Escape from LA - also one of the best movies of all time.

Ha, I loved those movies. My friend even made an "Escape From Cleveland" poster and put it in his movie as an oddball easter egg.

I made an Escape from Cleveland poster for my film & tv class! They really need to make it - only Snake's getting on in years now. But still, I would be willing to overlook the age-continuity issue if it meant getting to see what exactly did go down in Cleveland :)

Now that's just a weird coincidence. Did you also put in a pre-op (I forgot the name of the guy that turned into a chick)? I wanted that poster, but it got lost...wtf. I heard that they were going to remake or make a new Escape, but....don't know. I would see it though.

I heard something about that too. Not sure how they could pull it off...I can't think of an adequate cast myself. And no, no pre-op on my poster - I was 14. It mainly included Snake and a skyline of cleveland that I had made to look semi-destroyed and on fire.

**imagines Loki delivering the line "And no, no pre-op on my poster - I was 14." to a deadpan silence.** Er...so, the remake I heard something like "Where else can Snake escape from? Obviously the answer has to be "Earth"." Snake in space? uh.....how's he gonna do Bangkok rulez in zero gs?

Watched the sci-fi thriller Source Code by Duncan 'Zowie Bowie' Jones. Jake Gylenhaal wakes up on a train in someone else's body with people who know him. Eight minutes later the train blows up and he wakes up in a capsule. Good stuff, tense, engaging and looks gorgeous. Definitely sets Jones up as a majorly exciting director if he wasn't already after the excellent Moon. There's a few quibbles about how it holds together but minor stuff really. Well worth a watch.

Finally got round to watching Harry Brown. Basically Michael Caine murders chavs in a London apartment block. Brilliant and thrilling. Also, Michael Caine. ;)

Technically it's TV I guess, but I just did a 1-2 punch with the Louis Theroux docs on the Westboro Baptist Church. The Most Hated Family In America from a few years back and TMHFIA In Crisis, an update from this year. Both were excellent. He manages to maintain his outsider/opposition POV while never overriding the WBC folks' ability to get their POVs across. Many of them were surprisingly, to me at least, otherwise sane besides their cultish beliefs. Reminded me a bit of Big Love, as they're somewhere between the main family and the folks back on the compound. But all the generations involved -- as well as the aforementioned seeming sanity of many of them -- just makes it that much more disturbing and heartbreaking that they are also true believers in the church's teachings.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

The Phelps themselves are all lawyers. To a large degree, they are professional litigants.

In essence, they go around trolling people as efficiently as possible until their rights are violated (while recorded by media/cameras/witnessed), and then sue the hell out of those people.

They may believe to some degree, but it's mostly just that they are an evil bunch of people who are professional trolls.

I have been marathoning the Alien/Predator/AVP movies....I've completed the Alien movies and I am now watching Predator 2.... I'm sorry but has there ever been a greater collection of movies? Sure, AVP has a bit to answer for but the originals are just plain awesome!

And the new Predators movie? O.M.G - Who knew Adrien Brody could be so hard-arse?!

That's true, but only part of the equation, and I would attribute the genuine evil primarily to Fred Phelps himself, while the rest (at least those featured) have some shades of grey. I'd definitely suggest you watch this pair of docs. I know it doesn't sound too pleasant if you're already fed up with them, but I think even the fairly familiar would be in for a surprise or two. The generational stuff is interesting, and there's even some non-Phelps family members who have joined the church (or who are trying). Louis spends a good amount of time with one man in particular who joined the church as an adult, bringing along his wife and teenage daughter.

I was really impressed by Louis (hadn't watched any of his specials before), and found them to be a lot stronger than similar documentary fare like Hell House or Jesus Camp, both of which I liked but which are relatively superficial.

For anyone interested:
The first one in its entirety can be watched here: http://topdocumentar...ily-in-america/
The second one (in four parts) is up on youtube starting here:

Louis Theroux has an amazing ability to get the most out of "subjects", I think the combination of unassuming geek Brit abroad lulls people into opening up to him. The Westboro Baptist stuff is excellent however his most recent doco was about Ultra Zionism in Israel...., it's an eyeopener.

Huge fan of Louis Theroux... The bit where the Nazis find out he is Jewish in the episode "Louis with the Nazis" chilled me to the core...

Anyways I saw the excellent film noir "Brick" for the second time the other day (hadn't seen it since it came out in 2006) my life that is a nicely crafted film...

Watched Machete last night. Its definitely what Expendables should have been. A terrible movie with terrible actors but knowing it terrible all the way through in an ironic way. I swear if theyd made that film terrible with the actors knowing their terrible then it would have been twice as good watching it ironically.

Also Danny Trejo gets all the actionin the fil but none of the girls seem to enjoy it unsurprisingly

Watched 127 hours last night. It was okay. Best part of the movie is the cinematography. By far.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I don't think I am ever going to get around to watching 127 hours. A story about a guy who cuts his arm off? Yeah... no thanks.

I loved 127 Hours. Great performance and really innovative cinematography. Also I dare anybody not to flinch for that last scene. I double dare ya!

In other news....
Green Hornet - 6/10

God, I wanted to punch Seth Rogen in the face. This movie could have been awesome. I mean there are some pretty good moments,90% of which is about Kato, and they certainly tick all the boxes when it comesto the action set pieces. But in the end it turns into a very loud but veryaverage bumbling superhero romp, with Rogen hamming it up all over the place, and Christoph Waltz phoning in a very lacklustre performance as the villain.Although to be fair, Waltz is just given such horrible material to work with(Really guys? A desert eagle with 2 barrels? For serialz?) that you reallycan't blame the guy.
Meh.

I'm watching the Fugitive - I haven't seen it in 7 or 8 years and yet I'm reciting all the dialogue. I think that's a good indicator that this movie is awesome.

I really loved the team of US marshalls hunting Ford. Great writing and acting when they manage to make you care about a group of people in so little time.

I quite liked US Marshalas aswell though it wasnt a patch on the fugitive.

On the subject of Tommy Lee Jones I watched the Hunted the other night. Not a bad film but could have been a bit longer to make you care about the characters a bit more and play out the fatherly role between the two. Still not bad

The Hunted is one of my favorite films of all time.

It doesn't need any more character development or story because it is what it is. A story of two men fighting to the death. In the end, their motivations, their needs, their morals, it means nothing. It all comes down to the hunt and the kill. That film is primal as fuck.
