I asked my 16 year old niece why in her tweets she and her teenage friends add extra letters to words...ex. "Heyyy, That is SSSSOOOO awwwwesomeeeee! #lml"

and the answer I received was "I don't know, it's just something we do. Just in texts and tweets though not in school."

Shakes head.

I'm wracking my brain attempting to recall if when I was a teen if I ever did anything that served absolutely no purpose like that....and I don't think I did.

Teenagers.

I'm endlessly curious how such a way of writing ever came to be in the first place. Did a teen one day just think "Hey, I know how we can rebel and be cool. Let's look illiterate!"

The mind, she boggles.

Olympics 2012 (maybe I'll get sued for saying this): Army troops to ensure safety and security, constant air surveillance over East London with Police helicopters and just recently with what looks suspiciously like Army helicopters made up with the Olympic Logo paintwork, missile defense during the Games- more reminiscent of last year's riots really, and that's not a pleasant memory. Where do I misunderstand theOlympic spirit?

Further, have a look at this: London Olympics Games and Paralympic Games Act of 2006: http://www.london201...ting-rights.pdf

In short: none other than the official sponsors are allowed to use the words Olympic, Games, 2012 or London etc... Should you be a shopkeeper and have the urge to put up some Olympic looking decoration in your window, or you own a cafe and think it's a good idea to serve the Olympic burger or Iced Cafe Olympia chances are you will be asked to take that down or stop serving, in fact, police has been granted powers under the criminal law to enter your "land and premises and remove, destroy, conceal or erase any infringing article".

At the venues, apparently you won't be able to pay with MasterCard, only Visa, no Burger King, only Macky Dee's etc.

Plus a long long list of other needless inconveniences which are going to disrupt the routine of at least 2 million people who travel daily into the city for work such as impact on public transport, delays for deliveries...

Sorry, but to me this is kind of nitpicky and flies in the face of your first complaint about Olympic spirit. To be honest, the Olympics is going to bring in A LOT of revenue to your city and country...that's No. 1, and No. 2 is for a couple of weeks you have to suck it up and deal with the increased traffic, delays, people ect. It's the Olympics, you've known for like 4 years that it's coming...did you expect it to be hovering above you the whole time and not disrupting life? It's what? Two weeks? That's not a lot to ask for a community to show some spirit...meanwhile all the Brits I know (including members of my own family) are doing little but complaining.

I dunno, seems like so much sour grapes to me.

Were the Olympics to come to Toronto, I'd be seriously proud and I'd deal with the transit, traffic, people hiccups...simply because of the nature of the event is meant to be about unity. It can't help the fact that it is such a huge draw, and such a mind-blowingly complex organizational nightmare. That's just its nature.

Not to get on your case. Sorry.

Get a Segway.

Or more seriously, get to a true physiotherapist (one who is actually athletic, understands the nature of demanding sports/jobs) and work on your ankles/legs. There could be a muscular imbalance somewhere in your posterior chain that's manifesting itself in messed up legs/feet. I'm talking more than just rehab - this is "prehab", or work put in to make sure you don't have the problems you're having.

QT - complaining is what we Brita do best. It's a national pass time - we'd be gold medalists in it. Leave us to it and judge us on the games once they start. I'll be commuting through it and our business supply chain will be seriously disrupted Plus our ISP is warning us about problems. I'll complain loudly and still enjoy it.

Revenue- yes. Has been projected to be up to £10bn. I agree, it's a lot of money. But what does it mean, really? The projected cost of getting London ready was higher than expected- as usual. And with projected revenue, it's usually the other way round. It's lower than projected.
The high hopes of increasing the profile of the city by attracting the Olympics and improving infrastructure and creating venues and housing etc and hence more long-term revenue has as far as I know only really worked in Barcelona to some moderate extent.
London is suffering at the upper limit of infrastructure - there's not a lot of room for improvement. Besides, London has been one of the greatest and most influential cities - in terms of science, history, art etc... for the past 500 years- what exactly can the Olympic games add to that?

