@ sixty: true enough mangaka fiction has a vast range but focuses on teens so its rife with "fanservice". thus the oddly constructed heroine amidst super powers is a pretty common plot. anime of intellectual quality is infinately darker i.e. death note.

Ubel Blatt for example blends the mature and immature worlds perfectly. the "good guys are evil" and the real evil is basicly a really good guy out for savage revenge. such characters inform a lot of open minded writers today so its merely a matter of selectivity

(sorry to veer off the twilight issue)

@Coco phantom rep awaits u. you're the man :p

Major argument today with my sad, sick, strange little brother. He is a Twilight reader, and he says that by virtue of Twilight's popularity that makes it better than say...oh, I dunno...the MboTF! he also says that themes such as a messy, imperfect world, love lost (a la Crokus and Apsalar) exist in Twilight. Also that the characters are deep enough (apparently) for him to feel remorse when one dies. Also! That Steven Erikson, in all his majesty, writes books for "not normal people."

I am prepared to receive your letter bombs.

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

Tell him Celine Dion has more fans than Twilight, and therefore she is better than it. Watch the flesh shrivel off his face at his blasphemy. Alternatively, smack him for thinking arguing from popularity is anything but retarded.

Actually, just smack him.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

That'd make me feel better...but eventually I'll be jumped by a Twilight Hand of the Sparkle (wink) disguised as emos.

Got something...concrete?

An imperfect world?

Where all the good guys live happily ever after and...Oh wait...

As for popularity, there are many examples of popular not being good. You could point to many historical dictators if you wish to prove this point.

And if normal means stupid, he's probably right :(

Well, if Erikson writes books for "not normal people" then he should feel right at home! Because he is, in fact, a retarded girl with no sense of taste or grammar.

IT'S ABNORMAL YOU MORONIC TWIT.

Besides, I don't think we really want this idiot reading Erikson anyway, because then in all probability he will come onto the boards and troll with his sparkly retardedness. Although I'm sure the mods would get their jollies from banning him. I don't think we've had many trolls for them to ban recently. Perhaps their trigger fingers are itchy...

If none of the above works then you could always burn his Twilight books (and the TG he undoubtedly has under his pillow), sit on his head and read MBotF to him until his brainz melt because his puny mind can't comprehend what good literature really is.

+rep to Tapper.

Thankyou for all your suggestions, made me laugh. :(

I have decided to put chopped onions in his pillowcase.

By the by, Mappo, Idiot Jr. (little brother) expressed a desire to read the MBoTF, not a month ago. If he thinks he can have it both ways, the little sod's goin down.

This calls for the Malazan Justice League!

Can I come? :(

The question I would be asking myself at this stage AIJ is why the hell is a your little BROTHER (Point being he's male) expressing a desire to read stupid ass books like Twilight?

Try jacking his Twilight books, hiding them and inundating him with good fantasy. If he's an avid reader he'll eventually be forced to read the good stuff, thus rehabilitating him from the book-drug that is Twilight.

I have a copy of the Ritualis Romani which contains the Exorcism rituals.
If you can find yourself a catholic priest and get him to read this to your brother while spraying him with holy water it may do the trick.

If you want it PM, because for some utterly demented reason the forum won't let me upload it for you here.

12? Fuck, he isn't even a teen. He doesn't need to explain himself. He sounds prepubescent, which WOULD make him effeminate.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

This child has no hope. Lost cause, AIJ, give up.

Recent development in my dilemma:
My girlfriend's roommate sympathises with my plight, being a Twilight loather as well (she has a whole 'nother box of crazy in the form of the Hills and Gossip Girl though :D). I have recruited her into my cause, and she will do her utmost to drive my gf into a frenzy of adolescent lust and horniness, at which point she will have no choice but to satiate her urges by having glorious sexytimez with me, seeing as she "doesnt" fap and all...after which I will claim glorious victory over the female sex in an abstinence contest, proving once and for all man's superiority over women :(

How her roommate will do all this, I have no idea, however I really hope it works. I'm assuming repeated viewings of Wolverine and that scene in Australia will be the order of the day. Australian girls luuuuuurrrrve Hugh Jackman after all...

1. She does (fap).
2. Roommate's plan could backfire spectacularly in an explosion of lesbian love. I approve. Ask to join in and/or film it.
