So it's nearly October and one of our yearly traditions is to watch a "scary" film around Halloween. Wondering what to watch this year?

Basically neither of us particularly like horror but we do it for a bit of fun so it's never anything too disturbing (e.g. Saw) or Satanic...

So far we've watched the following: The Purge; Get Out; Woman in Black; The Crazies... That kind of thing. As you can see nothing massively terrifying or brutal but enough to get the heart racing.

All suggestions welcome.

Probably my favorite "horror" movie of all time is The Changeling from 1980 with George C. Scott and Trish Van Devere. Its more psychological horror as there is no blood and guts in it to speak of. Kind of a haunted mansion type. Most people have never heard of it. I first saw it when I was about 16 and I happened to be home alone that night. It had me going so much that about halfway through, during a commercial break, I went to my friend's house to get him to come back and watch the rest with me because I wanted to finish it but couldn't do it alone. My family still wasn't home when it was over and my friend went home. I locked every door in the house when I went to bed (hey, it was the mid '80s and we didn't do so then, what can I say) and the next morning, my family asked me what what the hell had happened to cause me to do that. There are a couple of serious chill inducing scenes that are among the best I've ever experienced. I have it on DVD now and tried to get my kids to watch it when they were younger but its not exactly brimming with fast paced action so they didn't sit through the whole thing. I still love to throw it on every few Octobers.

I mean if we're going by that version of frightening then basically any film Apt has said is amazing should do the trick...

Edit: Paran I've not heard of that film I'll see if it's on Netflix in the UK!

Yeah, a quick look shows Netflix US doesn't seem to have it and Amazon Prime has it on disc or pay to buy/stream I guess. I'm not surprised; I never see it on anywhere, which is why I bought the DVD. Did run across a few references to "one of the best supernatural thrillers" and "most chilling" as well as highly rated reviews, which I certainly agree with. In fact, I believe I'll be watching it myself soon. As you said, its nearly October!

I can vouch for this film as well. This film scared the CRAP out of me and my sister when we were younger. I think when we watched it I was like 8 (portably shouldn't have watched it any that age). It's easily the one I suggest to people looking for scary.

Donnie Darko, and it's Halloween-themed, too. I recommend the director's cut. (Purists say the director's cut explains too much, but having seen only that version, I can't see how the theatrical cut would be anything other than completely mystifying.)

To be fair, the Russo brothers were comedy directors before they were given Winter Soldier and Taika Watiti obviously got Thor: Ragnarok. It's not a disqualifying feature.

To be also fair The Russo Brother's only directed comedy films (2 of them) before getting CAP 2, and the rest of their films...meanwhile Todd Philips also writes the moves he directs, JOKER included.

That's a significant difference.

And Tiste makes a great point that Taika made THOR 3 operate as a comedy (which is why it works to be honest), and it's hilarious as a result.

I don't think angling a Joker origin movie as a comedy is at all smart, nor do I feel that Phillips has the chops to pull of drama...

but I mean aside from all else, I LOATHE the idea of a Joker origin movie. If there is one character who will actively be HURT by having an origin....it's the Joker.

Yes, I believe that is the case. And that's a dark story to boot.

I'm glad we never got more of that, and TKJ is pretty vague.



Also, Phoenix's Joker character in the film is named Arthur Fleck.
