I am definitely not advocating for Twilight in schools, but I can see the reasoning from a teacher's point of view. For some people I know, the first book they fully read for "pleasure" was Twilight (pathetic, I know), and now they read a bucketload (not the greatest stuff ever, but at least they're reading). My English teacher last year agreed with me that it's a horrible piece of trash, yet actually gave it some merit in that it could possibly act as a stepping-stone to get people into reading real literature.

It did. Now Twilight is coming along. I agree with your point, it might be trash, but it definitely opens up a lot of people who wouldn't usually read to books that are genuinely good. In the long run we can only hope that after they end up getting some books under their belt they'd realize how awful Twilight is.

Edit: Yeah I got something out of it. She was so happy with the film (Apart from Bella) that she was in a great mood. Can't complain with that.

Sorry to go back to the slightly OT discussion, but I think that most hate for anime and manga comes from hate of the retarded fans of anime and manga.

That being said, there is some great manga out there, and reading it has done a lot to help me learn Japanese. But you won't catch me dressing up as my favorite characters...

There is plenty of manga that is utter trash though.

You're right, just like Twilight I do not understand how anime/manga has managed to create such a fanbase.
And I have done research on the cultural phenomenon, more so then on the medium itself. And I still don't understand any of it.

Yeah I agree Mappo. Harry Potter was great, I've seen it help so many kids get into reading, it's kinda cool to watch it happen.

Neither can I DW. No offense to any Manga/Anime fans out there, but all the kids at my high school who are into that type of stuff (Drawing it, reading it, dressing up like it etc etc) seem to be really weird. I mean, just strange people.

One girl whose into them got up for our annual school talent show as some kind of Japanese character and proceeded to sing Crazy Train by Ozzy Ozbourne in a TERRIBLE voice. I know I'm going off stereotypes, but I've just found a lot of the fanbase for Manga and Anime and whatnot are kind of strange.

Yeah, me too. My intro to reading was "Treasure Island" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". Only read Harry Potter a few years ago when the 6th book came out.

There are a lot of similarities between anime/manga and Twilight - mainly there's a lot of creepy stalking, rape and the whole "clumsy girl acquires entourage of gorgeous supernatural people/beings, several of whom fall in love with her" trend. And there is a completely rabid fanbase. DW I think was pointing out the irony that anime/manga fans hate on Twilight when they have so many similar elements.

I can see the connection, but manga doesn't try to pass itself off as being a real book. I'd rather hate on something posing as literature and the puke-worthy otaku.
