you made me revisit Civ IV and... damn you. no other game can be as INFURIATING as Civilization. there's nothing quite like a single unit of Phalanx (no bonus vs cavalry, I might add - bonus vs infantry instead) holding off 6 of my Keshiks with almost no harm taken... it's. really. fucking. annoying. I need a new chair, keyboard and mouse I think, these got badly damaged today.
at the same time you can't stop playing.
damn this game.

Ahh the pain.

The only time this pain has ever been removed was playing the Ghengis Khan mod game, where you have those camps that just produce unit after unit. Well attacking a city when you have about 40 units behind you, kinda dont care about a few loses =P.

This is why i like to dominate with culture, less fighting hopefully! at least until i have units better than the enemy =P. I havent played that game in a veeeeeeeery long time now!

I've gotten back into playing good ol' Age of Empires 2 with some friends over Hamachi/GameRanger.

Still the best RTS I've ever played. ;)

Really? I might have to check it out..

I had the old AoE's years back, and it was good, but got tricky with big maps and lots of units all fighting at the same time. From what I remember, anyway.

Is AoE's 2 worth picking up as a change from the Total War games?

Anyone still playing Empire Total War? Have the bugs been fixed yet? I've got a better pc to run it on now, but I'm not going to bother unless I hear it's been patched up.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

They fixed the bugs... and added some new ones. But its a lot better than it started out. Battle AI works most of the time, and the campaign AI is far far less stupid. Even so, I think its worth plugging this mod, it makes the game a lot more interesting and realistic.

Wow, twcentre is about 98% complaints about Empire. I want to play it, but I can't see the point in starting something that still crashes so badly that you have to restart the whole campaign.
Mod looks nice though.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

They were largely the same with Medieval, and yet, few people went back to Rome. Its a fact that E:TW failed to deliver the typical TW standard of fun.

I personally think it is partly because the distinctions between ranged, shock and mobility have blurred so badly compared to all previous TW games - the era and warfare type sadly doesn't allow of diversity in strategy and army build up - no nation for example is primarily focused on shock combat or can do so more than others through their tech tree.

Nor are there a lot of new units to look forward to for much of the second half of a campaign (ok, skirmishers...), where in medieval entire rosters were turned upside down.

The bitching probably also continues due to the februari (?) 2010 release of Napoleon: TW, which gives people the idea that CA doesn't care about fixing Empire and wants to put it behind them asap.
If you can bother to wait the 4 months, I'd wait for that one, unless there's a great offer for you, pricewise.

And while I'm on the subject, has anyone tried the 'Roma Surrection' mod for Rome TW?

Nope, afaik, N:TW is a stand-alone game containing both a full (European) campaign as you're used to, and three linear campaigns detailing the life and conquests of Nap himself. You won't require E:TW to run it, either.

I thought they had different development teams on the games, as most of E:TW dev people have been working on patches and the multiplayer beta, while N:TW was decided and started to be developed a while ago, as soon as Empire came out.

Also, I have Empire Total War and have only ever had 1 crash. My friend has never had any crashes. Admittedly the one problem used to be it took years to go through one turn, but they have really sped that up so I don't really have many complaints about the game (well bar the usual that Battle AI is still too easy to beat, and Campaign AI is now waaaaaaaaaaaay to aggressive).

The best RTS in terms of gameplay and depth has to be Supreme Commander, because compared to every other game, the different types of units and the balance of the game is easily the best, which I admit even though I am more the adrenaline junkie RA3 type of guy.

Has anyone downloaded the Third Age LotR's mod for Medieval 2 Total War?

It looks great, but I'm having some trouble with the download.

Scratch that, it all works. It's a complete reworking of the Medieval Kingdoms expansion, with a huge middle earth campaign map, and all the races represented.

All new cut scenes, and clips from the films, and music too. Awesome mod.

cool!! Can't wait to get a half-decent PC so I can run this game again.

I did pick up civ revolutions for my ps3 though. that's a pretty fun game so far. Its no medieval, but its still pretty damn cool

Finally bought Total War: Empires, only to realize that I can't have installed on my computer during exam period. That game is dangerous!

Yes you do need Kingdoms, but you only have to install one campaign. You can pick up Medieval + Kingdoms for about £12 now anyway.

The mod is quite big - biggest one I've seen, actually, but then it does make a lot of changes.

And there are... trolls!
