Watched AVP 2 yesterday. It was entertaining, if not all that good, and the ending was so incredibly dumb I wanted to cringe. They tried to be mysterious, and it just got really dumb.

Anyways, what is it with movies such as that and the aliens being incredibly uber at the beginig, but at the end they're about as dangerous as sheep?

Because they can't scale the threat the monsters are meant to present to the idiot human cast as they get more and more proficient at not dying horribly very well?
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

This most likely occurs because the director and producers blow most of the budget on making the Aliens look "wicked awesome" and then run out of money. Hasty tie ups to the plot take place...and in the end...you get an ending like "Signs" had.

Caught 3:10 to Yuma on DVD yesterday... mighty impressive. Best western since Unforgiven? Perhaps.

Saw Cloverfield over the weekend. Very impressed. Although, from the reactions of some members of the audience I saw it with, I suspect that it's a film that's going to divide opinions...
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I was visiting my dad earlier today, and saw in one of his paper's columns a writer talking about Cloverfield. I stopped reading when I saw the words, '9/11 porn'.

I'd argue that there are a lot of people trying to read far too much into this movie. Especially as it's actually only a big dumb monster movie that happens to be shot from a really interesting perspective. The 9/11 inferences seem come from the way the film looks - and I suspect that's occurred because, due to the coverage of 9/11, the world at large knows what destruction on a very large scale really looks like.

I just watched The Golden Compass. I don't know what to make of this film, is it a childrens book like Narnia, that is made after?

Generally I just didn't care about the story allthough I really did like the girl, good acting.

It had me doing anything else than watching the screen for 45 minutes. Then flying pirate gypsies appeared and I was intrigued. Then Sam Elliot appeared and I was actually paying attention and then came the best... The drunk warrior icebear working in a smithy!

The rest of the movie was unimportant, I just watched all the scenes with the Icebear. I swear, that idea should have had it's own movie spinnoff.

"Is that all? Is that ALL!!"
*friendly icebear punches off evil kingbears face and breaks its neck.*
"Yeah, that's all! THAT IS ALL!!"

I nearly pee'd in my bed with glee...

My thoughts on Rescue Dawn:

Holeee shit. Christian Bale is rapidly putting together a string of quality akin to Stevie Wonder in the '70s. I wouldn't be surprised if his career arc ends up resembling Jack Nicholson - only better.

Bale has been one of the most underrated actors of this time period. He has consistenty been part of very good films, starting when he was a child actor. From Empire of the Sun or Newsies to American Pyscho(the book was better though), the Machinist, Equilibrium(a very underrated action movie), the Prestige, and Batmin Begins. I see Bale as a Brad Pitt type actor where he can act in any genre from drama to action.

I haven't seen 3:10 to Yuma or Rescue Dawn yet, but they are in my Netflix list.

you said it apt

when yorik punches the bear king guy's lower jaw off I almost shit myself. The movie just kind of approached cool at a few points before that, but never quite got there. As soon as the aforementioned happened, my entire opinion of the movie changed.

and agree that the bear stuff should be its own story

Is this a book series or something?

*choke splutter cough*

Yes! It is based on the first book of the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Northern Lights (the Golden Compass in the US), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. They are childrens books but they are a class above Harry Potter and combine particle physics and religion in a very entertaining story. Fighting polar bears are the highlight but the trilogy involves parallel universes, gay angels, midgets in poisoned spurs riding dragonflies, zeppelin chases and harpies. Can't get more fantastical than that!!

His posts points to the fact they would be, especially if you enjoy Harry Potter.

Starting with Reign of Fire, he's put together a murderer's row of movies. The only ones I haven't seen (Harsh Times, The New World and The Machinist), I'm adding to my Netflix queue right now.

I think there's a difference between Bale and Pitt in that Pitt seems to retain his identity to a much greater degree than Bale does. I realize the Ocean's movies were kind of aimed at making a "Wouldn't it be cool to hang with a slightly stylized George Clooney and Brad Pitt", but other than (weirdly) Spy Games, his movies have pretty much been "Brad Pitt playing somebody". Bale WAS Patrick Bateman.

Bale's interviews on the commentary track for The Prestige seemed to reveal a very smart man (as Pitt is too), so I've high hopes for him in the future.

"A River Runs Through It" is the only Brad Pitt movie I had any respect for him. Mr & Mrs Smith is his usual level of acting -- excrutiatingly bad.
