This looks disappointingly mediocre.

Hard agree. I honestly thought that the Disney deal would scuttle this flick onto the dusty shelves of studio forgetfulness, because honestly, we all know that the X-Men are going to get the MCU reboot in a few years time, so why bother? Especially why bother with the goddamned Dark Phoenix storyline...something we've all read ad nauseam in one form or another since the 80's and actually SAW already in X-Men 3. I just don't get the appeal to this now.

The ONLY thing I like here is the Grant Morrison/Frank Quietly X-suit designs, otherwise a big fat meh. I certainly won't see it in theatres, but if I hear it's really good I might rent it.

After the apparent (because i was so put off i didn't see it) debacle that was Apocalypse it would take massive glowing 'best thing since Black Panther' level praise to get me to spend theatre dollars on this.
XM3 was a farce of an adaptation of the Phoenix storyline. I'd love to think they can do better but am massively sceptical.

And let's remember that the guy who wrote and directed this one....is the guy who wrote X-3, Simon Kinberg, so trying not to see this as him DESPERATELY wanting a do-over is hard.

If he wanted a do over he probably shouldnt had cast the most annoying actress from Game of Thrones as the baddie.

It's less that she's annoying, and more that she can't really act.

Well, that's the thing isn't it- they think they have one last chance to fix that absolute debacle before the rights go back to Marvel. They'd probably have been better off actually leaving it for Marvel to do, but...
And tbh I think it looks interesting enough- the trailer isn't wonderful, but it doesn't feel like a trailer that has much to say about the film really. Could be meh, could be really quite good.

I'm just relieved that Bryan Singer isn't directing it to be honest.

Agreed. And my fervent hope is that he also doesn't get to direct Red Sonja either.

My 9-year-old daughter is super excited for DARK PHOENIX (and has been for like a year now), so I'm probably going to go see it regardless.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Last I heard, Red Sonja was shelved indefinitely. Could be to simply regroup, could be to let the Singer stigma dissipate (which would be foolish, since whenever they announce a new director, Singer will inevitably be part of the headline, so the remedy to that would be to entrust it with someone who'd actually be a breath of fresh air). Hopefully it's not to just let the project die.

Oh man, this trailer is ten times better than the first one.

Loving the vibe in this. Still don't like the no-bun hairdo, but I'll get used to it.

Not really sure why they're all American considering it all happened in Norway IRL but I'm definitely going to watch Lords of Chaos at some point...

American Animals -- this seemed to fly under the radar a bit. It's the real-life story of a bungled heist by four college-aged dudes in Kentucky. What's interesting is that aside from the narrative, it also has cutaway interviews with the real life guys, their families, and others in an Errol Morris doc kind of way. And there are some meta-narrative tricks done along the way, like when the real people disagree about certain details, that really pop. It's not life-changing or anything, but for a two hour movie it really flew by, and it manages the excitement and tension of a heist movie while grounding the stakes in real life drama. 3 1/2 stars.

Nerds assemble (notably QT)
Harry potter movies.
Is there a director's cut? Do different versions exist?
Most notably, if they do, what is the best version to watch?

No, but there really should be. If any movies needed extended editions it was these - so much lost from the books, especially the later ones.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Indeed, I believe there wasn't anywhere near enough camping in the woods in the movies of Book 7. :)

There was a fake poster making the rounds on Facebook a while back that said Netflix were rebooting HP as a TV series with 7 seasons, one season dedicated to each book and allowing them to go really in depth and not miss out so much detail.

Lots of people believed it was real and while it patently wasn't it made me sad. Cos that would be freaking awesome.

I seem to remember they tried flogging some "extended cuts" of the first two films but there was about five minutes of cut footage and then I think all the same bonus features as on the two disc DVD of the original cut. I'm assuming it didn't sell as I never saw anything but the first two and searching for them now doesn't yield anything.

It is sad that there probably won't be more in depth versions - I would have loved a version of the seventh book with less camping and more of the Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore background stuff in particular. And just more Sirius and Lupin in everything, because they were criminally underused.
