thx fortrip
@D'Yamba
I agree with you in that area.. but retruning to godzilla.. was it badly directed or acted? i didnt think so but thats just my opinion.. the script was better than i thought it would be, especially compared to the Toho godzilla films
was a masterwork compared to "destroy all monsters" lol
perhaps i should clarify it somewhat.. badly done films suck, but films that are done to reasonable standards, and are criticised for failing to meet the desires of the veiwer shouldnt be rubbished because they fail to entertain them, they can just say "i didnt like it" or "its not my kind of thing"
thats fair enough, tastes vary. what really annoys me are people who criticise a film for doing what it set out to do, and i admit in the case of hellboy im not entirely objective, ive been waiting ages to see the damn thing, and it was better than i expected.. ive seen some really awful comic films in the past.. the flash, fantastic 4 (which was never officially released it was so badly done) the Jusice League, Generation X.. the list goes on and on... I thought it was fairly well done for such a relatively unknown work, and had pretty good acting, and retained the original comic feel, including the sarcastic one liners and deadpan humour.
in the case of godzilla i thought the same, it redefined what the godzilla fans were familiar with, and got criticised for doing so, but at the same time in striving to retain the original essence of the monster, they were criticised by people who failed to find a monster ripping up a city interesting.
I guess it all comes back to managing expectations.
A few of my mates who study film in uni blame the media for trying to make the filsm appeal to more than their own market and i think thats a fair comment. the way films are portrayed as being "the next star wars" or "the greatest work of fiction since the bible!"
if they came right out and gave you the real story "a monster terrorises NY" or "a boy, from hell, fights nazis and saves the world" then the masses would have no one to blame but themselves ... but im sure they would still find faults in it if it was technically perfect.
can anyone else think of films they were told to go and see and came out thinking "this sucks"
matrix 2 & 3 spring to mind.. but unlike many films, they were dreadfully done, dreadfully acted, and the dialouge ppl should be hung as a service to humanity!
*rant over.. again*
