Hey all, just wondering what you would consider to be the best rts, or even strategy game in general. I loved the C&C, Rise of nations and legends were both amazing (Legends being under rated). Age of Empire II (and the star wars offshoot) and III were great. Any Total War had me busy for days. Starcraft II is good (though my skill level pales to those who can consider themselves "good" at that game). So what were your favorites, and which would you suggest playing?
My favorite may Mount and Blade Warband (modded of course). The game itself seemed rather pointless, in that it did not give you any direction. That does not mean there isn't a shit ton of stuff to do. There were many flaws, but I find the game great for the same reason that I loved Morrowind. It has so much potential to be more.

Does Mount and Blade even count as a strategy game? I mean, it is really much more action oriented. Is Dragon Age: Origins a strategy game? No. Same principle.

I gotta go with AOE 2. I found AOE 3 to be way too simple, too easy at times, and not equipped to have fine control of units like the Total War series. That being said, I'm sure Shogun 2 will be my new favorite strategy game of all time.

Original Shogun, Shogun 2 (probably, Empire sucked balls and Napoleon was barely worth the TW name so let's hope they're back on track. That said, Takeda for the win!). I LORVED THQs original Dawn of War, and DoW 2 is pretty pleasant too (just finished my first three games against the AI in Retribution).

However, I am in essence much more of a TBS gamer. Which you didn't ask after. Which makes me sad.

Oh sir, I disagree with you on the mount and blade point. Granted, depending on how much progress you made in the game i can understand where you are coming from. Early game basically involves a grind to upgrade your character, rep, and possibly your army (you will fail trying to do any of these multiple times). Late game, when you are running your own state and have to deal with taxation, fiefs, recruitment and training, building up infrastructure, strategic garrisons -- trust me when i say that things get much more strategic. It is less hands on though. A lot of the strategy involves diplomacy (doubly so if you have the diplomacy mod), so appointing a lord or whatever, then tasking them to do something. It gets even more convoluted when you invest in industries and such. The combat is mainly action/adventure early on, but when dealing with 500+ people on the battle map at the same time (using battle sizer), then it no longer comes down to you doing all the work; Your army has to do it for you, because it may be impossible to accomplish it yourself.
Dragon age is only similar in terms of early game, and even then just barely.

Wished I played more TBS games. Never really played Civ, though I do have Civ V on my comp at the moment. the only turned based games I have played would be total war, and might and magic (long time ago).

Original is your classic RTS, with base building, and unit building. It tried to really expand on the ideas from "Company of Heroes" when it came to points and squad-based gameplay, but it is still very much an RTS.


DoW2, otoh, is far more tactical, with almost 0 emphasis on base building. Mind you, I haven't tried DoW2 multi-player, and I hear there's some RTS aspects there, though they are very much streamlined for the sake of quick, non-stop action.

so, really, it depends on what you are looking for.

Thank you. I suppose I'll go for the first one for now. Base building is one of the things that I look forward to. Not so much up for the constant combat at the moment (a la Starcraft II).

in that case, go for the original. and then get Dark Crusade, b/c that expansion adds the Necron and Tau.
You can skip Winter Assault, unless you're an IG fanboy.

so, really, it depends on what you are looking for.

DoW2 multiplayer/ skirmish is all about movement control and micro management, as well as resource naxing and minning. I think it is awesome, like speed chess.

Basically, DoW1 is an RTS; DoW2 is a lot more like the tabletop. From what I hear.

Angel Gate is one of the tougher levels. I did it with the Force Commander tanking, Avitus at maximum range (FC at the edge of his field of fire, Tactical Marines as melee backup but in range stance. 4th team doesn't really matter, just load them up with grenades and rapid guns. thid team to use the gatehouse. ouys may be best. You'll need luck to survive the double Fexes, though.

Took a few levels in badass on Calderis and Typhon and maybe now I'll return to the gate. Maybe Meridian wasn't the way to go as first - I had hardly any trouble on the other planets. Also, I got the Dreanaught now, though I thought it'd be stronger. How do I get it an autocannon? When do I get Terminator Armor?

You get Termi armor after you beat the Eldar at Angel Gate. You can then get two more sets by killing the ork warboss on Calderis and the Avatar of Khaine on Typhon.

So I played some DoW dark crusade last night. It seemed pretty fun, though I only played for an hour or so. I was wondering how high the unit cap went. sofar I've only played skirmish, and the cap for everything is like 20 or so. I thought I was missing some research or something (playing space marines). Does it get any higher?

Oh yes. The cap is expanded in various ways (depending on the race). I'm not sure I ever hit a hard-coded unit cap, but I'm sure you can look it up.

The way I enjoyed breaking the cap with Necrons back in Dark Crusade was before they patched their 'resurrect infantry over the unit cap' limit to 25/20. 38/20 worth of Necron Warriors porting in around a cloaked Monolith? HI BABY, HOW ARE YOU? DON'T MIND ME, I'M JUST GAUSSING YOUR BASE TO DEATH

How can you mention Dow2 and not mention thadeus? I loved his jet pack abilities...level him up and you can send his squad of near enough alone to take the bonus objectives (as long as you pay attention to him)

Hated cyrus and his scouts, never bothered with them.


Just started playing mount and blade (because of this forum), and after restarting about 10 times finaly got off to a decent start. I Get a decent sized leveled up group, (in part because one of the kings told me to collect taxes and then never wanted to ask for it back...) i then get hired as a mercenary by the aforementioned king, but they didnt ask me to do anything so i keep on trading. Then while im blissfully traveling through the Kingdom of the nords, my employer declares war and i have half the nordic army chasing me down and i lose all my awesome units :p
