So I finally sat down to watch SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE....

The story was excellent...but the animation caused us to turn it off half-way through and not bother finishing it. The constant insane colour flashes, the fact that they PURPOSELY took out the motion blur frames making it look fast and juddery, the fact that the background of ANY given shot had double lines that almost looked like 3D but weren't...was all so distracting and headache-inducing that neither my wife, or I could enjoy it. So disappointed, because I really got into the story...

What a shame. For me it's one of the prettiest not 2D-animated movies I've ever seen...

Agreed. And QT didn't even get to the actually-crazy visuals in the climax! :p

May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I finally got around to watching Get Out at the weekend. Sooooo good. And also as a white person without many non-white friends, soooooo awkward to watch!

Just watched The Dirt on netflix.
Based on Motley Crues book. I know they were stone wall fucking insane, and I know Nikki Sixx died ala Slash but how those guys (even allowing for dramatic liberty of the truth) are alive is beyond me.

Over all, and enough hits the right notes most of the way through, but the resolution after the split and ending was entirely too rushed compared to reasonable pacing through out the redt

He also didn't get to the What's Up Danger scene, the platonic ideal of the 'superhero coming into his own' sequence.

Honestly it's a genuine shame the visuals were unpalatable to him coz everything else about that film is so QT.

Also, also, also!!! Quite possibly the single greatest takedown of a supervillain in any superhero movie ever!
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

I had no problems watching it. I loved it. Best movie of 2018.

Yeah, I didn't want to comment on it while we were watching it, but then my wife piped up and said "I'm finding this hard to watch, what's up with the animation?"....at which point I realized it wasn't just me.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

If you’ve seen the original (ABRES LOS OJOS), Vanilla Sky is a bad copy.

I haven’t even heard of it I don’t think. Is it very old? Will look on Netflix.

At this point Vanilla Sky is very old.

It's the original film, and also stars Penelope Cruz...and it's 1997, so 4 years before Vanilla Sky.

As is usually the case, the earlier Spanish film is much more poignant, simple, and less overwrought.

This is accurate. :p

Very much like THE DEPARTED being a decent, but in hindsight mediocre copy of INFERNAL AFFAIRS. I always find that English remakes of foreign films are just never as good.

I feel like I need to better explain and illustrate (<-----haha!) what was bothering us about this film and how it was made.

See the three screenshots below. Everything that is not the focus (AKA not Peter or Miles) of the scenes...looks mildly out of focus, and in some cases is tripled in colour wash at the edges...almost like watching a film and not having 3D glasses on and the 2D bits in the foreground are sharp, but the background is a mess of blurs and colour wash. It's clear this was intentional, but add to that the fact that they intentionally also took out the motion blur frames....and it was physically distracting to try to watch it.

I don't like The Departed as much as Infernal Affairs, but in fairness it's not like the normal remake where they're just trying to do the same thing but for lazy people who can't be bothered with subtitles, it's a very different movie and it does a lot really well. The only reason I really like IA more is because The Departed changes the motivations of a couple of characters in ways that take all the moral subtlety out of the end.

I would agree with this take. But then my favourite Scorsese movie is the one everybody hates (BRINGING OUT THE DEAD) so perhaps my view is skewed?