If you go visit facilities in past Olympic cities, they are usually decaying and depressing places because there's no money to maintain them.

You know, I am all for doing things for the greater good and taking one for the team. I just don't see any of that in the Olympic Games. There are other, more worthy causes to spend the money. For example on food for school kids in the deprived areas of this great city- whose families don't have money to buy decent food. That's a long-term investment into the country and will create revenue.

This. Unless you just twisted your ankle its one thing. Otherwise, fixing your ankle without fixing the cause will just prolong this on and on and on.

Nah. The posterior chain is basically your entire back from neck down to legs. It's the column of bone, muscle and tendons that your body is built around. The best place to fix problems is to work on your hips and your back - get them strong and the rest generally falls into place.

A good physiotherapist can watch you run for a little bit, watch you do certain ranges of motion and go "You've got Issues X, Y and Z". Then they tell you to do these exercises, expect you to realize that your body is effed up and that you're going to have to do some serious training and hard work to get it un-effed up. The good news is that most of the time, just being aware of the issues and knowing what you can do to fix them isn't drastic surgery or just giving up can really help people battle back from these things.

Common issues are covered really well by EXRX - the best no-nonsense site out there for weightlifting exercises (so bare bones that it's essentially a sports medicine textbook).

I've got some hamstring issues and need to increase my hip flexibility as well.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Turns out I have GOUT. For crying out loud, I'm 27 not 70! Apparently something has caused uric acid to build up in my ankle which is what gout is. Have been reading up on it and apparently people (including those my age) can have a gout attack for no real reason except that it happens, and I am on the right drugs - apparently naproxen and resting up do the work. It's annoying being off work, and for some reason slightly embarrassing. Makes me seem old...

Gout is multi-factorial but it does include genetic predisposition and diet. So you shouldn't feel embarrassed about it. Lots of young people get it.

Be sure to stay away from seafood, lettuce etc.

For me it's the unattended missile stations being set up on the roofs of blocks of flats with a three mile range and which require Prime Ministerial permission to launch which will either not come fast enough or reduce any incoming threat (or perfectly innocent misidentified flight) to burning scraps of metal falling over populated areas, combined with the ability to just talk yourself into the construction site without papers or ID or a gear check, combined with the £284 million contract to G4S for 10,000 security staff and having only a fraction of them actually available so (hopefully G4S but more likely) the taxpayer has to fork out £8 mil for at least 5000 soldiers to cover the gaps and barely trained new G4S recruits (oh, and guess who's a major shareholder for G4S? Sebastian Coe! What a surprise!) combined with the use of the old kind of security checkpoints that have large queues and masses of people all holding signs saying 'Don't bother trying to get it, just set the bombs off right here in this huge crowd' that have been phased out of use in recent times, that's what's concerning me about Olympic safety.

Not to get on your case. Sorry.

The way the Games have been going has been a particular topic of interest to me, and this Vice Guide to the Olympics four part video series I've literally just found (took a break from this post to watch part 1, will watch the rest after) is a fantastic summary and a really interesting look into the kind of things going on in London. (edit: watched the whole thing, the last one is a bit NSFW but save a few silly bits it's an excellent watch)

There are so many terrible things happening around the Olympics:

The bill increasing from £2 billion to £9 billion

The implementation of specific Olympic athlete staff and sponsor only traffic lanes throughout London which incur a £130 fine (more than doing 40 in a 30 zone or drink driving) if you go in them during the games without being an emergency vehicle with and only with the blues and twos going

These lanes along with bus lanes filling up any of the many two lane roads there and in the first day of them becoming official causing a 32 mile jam even before the Games proper

The prevention of anyone wearing non-sponsor company clothing - if you wear a Nike shirt you will be kicked out of the Olympic zones, if you walk in with a Burger King meal you'll be thrown out etc

Being banned from using the words Olympic, Games, 2012, Summer, Sport and some others in connection, also the Olympic colours in order

