Watched Sherlock Holmes.

Much better than I feared it would be. I think the female counterpoint (rachel somebody?) needed to be a 'stronger' role, more active or smarter or something, to counter Holmes better.

Other than that, the movie was very good, if the plot was a little more unpredictable (it was good, but not great) it would have easily been one of the best movies of 2009.

Downey Jr and Jude Law were both great. The evil guy (who I thought was Andy Garcia, but apparently is some guy named Mark Strong) was good, but his screen time was almost entirely him 'looking evil'. Meh.

I've not really heard much about this film, but the trailer looks good so it might be worth seeing when it comes out.

Saw Sherlock Holmes yesterday. Loved it, plus the interaction between Robert and Jude was piss funny. Worth going to see.

just saw Cloverfield and I must say... this film is balls-droppingly awesome. I think the concept of bringing the scope of a monster movie down to the bystanders / victims, to their level, was very interesting. action is done exceptionally well, and as for the monster... well, there's some charm to there only being snippets of it in the movie. it avoids getting "pettified", it remains a deadly god damn force and something you want to be far away from throughout the film's duration.

I'll say this. HOLY FUCKING SHIT, THAT WAS SIMPLY KICKASS.

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. Have to agree in general on Sherlock Holmes - I was quite pleasantly surprised. Obviously there were a couple of minor quibbles, but overall I'd say it was quite well done, and generally managed to walk the fine line between contemporary appeal and staying true to the spirit of the written form.

The high point for me was (gasp!) Jude Laws' performance. I genuinely forgot Watson was being played by him - formerly an actor I had firmly lodged in the pretty to slightly-better-than-mediocre bracket. This for me is always the mark of a performance I enjoyed.

I also enjoyed Sherlock Holmes - good fun, Robert Downey Jr is a reliable actor to go with for any quirky main character, and the whole thing worked out very well, even if the finale seemed a little bit weaker than the rest of the film.

I dunno - Downey and Law's performances were okay but i found the movie overall pretty weak. Lame plot, Blackburnthorndude was an unthreatening villain, action scenes fairly mild... and the only way they could have tried any harder to set up the sequel was to have called it 'SHERLOCK HOLMES 1/3'.

If i had seen it at home with beer it might have been better. For big screen dollars i was dissappointed.

Relatedly, save yourselves: don't go see THE BLIND SPOT. if you deeply love Sandra Bullock, wait for the disk.

I think I'm going to discount your criticism pretty severely if you can't get the name of the movie correct (The Blind Side). I too am waiting for the DVD release to watch it, but I absolutely loved the book the movie is based on. Lewis's book documents a true story (Oher is now playing for the Baltimore Ravens, and playing at a Rookie of the Year level too) and Oher's story is rather nice in showing the evolution of football, as well as the almost cosmic coincidence it took for a kid in a truly terrible situation to find a loving family, receive a good education and find a very high paying job doing something he loves.

I really like that Hollywood is doing movies like that and have heard that they've remained pretty respectful to the book and the truth. I'd like to reward that kind of moviemaking - rather than see more wastes of money like Couples Retreat.

Watched 'Daybreakers'.

Rather Entertaining. Certainly not the best 'Vampire' movie, but it is a new and interesting take.

Pretty good acting, even though I didn't like the character they made Willem Dafoe take, he tried to make it work, and seems to have done better than that character should have played.

Very Gore-Filled, not a movie to take the kids too, I would call it a 'good' movie, but certainly not a great one.

Would I watch it again? Maybe. In the theater again or purchase the movie? No.

I saw Sherlock Holmes today and despite receiving very mixed reports I flipping loved it. Robert Downey Jr is a madman, Jude Law is excellent as the long suffering Watson and Rachel McAdams is just plain HAWT. Hugely entertaining and enjoyable. ;)

Watched KNOWING last night.
despite having quite serious reservations with regards to this one...it actually turned out rather...ok.

Also finally got to see MILK on sunday.
Great movie... definitely recommend it.

OK here we have The Vulture Critics' Poll for the worst movies of 2009.

A couple of surprises there. There seem to be a few common elements, but also a wide divergence between the very long list of critics. I guess there's probably one there for each of us.

Just in case you think I'm just being a grump and looking only at the bad stuff, I tried to find the multiple-critics list for Best of 2009, but couldn't find it at www.rottentomatoes.com
There are plenty of other single-source lists, if you just google "best movies of 2009".

However, I did find the list of 100 best characters of the decade, plus there are some other links on the site that are fun to at least skim.
