Finally saw TOY STORY 3.

That scene with the incinerator is pretty intense, for a kid's movie.

(Big spoilers for the movie obviously).

I need you to watch Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Apt.

Ugh. One of the worst films I have ever seen. Apt will probably love it.

It is one of the greatest movies of the last twenty years.

Oh man, Bad Lieutenant was amazing. Nicolas Cage was just hilarious in that movie.

Watched Elysium earlier today. I liked it. I'm surprised it bombed at the theater.

Ugh. SO preachy. It just seemed like it was a bunch of circumstances thrown together to denounce plutocracy, the 1%, support universal healthcare, etc, etc. Not that there is anything wrong with any of that, but it just didn't seem like the story was there to support such obvious underlying themes. It was like Howard Zinn wrote an episode of The Jetsons while on a generic Ritalin binge.

It looked real pretty though.

I just left a sneak preview of AMAZING SPIDER MAN 2. It was OK. Not the greatest thing I've ever seen, but certainly not the worst.

The thing is, I'm familiar with the basics iof the story, so I paid mroe attention to the acting and the cast, and I just did not dig on it at all. Kinda hammy. Kinda weak in places. And the overall motivation for the bad guys was not very...well...motivating. Just seemed like a time a killer. And at two hours and change, it did plenty of that.

When am I going to blown away by another tentpole film? X-MEN maybe? Cuz GODZILLA doesn't look like it's gonna do that, either.
Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.

Really? Please explain. Not being sarcastic or anything, I genuinely hated that film & can't get how anyone would like it.

I haven't watched the Nicolas Cage version but I did watch the original one from the 90s with Harvey Keitel. The Bad Lieutenant films are supposed to show a cop who has gone completely off the edge, trying to keep his shit together, while everything is turning to shit around him. Cage's portrail in Port of Call fits this idea perfectly, switching in and out of lucidness and generally just being insane.

This is really accurate. The Herzog direction is fully stellar and strange and they actually give Cage decent people and stories to work off from in the movie.

Plus, there's a history with New Orleans being a city teetering upon ruin post-Hurricane Katrina. Seriously bad things happened there to many people and even now, almost ten years later, the city has not been healed.

So, if you can watch it while dipping periodically between sarcastic and heartfelt appreciation of the story, the city, of people living their lives by stumbling forwards through an unfair life and of Nicholas Cage + Werner Herzog, you can really get a great experience watching the movie.

Yeah I get what it is about and everything. That was the reason I wanted to watch it, the concept of it appealed to me. Still does. I really thought I would enjoy it, I really didn't. I just thought the way it was done was awful. But then I'm not in love with Nic Cage as Apt seems to be.

It's all about the point of view I think.

When you first discover that Nicolas Cage is actually an insane person hiding behind a mask of pretend calm, then every movie with Nicolas Cage becomes an adventure. You notice his mannerisms, his inflictions, his face, etc. how it all cracks some times and then he starts shouting. Nicolas Cage is just entertaining pure and simple.

Posting this for the trailer video (it's not youtube unfortunately), not the Kickstarter aspect which you can take or leave. It's just an interesting topic that I think has lots of curiosity from both "inside" and "outside" perspectives.

You could probably had made that video into a discussion thread. It's a pretty interesting subject.

I remember hearing or watching some show about that before. I remember them talking about the "gay voice" being a kind of social calling card signifying to other gay people that you are gay and it becomes a form of . Like how you will speak normally to other people but when you see a baby or a dog or cat you switch over into that high-pitched baby talk kind of voice. In that show it was mostly implied that gay people, conciously aware gay people anyway, could switch back and forth between using that voice, depending upon what kind of group they were in.

In this video how ever it seemss like it is an actual problem that people are battling with. I wonder if this means that the voice is actually connected with "gay behaviour" on a more primal level or if it is simply a case of them having been doing the voice for so long they forgot how to speak "straight"?

I know I personally have a negative reaction when I hear somebody speaking in a stereotypically "gay" voice. How ever the reaction is not for me a case of inherent homophobia, I don't really care who you're attracted to, it's more that caveman primal recognition of weakness. It's not masculine to speak that way, in fact many flamboyently gay people sound more like women than men, and there is something in me that reacts aggressively to that. I don't act on it of course, I have a great enough understanding on my own instincts to squash any negative reaction, how ever it is there in the back of my head. Like a voice that goes "Urgh stop being such a fucking pussy and sack up". It's like my subconconcious sees that weakness and wants to stop it because weakness is a flaw that can't be accepted in the "man club". Or something.

I think that may be the same kind of reaction that leads to bullying in general. You notice a speech pattern or a behavioral fault in somebody else and like chickens, you peck away at the thing that is not like the others, that doesn't conform or look normal. Until the person learns to not look weak and becomes a part of the pack or well, they die.

Eh at this point it's just the trailer, so I don't want to pigeonhole it as anything (and certainly not as a "problem" so much as an "issue", if you catch the distinction -- it's multifaceted).

That said, maybe I should have put it in the Psychotherapy Forum. Tell me, Apt, how long have you had these feelings of aggression?

Huh, that's really interesting.

I have a total of three gay friends in my close circle of friends. One of them has the full-on stereotypical voice, his partner has it to a much lesser degree, but it's still present, and my third friend doesn't have it at all...and in fact has commented that he dislikes the full-on gay voice and feels it's an affectation that no one needs and they take it on as a part of culture instead.

Case in point: John Barrowman is gay, and on TV and in person (I met him and got his autograph) he doens't have the gay voice affectation at all.

So I'm of the mind it's something that is a factor of gay culture, and not necessarily a "must"...but the trailer there brings it into an interesting light, as it seems like some who have it don't wish to have it. Really interesting topic and I'd love to see a linguist or speech pathologist have a crack at it.

Did I say he wasn't? I said I've met him, and he doesn't have the voice style that is featured in that trailer. I wouldn't have stood in line to meet him and get his autograph if I didn't think he was awesome.

A friend of mine (who is bi) theorizes that the "gay voice" is an extension of the rather tough process of coming to terms with and expressing their sexuality. The sad reality of negative consequences to coming out as gay can and often is traumatic, so the newly out may choose to armor themselves in armor made of flamboyance and embracing the "other than normal" aspects of their personality.

So that's why I don't mind it and why I appreciate when people let down their guard around me (as in dropping the gay voice).

I was merely agreeing with you and disagreeing with the notion that just because someone is gay they must neccessarily affect a "gay" tone of voice. That's, I think, patently absurd.

In no way was I implying that you thought Barrowman wasn't awesome (which he is!)