A website showing a countdown to the start of the new four Summer and Winter Games showing London's as 'the capital of England' due to, and I quote, 'legal threats'

McDonalds banning the purchase of any chips anywhere in the Olympic zones unless they're with fish (and recently due to outcry they deigned to allow pie and chips as well) or McDonalds meal

Free water fountains which will have enormous queues and the largest container of water allowed is 100ml (eg under a third of a can of Coke)

People being evicted from their homes both by greedy landlords after guests for the games and as covered in that link earlier the actual London authorities in an attempt to gentrify the area by the games

Construction of a cable car connecting two areas with far less foot traffic then would justify transport between except they're both near Games venues, oh and taxpayer funded again

Over half of tickets being given exclusively to sponsors with barely any left to be sold to members of the public

Sponsors promising to only let employees with a history of assisting in social areas carry the torch around the UK and then letting people do so regardless of position or history and hiding their backgrounds from the official site

London having the lowest number of incoming tourists and booked rooms in years, starting even before the shitty weather, in order to avoid the city during the Games

Facilities constructed for the games not being close enough to possible users to be cost effective enough to keep open afterwards with the exception of one swimming pool

Oh god there's so much more I can't even remember

There are cool things about the games, there was a nice story about I think the Rwandan team enjoying hanging around in a town somewhere and getting a hero's welcome, and the actual events themselves will be good to watch. But there is much dodgy and terrible stuff happening around them which is going to completely overshadow it and the whole thing will be a total disaster. It just makes me angry, you know?

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

The thing about the dodgy and terrible stuff is that it isn't London Olympics specific. It's an Olympic problem in general. So complaints should be aimed mostly at the IOC. Apart from blaming the UK government for approving the bid in the first place and getting into bed with the filthy bastards, once we got the games the rest was inevitable and so doesn't really warrant a rant. You have to go to the root cause, everything else is just hot air. Whilst targeting the IOC, you then also have to complain to FIFA for the same issues around the World Cup, UEFA for the Euro's and all other associations/committee's that organise global sporting events.

Transport is probably the only unique London issue and it can't be that unique other than the volume of traffic the city endures on a normal day. I think we can cope with the extra people on a daily basis - it's busy but fine when there's something big on at Wembly or the Diamond Jubilee for example. The problem will arise when one of the underground lines goes down or something else that's likely to happen in any other 2 week period. Anyone travelling by car in London deserves to be sat in traffic for their sheer stupidity.

As someone who works in London, I'm at the point where I'm reconciled with throwing good money after bad and we might as well enjoy it. I reserve the right to moan on a daily basis about the underground being packed though.

Yes, I know. It makes me fucking angry too.

To add to it, over the past seven years a large part of the Lottery funds were channeled towards Olympic sports and athletes, and this money was lost to other projects or education or heritage or artists which have previously been funded by and relied on the funding of the National Lottery.

Holy snap. I had no idea! That's a lot of REALLY crazy shit going down.

I retract my earlier complaint about the sour grapes...up to now I'd only heard of folk annoyed by the increased people, traffic and such...

Crazy. Thanks for informing me Illy. Seriously, that is a lot of strange and messed up stuff for an Olympics...

amphi... did you just tell Tiste he has a fat ass???

Nah. The posterior chain is basically your entire back from neck down to legs. It's the column of bone, muscle and tendons that your body is built around. ...

So he has a fat back. Ok, got it.

Gout is multi-factorial but it does include genetic predisposition and diet. So you shouldn't feel embarrassed about it. Lots of young people get it.

Be sure to stay away from seafood, lettuce etc.

...and stock up on prune juice old man.

I feel for London and its peoples. You're on the receiving end of something most of you never asked for and if asked would have cheerefully done without.

I do, however, admit to a certain malevolent glee in the comeuppance for all those in the UK who could not possibly talk enough shite about Vancouver during the winter games and stated again and again how 'London will get it right!'.

I thought of a solution: red quintuple-decker buses. Not sure what it would help or how, but nevertheless I am sure it will.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.
