Illy.

I thought the Jacket was pretty awesome. Not that she carried the film on her shoulders, but she didn't really fuck it up either.

As for movies that should have been better. The final Lord of the Rings movie was ridiculous. The story pretty much ended one hour before the credits started rolling on the screen. That was the first and only time I have ever fallen asleep in a movie theatre.

Trouble stop being a dick.
You berated another member for spoiling important scenes in the Departed, then left the spoiler in your own quote... making you a dick, unintentionally perhaps, but still a dick.
Don't start throwing abuse at Illy for not having the precognitive sense to magically skip reading your post.
The rules for spoilers apply outside the book forums aswell as inside them.
No need to make more out of it, back on topic.
