...I keep sending snippets to friends with twitard daughters, to assist with their re-education. Kids thrive on their parents thinking their pursuits aren't apprpriate, but we have found nothing upsets a Twitard more than if they find out EVERYONE is not only laughing at them, but their passion is derided as (gasp shock horror) uncool.

But that only matters if they think that cool people are laughing at them. If they think uncool people are laughing at them, then that's a different story... They want the people they think are uncool (like adults with good taste) not to get it...

True, but from what I understand - which admittedly is minimal when it comes to those darn teenagers - apparently there are 2 groups at schools, the twitards and the twihaters. Mostly the twitards are girls, and the others are of course mostly boys, with formerly cool kids spread across each group. Now, boys and girls of that age have always laughed at each other and always shall, but these days the pressure to appeal to the other gender even at that early age means they have to appear cool to each other. And fandom these days is still by and large not cool. Not at that age. So you get a few emo boys jumping the fence (so to speak) to try to appeal to the girls, while lots of the girls play down their fandom so as not to seem like total losers to the boys.

This is from 4 families I know with tween(ish) girls so it's only a small sample unfortunately.

I do think twitards as a major social phenomenon have a short shelf life though. I just don't think the masses of girls will carry it to later stages of life as true scary fandom. Some may, and they will duly take their place down the lower levels of geek hierarchy along with cosplayers, furries and Tairy fans.

Hmm,

As someone that has been in university while Twilight as been around I can testify that it is not just confined to teenage girls.
There are fair number of women in their early to probably mid twenties who have a love for Edward of Jacob as much as the teenage ones. Very sad I know. However it seems that there is probably a slightly higher proportion of girls who are anti-twitards in the 20's as well. These are the girls whose fathers taught a little something called Logic. It's something men are Men are born with while women are not. Through their life many women struggle to comprehend this thing called 'logic'. Some succeed, many fail. Twilight is the greatest evidence we have for this as well.

Just another side note. One time I posted one the pictures in this thread that said Edward was a Pedophile or something like that on Facebook.
Now my sister has read the books and likes them as well as a number of other friends of mine.
I showed her the Picture and she laughed. I was somewhat proud at that. She is not real twitard, just a casual fan.
Because only a minute of two later another friend of mine (also girl, same age as my sister, 21) sent me a message saying;
"Edward is NOT a pedophile" Though it might have been all capitals. She was clearly upset/mad at the accusation. I just laughed and said;
"Isn't Edward like 120 and Bella about 16?" She had nothing on that. I laughed.

The interesting part here is that my sister is not a university student and is not really the sort who every would be.
My other friend who instead of laughing at it like my sister, got mad/offended and had to defend Twilight, she is a university student with very high grades as well.
Funnily enough the amount of experience the two girls have with relationships is inverse to their education. My sister has been in a few relationships, only one serious while the other girl in few at all.

Conclusions to be drawn. Even very academically smart females can like this dribble called Twilight. It would seem more likely, though not always the case that a girl has had more relationship experience wouldn't take Twilight as seriously.

i have until now been avoiding this thread like the plague, for the obvious reason that everything twilight related is suspect. then i come in here and see that it seems to be a scientific discussion about the irrational popularity it enjoys and how to counteract its effects. to which i can only say :D i shouldn`t have expected anything less

Cullenism? Oh God, it's like Scientology all over again.

What I do like, though, is how the opening page stresses numerous times 'we are not a religion' yet makes even more numerous ties to Christianity, and the display picture reads 'Cullenism: the new religion.'

All I can say is: :D

@Sinisdar, did you seriously expect anyone here (besides bwgan's daughter, but she's hardly a member - wait, where is bwgan these days?) would dedicate a thread to liking Twilight, or even like it in general? No, this is purely all about the hate. Our very own Goodkind thread for Twilight. It started with my girlfriend placing a sex embargo on me until I read them. I didn't. It has found a new purpose though, a better purpose I think.

I know. It's hard to believe people could be so obdurate.

@ST

This being a Malazan forum, most of our hatred here isn't blind. It's simple outrage at this travesty of a series becoming so popular. You must feel it too :D

ok...I just read some of the comments on the Cullenism page...what has this world come too..
one of them actually says
"somehow i think it's sad that it's not a real church or cult
anyway - i'm proud to call me a twilighter and cullenism is my religion!"

I vomitted a bit in my mouth when I read this..
as a side note I'm proud to say I've driven off three of my girl friends from twilight!! there is some hope left..
When a man lies he murders
Some part of the world
These are the pale deaths which
Men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear
To witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation
Take me home

New Moon is so bad that I'm in the cinema now watching it and I've decided to post on here to eliviate my boredom.

Avoid it, it's so emo.

Lol!

I saw it today. It is awful. The first one was awful but enough of the emo was drowned out in the details and setting the (weak) story up. Now the story is set up, New Moon just goes emo-tastic. It was painful.

The first awful thing to happen was that 10minutes in, an annoying couple behind me were chatting really loud. I turned around to give them my trademark death stare but too my horror, they just stared back so I had to go the whole hog and tell them to shut it. Then I spent the next 20minutes panicking that they thought I was a real twihard and one of the especially terrible ones that are grownup women. Once I got over that (and they started talking again) the emo was in full flow.

I rather mistakenly thought this movie would have plenty of werewolf on vampire fight action. Obviously while 90% of Hollywood movies are made particularly with teenage boys in mind, this one is aimed at the girls so instead of fight action it was all heavy breathing, intense staring and sexual repression. And when someone does finally have a scrap, it is all in moody slow motion. I can't believe I didn't remember that from the first film. The soundtrack is certainly music to commit suicide to.

Anyway, Bella is such an unlikeable character. As if teenagers need more belief that they are the centre of the universe and it doesn't matter how they treat people because deep down they are the most special and complicated person in the world. Plus, these films are the most disgraceful example to young girls on what to expect from a relationship. I know this is no surprise since it is written by a moron ... sorry, mormon but she never challenges gender sterotypes and this film could even be charged with glamourising domestic violence! Don't stare at the alpha werewolf's fiance since she is horribly scarred due to standing too close when he got angry! But it's ok since she can stay at home and make muffins for his werewolf chums. And Bella keeps falling in love with chaps who love her so much that they are at risk of losing control and hurting her. Not to mention all the sexual repression and thinly veiled references to virginity.

Give it 10 years and depression in young women will go through the roof when they actually discover that relationships aren't all about being so deeply in love that you just pant at each other and be complicated (not to mention all the boys don't look like werewolf boy under their t-shirts). Plus, most boys won't hang back when you ask them to "turn" you! In fact it will probably be their idea!!

I fucking loved it! Can't wait for number 3 Posted Image

It seems the author is unaware of the twimom phenomenon. Older women who are as nuts about Twilight as teenagers.

Also, props to Sombra for the review.

Wasn't Pattison the guy who said before the first movie that he thoroughly disliked the books and had gone to the audition trying to make Edward a believable 100 year old virgin? When I saw Twilight with my little sister, having that in the back of my head actually made his character quite entertaining.

The premiere of Twilight 2 was a few miles from my hometown like I said previously - the local radio DJ was there interviewing the people that were excited to watch the movie, meet the stars, etc. here was one of the questions asked to one of the more gay men that attended.

"On a scale of one to ten - with Elton John being a one , and Robert Pattison being a ten - how gay is Robert Pattison...."

The response was - "I dunno, maybe a seven....?"

I never laughed so hard in my life.
