"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Some interesting observations, after 31 people have voted:

- MoI has exactly 1/3 of the 1st place votes; HoC is the only one of Erikson's novels to get none.
- MoI ranks first among all books, and has the lowest standard deviation (of SE's books) to back that up.
- The second-lowest standard deviation? HoC, which ranks last among SE's novels. So we agree on that one too, apparently.
- MoI is the only book to appear on everybody's top 5 list.
- DG is the next-most popular, appearing on 71% of lists.
- DG is also the most controversial book, with the highest standard deviation.

1. MoI +5
2. tBH +4
3. DG +3
4. RG +2
5. MT +1

(I'm rereading RG right now and still need to re-read TTH so who knows, maybe I'll change my mind. RotCG would be 4th but I figure it's an Erikson ranking so I didn't put it in.)

You actually missed deetee's MT vote, so MT currently has 71 points.

This isn't an Erikson ranking. Give RotCG some love; it needs it!

I am, for reasons I don't really understand, cheering on the Reaper's Gale votes. Perhaps I'm like a jaded lover or something. I don't know. I"m drunk.

DoD should provide a nice new dynamic.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....
