Yes, but do you think in the meantime Tay was just sitting on his ass in his tower? ... on second thought don't answer that.

point taken! however tay stikes me as one who doesnt want major rulling power and is content with his position as high mage. Kellanved on the other hand was never satisfied and kept pushing for more and more power. tays complacency would surely have led to Kellanved just becoming more and more powerful in all aspects of magic.

No.
Tay doens't want to rule, because that would distract him from his magical studies.
Whereas Kellanved was busy with other stuff.
So of the two, Tay pursued magic further.
Tay is on the point of ascendancy, possibly already ascended, without the use of azath etc, whereas kell needed to use the azath to ascend.

dont think Kellanved did need the deadhouse to assend. what he needed it for was the access to the house of shadow and the rulling seat on it. Kellanved would not have been happy with just assention he needed to rule! yes tay would have been researching and improving however the amount of widespread research Kellanved did would almost certainly have opened other avenues of power unaccessable to tay

Care to explain why you think that?
He's good, bt we haven't seen him do anything other people couldn't.

We've seen more of him than Kellanved, but never mind. I don't really have any reason for thinking that, but Iskaral just strike me as immortal and unconquerable. I bet he can overcome any kind of magical assault.

But what would make you think that he was a stronger mage than Quick, Tay or Kelanved?

Toc makes a good point. Do we even know the extend of Kel's power before he became a god?

He's harder to make an argument for because we see so little of the mortal, unlike QB and Tay which have many references.

And Pust does seem like the kind of character who always comes out of a scrap and at the end you wonder how the hell he's still around.

Hmmm does say something for Iskaral that shadowthrone thought him capable and able to take dragnipur and potentially use it

I think there's alot of small hints that Iskaral is powerful as few. He is the Magi/Magus of High House Shadow, Shadowthrone let him write the book of HH Shadow, Shadowthrone feared Iskaral getting his hands on Dragnipur (like Stradivarius stated), he defeated Dejim Nebrahl easily etc..

While Pust is a formidable mage, capable of using various warrens like Meanas,Rashan, Thyr and Mockra, I don't think he's better than say Tay or QB or the Ceda. Sure he utterly pulverizes Dejim, but then everyone kick's Dejim's ass. And ST chose Pust as his magus only because there was nobody else. It's clear that ST hates Pust and doesn't thrust him.

I'd say it may be best to wait for evidence of that other than what he says.
He's not exactly reliable.

Its been gone over pretty thoroughly on the Toll the Hounds thread of almost the same name.

http://www.malazanempire.com/IPBforum/inde...showtopic=13199

Title from what we know the most powerful mage.

I like Beak. Now that he is dead I wish he was still around. The Savant of Magic users.
What I do not know fills many more volumes than what I do know.
