Hmm. To me, McAvoy's performance -- while I'm sure it was exactly what was asked for -- looks abysmal. It's every grating, offensive "split personalities" cliche rolled into one. Except in this case, it looks like most of the personalities drool for some reason. Maybe it's a thrilling B-movie built around that tasteless premise; everyone's hoping for M. Night to be "good again", certainly.

Either way, you should still guess what the twist is!

M. Night was never GOOD to begin with. None of his "good" films hold up to re-watches. THE SIXTH SENSE, SIGNS...once you know the twist, they are boring and you realize they are all shot with ridiculous amounts of stationary medium wide shots. It's....irritating.

Saw La La Land, and pretty much loved it. It's a good movie that maintains its momentum throughout the entire movie, apart from a little bit in the middle.

I enjoy Unbreakable quite a bit

I think UNBREAKABLE works despite M. Night's penchants (though it's still FULL of those medium wide shots! Arg!)...simply because it's an interesting comic book story underneath. I would not say it's a Good movie though...but it's his most innocuous.

Have you ever counted up your pet peeves just to see how many you have? I wonder who on the board would win.

I have a lot. Most of mine have to do with driving. Topping the list is people who drive across parking lots.

Movies I've seen recently:

Neighbors -- funnier than I expected, pleasant surprise. And not as much of a cringe comedy as I expected, mostly just affable doofuses trying to one-up each other. Kinda like a movie-budget Workaholics.

Spy -- as funny as I expected, which is like B+ level. I was worried it would be overlong (it's 112 minutes) but it was paced well and engaging throughout. I dunno if Statham has comic range, but he definitely nailed the self-parody stuff here.

^^^^ Both of these had very good comic turns from Rose Byrne. She really kills it in both. Neighbors 2 kinda came and went w/o much fanfare though, so I'm curious what happened there.

The Secret Life of Pets -- this is basically a Toy Story clone. It was decent but not as good as I expected from the trailer (the movie is much more plot-heavy). Also it features a bizarre, awful parody of militant civil rights movements as a major subplot. Not joking. Zootopia had some fundamental problems in trying to tackle social issues, but it meant well. This one doesn't even mean well.

Watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens again recently. Damn that is fine entertainment. Nothing groundbreaking mind you, but it gives one that satisfactory groove the first three were so good at. It's nice to recapture that feeling from a Star Wars film. Also, it leaves one really wanting to see the next movie.

You might be right. I'll start mapping them and in 30 years I'll reveal all the divergences and overlaps for everyone on the board.

Let's all try to guess the twist to the new awful-looking Shyamalan movie.

Spoiler

My best guess is that the end scene is a slow camera pull away of a comatose Samuel L. Jackson with doctors standing over his hospital bed discussing how after being in this state for 30 years that they are perplexed at how his brain just started to show "activity" today. The shot then drifts to a little girl playing with a cat down the the hall and the little girl is asking a nurse about it. The nurse says the cat was brought in today because it makes the patients feel better. The girl picks up the cat and looks into its eyes and then the little girl's eyes grow big with terror.... end of movie.

I went wild and stayed up until 11pm the other night and watched this. It was funnier than I expected too. The airbag bits had me really laughing as I wasn't expecting the slapstick.

Hey, some of us have kids! I don't, obviously, but Mezla certainly does. And now that I think of it, so do you, so I guess it's not a great excuse. But the important thing is that I'm right: some of us do have kids. Check and mate.

I don't like to pay for comedy movies. And I find anything Judd Apatow, Seth Rogan-ish unfunny usually. Hence the surprise at NeighboUrs. A lot of it still fell flat with me but there was enough funny to be worth watching.

NEIGHBOURS only really worked for us because we were new parents...so every single "parenting" joke they threw in there (up to and including the breast-pump sequence) made us howl uproariously.

This is also by BAD MOMS is hilarious to us.

Sing Street: another naturalistic musical from the guy who made Once, and while maybe a slightly more conventional story, still absolutely wonderful. It's earnest, joyous, sad, romantic in all the right ways, and while there might not be a song as good as "Falling Slowly", the originals in this are still incredible. It's set in the 80s and the originals are often "in the style of" some of the greats of the era, w/o sounding like Weird Al style parodies. Would have easily made my Best of 2016 list.

New POWER RANGERS trailer. Now THIS looks cool!. Did not care for the first trailer, but this I like.

Yah the first trailer made it kinda look like a retread of a lot of these samey blue-grey YA scifi flicks (Project Almanac, Earth to Echo, etc.). Chronicle is the only one that's stood out so far. This still kinda resembles them in the early parts (the cave, the high school scenes) but it looks like it breaks that mold eventually. And it also has a cheeky sense of humor. If it manages to be half as smart as Chronicle, and then doesn't become a grim action slog in its final act, that'd be a pleasant surprise.
