I just picked up Master and Commander on blu ray.I fucking love this film... it's one that I constantly return to. And not just when I'm reading Patrick o'Brian. The sound effects are awesome through surround too.

Watched In Search of the Sugar Man the other day, which gets seven biting songs out of seven biting songs, followed by Breakfast at Tiffany's (typically Blake Edwards in its scenes), which I award five unnamed cats out of six and a half, and in the weekend, Casablanca - which I'll give six point two corrupt french officials out of seven point twenty eight, mostly because I enjoyed Captain Renault so much - the actual plot, even with the 'air port discussion' didn't blow me away.

Watched Catching Fire, and it was a whole lot better than the first one. Thought the first was decent, but really happy Gary Ross didn't return as director...he just didn't work.
Also watched Short Term 12 and thought it was pretty good. The kids are fantastic, and the adults are pretty solid for the most part too. The frequent state of high intensity coulda come off melodramatic but it's actually very well-handled.

Seen lots o' movies lately:
THE NUT JOB - it's not WALKING WITH DINOSAURS. That's about all you can say on its behalf.
DALLAS BUYERS CLUB - a phenomenal movie with great performances. I remember the early AIDS epidemic in a very abstract way, not on the human level shown here.
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY - yes, the performances are phenomenal here too. But its kinda relentless and shrill and starts grating after a while. You could easily cut 20 mins off the movie, I think a firmer hand was needed in the editing bay.
JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT - I figured this would suck, pleasantly surprised it didn't. It's just OK though, nothing special.

Finally saw THE BUTLER.
Great film! Loved Whitaker's performance (but then I always do). And I felt the second half of the movie was most important. Illustrating that the ONLY President to truly care what was going on during those years was Kennedy (which I believe is why Cecil puts so much stock into keeping his tie)...and I really liked the eye-opening bit about Regan and Nancy ostensibly showing the public a house of cards facade of support, that they roundly, and coldly shut down behind closed doors (with Cecil in full attendance)...which is the last straw for Cecil.
Some really important and powerful moments in there. Really quite enjoyed the denouement with Obama, as the full circle of Cecil's life seals with the current administration.
Emotional stuff.

DESPICABLE ME (the 1st one). Finally got around to seeing this on Netflix. Man, what a great kids flick! Lots of heart and humour. I love it when studios do family features RIGHT.

I gotta be honest - I won't spoil anything for you - but I thought there was a serious drop off in storytelling from the first one to the second one. Don't get me wrong, DM2 was good and enjoyable but I really liked the 1st DESPICABLE ME a bunch, which is why I was disappointed. I think maybe because THE CROODS was so damn good, it had a lot to live up to in order to impress me. Still, I hope you like it. Its got some really fun farts, uh, I mean, parts.

I watched all three of those recently. I thought the humor was solid in both DM 1 & 2, but the villain plot was weak in both, and 2 in particular. Compared to say The Incredibles, it seemed like a waste of a premise dramatically speaking. That said, still very enjoyable despite the lack of dramatic tension though. The Croods on the other hand was a major surprise, way weirder (and funnier) than I expected, and the stakes felt real as well.

Yeah, the villain motivation was what I was getting at. There's more too, but its a cartoon, so I don't wanna over analyze it.
Glad I am not alone in my Croods love, though. THere's some quality foreshadowing and many other great storytelling devices in that movie. For Dreamworks, it was nice that it wasn't an animated caveman tale told through the worn out device of cribbing elements of modern pop culture.

I *NEED* to see Frozen. If it's a step up from Tangled (which was epic), it'll be mind-blowing.
Meanwhile, watched The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Definitely an improvement over the first one. Had some shortfalls, I felt, and a few unused plot threads. Could maybe have benefited from an extra 30 minutes? I dunno. Felt a bit squeezed, basically.

Agree that it felt a bit squeezed, especially in the first half, but the books had some of those weird issues as well. Like characters that had names and interesting attributes introduced at the Capital, but who died off screen in the arena w/ no particular further mention anyway. Nothing huge, but mini-Chekhov's Gun moments.

Not sure how I feel about 'Ender's Game'. It's been a long while since I read the book, and the movie was, regardless, average fare, but I honestly think that they might as well have not made the movie, if they were going to make it like it was. I think we saw maybe two games in Battle School? And they were mostly laser light shows without any sense of tactics. The big 'final battle' one was completely lacking in impact because we hadn't seen any other battles, or even had some narration to explain why it was such a big deal that Dragon Army had to basically suicide to win it. Or even a sense of what Ender was like as a commander. One screen of his army moving up the ranks does not substitute for anything.
And I'm pretty sure 50% of the end part was different. Maybe it reflects a more updated take on things, or maybe my memory is off, but I'm pretty sure that even the stuff which wasn't completely cut or ignored got changed. Never mind leaving out the entirety of Val and Peter's storyline.
It's like...they truncated it so much, most of it only works if you have read the books. But if you've read the books, the movie is wrong. So what exactly were they going for? O.o
