Lockout was fun as heck. Think Escape from LA combined with Taken and put in space jail.

Different. These two movies share the "space jail" and "escape it" plot points, but otherwise, they're pretty different. Fortress looks like something so bad it's enjoyable, while Lockout is good on its own merits.

Saw WWZ the other day, and liked it a bunch. Great tension, great action, great set pieces, but would have loved more character development, and felt no need for that zombie at the end that sounded like a chicken. Everyoone in the theater, including myself, was laughing at it and it took me out of the zone. Would have much preferred the ending that Quick Tidal put up there.

Netflixed an amazing movie called Shotgun Stories, directed by Jeff Nichols (Mud), and starring Michael Shannon (the new Gen. Zod). It was the best film I've seen in about two years.

From Rotten Tomatoes:

Quote

Two families linked by the same father explode into a violent rivalry in this independent Southern gothic drama, the first feature from director Jeff Nichols. Cleaman Hayes lived and died in Little Rock, AR, where he had seven sons by two different women. After wedding Nicole (Natalie Canerday), Cleaman sired three sons, and his lack of concern for their future was reflected in the fact he barely gave them names -- they were dubbed Son (Michael Shannon), Kid (Barlow Jacobs) and Boy (Douglas Ligon). One day, Cleaman abandoned his wife and sons, and left them to survive in deep poverty that has trapped them to this day. Eventually Cleaman cleaned up his act, launched a successful business, married again, and raised four more sons -- Cleaman Jr. (Michael Abbott, Jr.), Mark (Travis Smith), Stephen (Lynsee Provence) and John (David Rhodes), all of whom were given the love and attention Cleaman denied his first three children. When Cleaman dies, all seven sons attend the funeral, and Son, overcome by bitterness, spits on his father's coffin and tells everyone how much he hated the man. Short tempered Mark answers Son with his fists, and a free-for-all breaks out between the two Hayes families. The anger and rivalry doesn't end at the end of the day, and soon a war has broken out between the clans, with no small amount of blood shed on either side.

I loved this movie so much. Reminds of David Gordon Green's work: pastoral cinematography, slow-paced but doesn't feel like it, little-to-no exposition, and the actors work wonders with the little dialogue they are given. I highly recommend it.

For fun, I watched The Octagon.

And my kids made me watch the New Karate Kid. That movie stunk, but I will always marvel at Jackie Chan's ability to play a broken character. His control over his own body is astounding, but you tend to forget that works both ways, like when he plays a hunching, depressed and withdrawn character, he will pantomime that behavior in a very realistic way. He's a pretty amazing actor.
Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.

If you've not seen FORTRESS yet, I HIGHLY recco it. It's an almost perfect bad b-movie from the 90's. AND it stars Christopher Lambert. It's one of those movies you can watch and goof on with friends. :thumbsup:/>

I'm generally not a Lambert fan. I think I'll pass on this one.

Stonny, if you liked Shotgun Stories you should definitely follow it up with Take Shelter, which in my opinion is even better somehow. Again it stars Michael Shannon, who I think is a pretty singularly gifted actor and I'm not at all surprised Nichols would work with him again. I don't mean nobody is as good an actor as him, but I do mean there's something about him that can't be replaced by just switching in an equally good actor.

Went and seen World War Z over the long Independence Day weekend. It was not bad, not bad at all. Just wished it was rated R so they could have upped the violence/gore factor.

Alternative names for the movie: Zombies on a Plane or The Kosher Undead.

Worry: i have take shelter on my list, but its hard to find. I am actively looking for it though.

Michael Shannon is really good at what he does. His expressions can say more than some actors entire ouvres. I think thats what puts him over the top.

Not relevant but hes alos the villain in a recent film with joseph gordon levitt called premium rush which is average though Shannon is good.

Watched Stand Up Guys today which was a bit wooden considering the calibre of the actors. Still very good and worth a watch though I would have preffered a different ending.

Whoa. I just watched that movie. It's a bike delivery movie - which is completely ludicrous, yet enjoyable and quite tense in some spots. I rate it a solid B. JGL and Shannon make it worth watching.

For the hell of it, Netflix'd CABIN IN THE WOODS.

Really liked it. Wish I had seen it in the theaters when it came out.

Same. The Unicorn was hilarious. Film totally wasn't what I was expecting, it just got better and better. Like Doomsday. That film is ridiculous, you are just thinking "This film cannot get any cooler?" Then the next scene happens. 8)

Just rewatched Priest on lovefilm as it's on Instant. Film is too good. Paul Bettany and Karl Urban totally kick ass in it. Plus crucifix ninja throwing stars. Needs a long sequel imo.

Wait, Karl Urban is in PRIEST?

Oh man, now i wants to see it!

Also just realised he is Chronicles of Riddick aswell heh. He was wearing a full on face covering helmet at first aswell. I was like, "Wait, I know that jaw and mouth!"

Yeah, his character in CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK was awesome...and he reprises the role of Vaako in the third film as well.

A few months ago I posted a promotional poster for a very stupid movie. Now the trailer has come out.

I've never watched an Asylum film, and I will not watch this one either. I admit to being entertained by all the awful trailers though.

Wow, this sounds really good! Idris Elba as Mandela? Sign me up. I got chills watching this.

Also, his imitation of Mandela's accent is very solid.

Hoping this shows up at TIFF this year, I'd be all over it.

^^Definitely a stirring trailer. Plus there's no hint that it's actually a soccer movie, so that's affirming.

Man, Sharknado is a step up.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.
