A Quiet Place -- Pretty, pretty, pretty good. I kinda feel like critics (at least what I've seen) are overselling how scary it is, or maybe my near empty theater just didn't provide that communal experience these movies thrive on, but I didn't find it super scary. That said, it has its moments for sure and it's all in all a quite good genre exercise. I'd say it's on part with 10 Cloverfield Lane. Performances are good (from the kids too), the concept is good, and it clocks in at only 90 minutes so it never wears out its welcome. If you can find a theater & time when you're fairly sure it'll be packed, I'd say go then.

Molly Ringwald destroys my younger years, makes good point.

Ringwald’s article is so thoughtful. It’s honest — sometimes brutally honest — but not without understanding or self-reflection. In some ways Hughes was underrated, because he really did change something about cinema, but the warts are undeniable too. It’s kinda because he was so important that it’s worth thinking about like this in the first place though, whereas I wouldn’t say the same of Porky’s or whatever.

You can still enjoy something and disagree with it (or some of it) at the same time. I'm a raging feminist with a soft spot for hair metal and 80s action movies. My approach is "fuck it" so long I can acknowledge what's not right about it.

My ego is telling me it's important to add that I do like other things too..... B)

We just re watched 10 Things I Hate About You. On the whole, very enjoyable, but there are several sections that are terrible.

The "flash the soccer coach to get Verona out of detention" scene didn't need to happen at all. It's icky and just a bad beat.

I wished the father say less awful things about pregnancy and teen intimacy. Maybe connect the fear of losing the closeness to the departure of the mother and make it more about him being afraid than him controlling the daughters.

Bogey Lowenstein has an absurdly good house and that high school is gorgeous. It's a real high school in Washington.

There's a ton of good actors in 10 Things, but we were wondering why Alex Mack/Larisa Oleynik never got steady work like the rest of them. She could hold her own as a character at 18 and it's been twenty years since. She's probably only gotten better.

I've always wondered that about Larisa Oleynik as well! She did end up on 3rd Rock as a secondary character for a while, and was on Mad Men a few times too, but she was (is?) good enough to be lead in things, obviously even movies.

Edit to say: And obviously really good character actors are good enough to play leads in general and they get locked out of that for whatever reasons, but while Oleynik's imdb page isn't empty by any means, it's not particularly full like even a good character actor's page should be.

I liked A Knights Tale.

That's such a great movie that holds up hard! Love re-watching it. My wife still refers to Paul Bettany as "The Knights Tale" guy.

Watched READY PLAYER ONE on Friday, and quite enjoyed it. I think you get more from it having read (and enjoyed) the source material. Also the veneer in the story of all the pop culture nostalgia wallpaper works better if you grew up in the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s to give you little boosts throughout the story and shit to look for. Like at one point the bad guy has a spell he’s saving and it’s found in a box…which if you are up on your pop culture is the same box in which Gizmo is given to Billy in GREMLINS.

The story is as simple and straightforward as you remember it being. Nothing special, but I felt like this allowed Spielberg to really just settle into how he used to make movies in his youth and that shines through.

It’s got flaws (Parzival and Artemis’ love story occurs too quickly; like he tells her he loves her and I almost guffawed at how fast it seems to occur….but then that’s a screen translation thing where the time that has passed is weeks-to-months..but on screen it’s about a half hour), but overall it does a really fair job of the book. I think my only disappointment was that because of BR2049 being filmed at the same time, they were not able to secure the rights to the whole BLADE RUNNER section of the book, so instead it’s THE SHINING….which was fine, REALLY well re-createrd and done…but I kept thinking about how amazing it would have been had it been the original BLADE RUNNER bit.

I have mostly minor nitpicks. Is it a summer tentpole, knock-it-out-of-thepark blockbuster? Nah. It’s just really fun early spring night at the movies with Spielberg aiming (and only partially succeeding) to capture the HOOK, E.T., JP days of his career.

The actors all do a fine job, except (surprisingly; considering his stellar turn in ROGUE ONE) Ben Mendelson who kind of phones in his villain. Oh, and the denouement with him is…not translated well.

Did you like the book? Then you’ll very much probably like this.
Haven’t read the book? You might still find stuff to like, but understand it’s a VERY simplistic story.
Haven’t read the book AND don’t’ come from one of the Era’s it’s obsessed with? I wouldn’t bother. Millennial critics seem to not think much of it.

I watched Ready Player One last sunday(haven't read the book). It's most definitely not a deeply thoughtful kinda movie but having gone to watch it without pretty much any expectations, I enjoyed it immensely. Even though I grew up in 2000s and have never been particularly observant of pop culture in general there were still enough bits for me to catch and make me interested. The visuals are just great and very immersive in cinema. Also I was pretty stoned watching it and this movie just fits that state of mind perfectly, I could just focus on and enjoy the action and visuals without noticing too much the other aspects of the movie that weren't as good, most likely I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much otherwise(and probably wouldn't even have gone to see it).

I'm a sucker for those kinds of movies...so I'll watch.

It's been in development hell for like 20 years though...so tempered optimism really.

Yah I'll watch that. I just watched 47 Meters Down. It wasn't very good, but the ocean is scary and sharks are scary, so it still kinda worked anyway. This dumb movie has the same advantage.

Just watched THOR:RAGNAROK. Twice.
Then I saw BLACK PANTHER in thermonuclear 3D omni ultra extreme imax.

Now, whisky.
The only way this day could get any better would require Dora Milaje costumes and maybe a rhinoceros.

And SPIDER-MAN HOMECOMING now done. Solid movie, not as epic as the other two, but entertaining enough.

I don't think you are abyss.

Better sit down and marathon all MCU material chronologically as a proper prep

Just watched the new Murder on the Orient Express. I was only half paying attention to the actual plot - And yet I still REALLY liked this film.

It's a film that in my eye is more style than substance. More presentation than real mystery. Since the premise is so old fashioned and seems to be out weighed by the sheer force of the cast. Also the actual reveal of who the murder is was utterly preposterous.

Which I might have been offended by if I had read the book or was a fan of Agatha Christie. But I haven't and am not and as such I was just amused by Kenneth Branagh fantastic portrayal of Poirot (THAT BEARD!) and completely enthralled with the sets and costumes and over all quality of the production. It's a small film that looks like a billion dollars.

Most amazing I think is the fact that it sets up a sequel and, from what I just read, the possibility of creating an Agatha Christie cinematic universe ™ which just sounds like the kind of stupid greedy cash grab you'd expect from Hollywood - BUT I am so on board for that. If they make more of these films I am seeing them at the cinema.
