I saw a preview for that over the weekend and my response was an odd combination of WTF & LOL??!! And then I thought, "Well, maybe better this than another remake of a 70's or 80's tv show that wasn't that great the first time"...

So not only is Alex Garland making ANNIHILATION (First of the Southern Reach trilogy books by Jeff VanDerMeer) into a film....but they just cast the amazing Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson (CREED) as the leads. PERFECT.

I really can't wait to see what Garland does with the Southern Reach. Though I didn't care for the story and resolution in EX-MACHINA, the film itself looks and feels great!

So I just saw Miasto 44 (english title for this is Warsaw 44). I was reluctant for some time due to polish cinema not making me expect all that much, but this... watch it. It's a movie about very young folk during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, and it's as brutal as would be expected - visually, sure, but most of all emotionally. I'm not exactly in a mood to write anything resembling a review, but I will say this: you should definitely watch it.
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

Nah we got it on DVD I dunno about US Netflix though. It's a really intelligent sci-fi that came out last year.

It's on Canadian Netflix BK, so possibly on the US one too.

I had my issues with the film narratively, but it achieves highly in many categories (like editing, soudn design, cinematography, score. ect)

Ex-Machina is on Amazon Prime streaming I think.

I watched The Peanuts Movie. I was bracing for disappointment, and there was no need at all. It's quite good, not just "better than it should have been." The only mar really (besides putting Lucy and Linus in the same grade for some reason, WTH?!) are the original pop songs which are near-ubiquitous in animation these days, but even they aren't that bad. I mean don't get me wrong, they are bad (it's Meghan Trainer and Flo-Rida doing the main ones *shudder*), but they're ignorable rather than obnoxious, which is kind of a miracle. And there's plenty of Guaraldi to balance them out. Otherwise the movie's a real delight, with lots of charm and heart, and even several LOL moments.

First Class was definitely a breath of fresh air after the X3 and Wolverine disasters, but Days of Future Past really knocks it out of the park so hopefully you catch it soon.
