All the while you're sitting there with the book in your hand shouting at the pages: "FUCKING STEP ON IT YOU STUPID WOMAN!!! ITS A CHICKEN!!! NOT A FUCKING GAR!!! YOU ARE TWENTY TIMES THE SIZE OF THE THING!!! RIP ITS HEAD OFF!!! FOR CHRIST SAKE YOU DAFT COW JUST FUCKING HURL IT INTO A WALL AND STOMP THE FILLING OUT OF IT!!! RAAAAAAAGGGEEEEEEE!!!

I'm surprised Goodkind didn't just have the chicken rape her and thereby complete the scene.

Lmao, truly 'fowl' villains. That's a good one lol.

And Apt, I'd imagine you have an extensive list of epic fantasy books under your belt in terms of reading, so you should know that power is not restricted to the size of the body haha. Take for example Moby! The bhok'rakal or whatever it is :ball:

yes, but Moby was actually a Soletaken demon.

this is just an avian with illusions of grandeur.

hmm
bottom line to this argument, i think is that none of us have unlimited amount of time on our hands.
we ALL pick and choose what we read, since there's SO much stuff out there in SFF, now more than ever before, with new promising writers popping up left and right.
considering the amount of choice we have, of course people will make the judgement on whether or not to invest their money (and time) into the author based on the information provided to them--that's why those synopses and excerpts are there in the first place--to attract attention of people who are browzing, trying to make ac hoice as to what to spend their money on, whic h book out of the hundred books on the shelf to pick and take home.
As such, if the excerpt/synopsis that you are provided with does not capture your attention, or gives you a good impression of what it is, you are not gonna purchase.

We make judgement decisions almost every day in our day-to-day lives wthout having access to ALL the information. Humans HAVE to use heuristics ("rules of thumb") in order to avoid processing ALL the information out there, otherwise we'd suffer tremendous info overloads.
What i'm trying to say, I guess, is that as a consumer, what I have been presented with does not entive me to spend money and time on Sword of Truth. As such, I have formed an opinion that it's not worth my time. I don't think I can argue on the qualities of the series of the author/series any further, but it is sufficient to me.

Oh I absolutely agree. It's impossible to live by attempting to attain every bit of information and thereby make judgments based upon it. However, that is life. What I'm talking about is books. Books that you can fully read, whether it be in a long time or a short time and thus make judgments upon. They're static, they don't change and they'll always be there, so why not read them before you speak shit on them? :ball:
I still heart Goodkind.

And how was Kahlan supposed to know it was just an illusion of grandeur? Just like how was the Crokus supposed to know about Moby? It doesn't matter whether it was illusion or reality within the book, just that it had the premise of power within it. Enough to give cause for caution.

IT WAS A CHICKEN! ... A CHICKEN... AN EVIL CHICKEN! A CHICKEN THAT WAS EVIL!

It would be okay if Goodkind was having a laugh like when the killer rabbit showed up in Monthy Python and the Holy Grail. But he was being serious. Nothing in that scene was tongue in cheek. He wanted us to believe that Kahlan was in real danger because a chicken was nibling her hand and clucking menacingly.

FUCKING KICK IT THROUGH THE WALLLLLL!!!!

Bah.

So much anger.

lol, i'm sorry, assail, but when i was growing up, i'd spend my every summer on a farm. and I know what you do with a chicken that thinks more of itself than it actually is (which is a walking egg-production machine)

If a chicken tries to give you attitude, you KICK IT IN THE RIBS.
and it immidiately shuts up. usually permanently.

Oh I agree lol, but then again, this is fantasy, and then again, would you be able to kick Moby in the ribs? After all, he's just a glorified chicken lol

i'm sorry, but Moby is a winged monkey. that's fantasy.

here, on the other hand, is your regualr household chicken that may (with a stretch) be considred rabid.

there's a world of difference.

So you're saying that a magical sword is not fantasy? I mean after all, it's just a sword.

I don't recall speaking shit about them--like I said, I haven't read them.
however, from the numerous excerpts that i've been exposed to over my 2 years on this forum, I've come to the conclusion that Sword of Truth is in all likelyhood not a good investment of the time and money reading an 11-book series would require.
and I feel free to comment on the excerpts, because they are what formed this opinion of mine. I'm not generalizing to the whole series, but I can definitely say that I dislike this or that excerpt

no, i did not say that.

sigh
I guess we just have different levels of tolerance for absurdity.
to you, evil chicken seems a novel and original idea.
to me it is simply absurd.

However, we are each entitled to our opinion.

I understand. I was never saying you spoke shit, that was more in reference to those who do. It's their right, I'll listen to it and we all have differing opinions. Still, I'll say my piece as well :ball:

Haha it's not so much that I see an evil chicken as a novel and original idea, it's more that I accept that fantasy can lead down many avenues, I don't think they're absurd or stupid because that's how fantasy is, anything is possible within the world being written about.

I read them all, and I'd like to start a fire with them. I thought the ending was the cheapest cop out and give up on a plot of all time. I mean you've got a great villain in the dream guy, and at the end the collar was put on him and then he was killed! That's it, he made everyone suffer through what?, 7 novels and you just choke him off at the end? Come on make him bleed, cut off some body parts, burn some parts...DO SOMETHING!

It could have been hilarious like the scene in RG with
Spoiler
but he tried to make it epic...therein lay the problem.

Yes, you have to read everything to know precisely.
There will always be ups and downs, parts where an authors writing is better, parts where it is worse.

However, you can judge the skill of writing in the excerpt.

And if someone cannot write well in an excerpt, or has a style you dislike, it is unlikely that there style/ability will completely change massively, imo.

So yes, you won't know exactly which parts of books are good/bad, but you will probably have a decent general idea about whether or not you will enjoy them.
