The Civilization series is a turn-based, global strategy game played on a squared/diamond (soon to be hex, with Civ V) grid. Terrain types and resources are fixed on the map, and the players build cities and units (from cities). It's the quintessential "4X game."

I didn´t even know Civ V is gonna be released... Gods when?!
Anyway: Medieval II- Total War. One of the best strategy games ever made. It´s awesome combination of turn-based and real-time game.
Like England when got some cannons guarded with heavy infantry, some platoons of longbows and heavy cavalry on sides... Even better with pikemen instead of heavy infantry... Masssacre!!!

in defence England dosent need pikemen at all, the sharpned stakes are WAAAAAAY better, the armored swordsmen are good against other infantry and with stakes infront of them they are one of the best defencive units in the game, also in empire light infantry is the bane of cavalry

Napoleon is like an updated version of Empire, concentrating on Napoleons campaigns. (You don't need Empire)
It's all been tweaked a bit - looks a bit more stylish. Map is Europe, not world - although there are trade routes out to other global areas, you just have to stick a merchantman on the spot on the map to get the trade income.
The time is different too - each turn is a number of weeks, not 6 months. There is the option to play as Napoleon, working through his campaigns. This is really good, but follows a more linear path than other TW games. There is also the option to play as any of the opposing allies in a campaign against the French.
And, all the generals are real historical figures, like Nelson etc. There is also attrition to the troops, which happens when you cross a desert for example, and supply depots and routes become more significant as you invade enemy countries.
I think it's great, the naval battles are brilliant, and you can play historical battles like Waterloo.
(I still would have liked to see Sharpe in there somewhere..)

Seeing as this thread is about strategy games, how about some nostalgic trip back in time? Anyone remembers Settlers 2 for example? Lords of the Realm (not RotR2, but the first one, with England and Wales)? And, a game I'm playing a lot lately, Europa Universalis 2? EU2 is very similar HoI btw, even though I've yet to try HoI. One day I will though. Hopefully before December 2012 LOL:)

EU2 is pretty awesome. there was a really nice mod for it--the Alternative Grand Campaign, which included about 300% more historic events for every side, making the game follow history closer.
I, sadly, never played the first Lords of the Realm, although I've played the hell out of the second.

I agree mentalist=). Haven't tried that campaign you mentioned, hopefully I'll get to it before too late. Gosh, Lotr (hahahah sounds way too close like Lord of the Rings this, but it is Lords of the Realm I'm referring to of course) the old one, is just.. I dunno, you should try it to get it really. It is a classic, by the pure definition of the word. Cattle and sheep and everything, like the second, however much unrefined compared to the second. Very much like the differences between Civ and Civ2. I still go for the old stuff, don't know why. I just like it...
couldn't help myself noticing on earlier posts on this thread, a LOT of discussion concerning MEdieval Total War2, coincidentaly my favourite total war game, main reason being the terrain. Heck, I remember once when playing Venice, I had two (yes as in 2) units of crossbowmen, pavise or something they were called, which I had placed not far from the HRE city in Italy, on a hilly terrain no less. And that puny force was attacked by a force with no less than 14 regiments, a Holy Roman Empire (Germaniac) force. Seeing as my units were safe on the top of the hill, and the germs having to climb uphill, under a constant arrow bobmardement, well, needless to say the battle was won. By me! Even I got surprised at that result. Epic Victory no less. Even had a commander popp, you get those when winning unwinnable battles, the man of the hour!.. That being said, my fav,. country has to be England. Their longbowmen at the period were simply unmatched. No wonder the English won like they did in the beginnings of the 100 years war..

I am currently playing EU3, where the Grand Campaign opening is ~1300, and the Hundred Years War almost always breaks out (resumes?) immediately. England almost never does very well, either, which is weird.
Paradox Interactive is a cool developer, but their games are CONSTANTLY buggy. My EU3 crashes whenever the tab key is pressed. Their new game on Steam is Magicka, and, while awesome, is FULL of bugs.
ALSO: RE: Civ V, don't bother. Civ V is awful by comparison. Just stick with Civ IV, and wait until they fix everything with an expansion.

you see, he reason I liked Medieval, was BECAUSE of LotR2---because that game was all about winning against crazy odds. especially because the AI lOVED to mob you with an army 4 times your size, but composed entirely of peasants.

I loved EU2, and hated 3.
Anyone played Victoria, and/or Victoria 2? I had to give up on Vicky 2 as despite my best attempts, I'd bankrupt my nation nearly instantly every single time while still developing an economy.
Paradox' best games imho are the Hearts of Iron line, though. 3, especially with Semper Fi, is awesome, despite the AI still not being able to handle certain aspects of the game well enough to be a real challenge - and Japan joining the Comintern thanks to the Tokyo must be Comintern default victory challenge.

Sure do! Removing the paths and flagpoles mechanic was what killed the franchise in my eyes. It was iconic, unique!

Settlers 2 was pretty epic.
Also, Taps, personally I think Crusader Kings were the best thing Paradox ever came up with, but I might be slightly biased....

Never played them. Settlers always put me off because of the cutesie graphics, and I think Anno 1404 does the infrastructure building and interlocking economy better than most other similar sim games (then again, never played the good Settler games, 6 was shite).
Crusader Kings was really hard to get back in the days when all you could buy were games in boxes. When I could buy it through gamersgate, it looked like a clone of already existing Paradox games and there were newer ones to buy/play, so passed it over.
