Just watched Risen, with Joseph Fiennes as the Roman tribune assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Resurrection. It was on my hard drive and I was halfway through when I realised what an unintentionally apt seasonal choice I had made. Ah well.

Not a bad film actually (and this is from a non-believer), although it flips from CSI: Jerusalem to being a bit Family Channel a bit early IMHO when it would have been best served keeping it ambiguous a while longer.

Much better than the usual Biblical fare though. I rather liked the closer attention to historical detail. Although Draco Malfoy referring to "Poseidon" after an earthquake instead of Neptune stuck out - which to me emphasised how good they had actually been if that was the only thing that seemed discordant from that perspective. Also liked the slightly more gritty tone. Joseph Fiennes is quite good.

Two days in a tomb out of three.

So no. It doesn't. Max Landis can be a disgusting abuser asshole, and I can watch a movie that is the creative result of many people...one of which is a shitstain.

I'll tell you what Amph...chances are HIGH that people in high studio roles on probably all the movies you love...are likely abusive in some respect. That's not hyperbole, it's a damned numbers game.

So the best thing to do is not shun the work of a tonne of other people...but expose these dickheads (which seems to be occurring) among the hardworking.

I'm going to support the other people who worked on this movie who aren't assholes, and probably didn't by and large know Landis' history.

And considering it's Netflix, I'm not even giving money to it that they didn't already possess.

Works for me.

And hopefully less studios will pay for Landis work in future, due to him being exposed. I think we can at least agree he should be held accountable for his actions, and perhaps that will be a Hollywood blackballing.

I haven't seen everything I wanted to this year, but Get Out is maybe my #1 of what I did see, and it's not really even close. Perfect script, universally great performances, balances the horror and the comedy masterfully, and every single payoff is on point and feels earned. I don't think Jordan Peele is quite as unique a director as Edgar Wright yet (who I bring up because Shaun of the Dead is maybe the perfect horror-comedy), but he does have the benefit of a lot of really effective & funny tricks from the years of Key & Peele sketches. It does have a layer of horror satire in it, in the way it handles the tropes, but it's largely just a matter of extremely smart/surprising decisions rather than parody.

tl;dr: It's great, and it's a horror/comedy/satire that does all of those elements proud.

Finished BRIGHT.

Huh. The first half of the movie showed promise, but the second half squanders it in really pedestrian fashion. The script basically follows most of the plot points to really obvious and predictable ends. There were no surprises, and nothing exceptionally great about that second half. Even the Elf secret police, and the sect of Inferni are...meh by the time they are more revealed. Smith, Edgerton, and Rapace do a decent job in their roles, and Ayer's skills at directing this type of narrative are as fine as they ever are...but the story was weak as it began to open up. The Fogteeth Orcs were telegraphed from Moment #1 to be "the ones that would find Jakoby blooded by the end", so I feel like if they hadn't been so present and so about "Orc blood", that it might have avoided that.

Anyways, not the worst movie I've seen, but never delivers on the promise of the first half.

I agree, they half-assed this movie. Too much copying from Bad Boys and Training Day and not enough world building to get us engaged in the story.

Saw Pitch Perfect 3. Utterly loved it, just as I expected to. Such a consistently hilarious series of films.

Watched Bright today.

That turned out surprisingly good for a Netflix Urban Fantasy movie with Will Smith in it. It's not a great film but it's pretty solid. Better than it has any right to be. The first half is better than the second part - It feels like I've watched too many films doing the "on the run" plot and Bright doesn't do it well - and the ending felt pretty random.

As an Urban Fantasy story made into a film it is a great success though I think. The writing is great. It reminds me of a magic version of Alien Nation and you can tell who ever did the manuscript knows his modern fantasy writing. If this was a book series I would be in for the long haul. I hope they make more of these.

The concept of a modern world existing 2000 years after the dark lord fell is smart. The concept of a magic wand in our society being a deus ex machina object is fascinating. The magic in the film is underplayed but all the characters reactions to brights and the wand works to build up the idea of power.

Also, good for Will Smith. I feel like it's been a decade since I saw him in a good film that I liked. His relationship with the Orc cop has a lot of potential. They're part Lethal Weapons, part Bad Boys and it works much better than you'd expect. Who ever the actor is under all that make-up he did a rock solid job.

Look, just because you're incapable of divesting yourself from what ever pop culture meme that decides what kinds of films you're allowed to like, doesn't mean that every single film I enjoy is a controversial mind shattering opinion.

I also like The Good the Bad and the Ugly, The Godfather, Full Metal Jacket, Pretty Woman and Stand by Me - Or are you going to reject these films now as well?

Go watch Bright. You'll probably enjoy it - It's not a big budget production but it has heart.
