besides, that demon in paranormal activity just doesn't seem in any way real.

Classic horror in substance... Just SO poorly executed. It didn't build effectively, it didn't climax effectively, and the ending was just rubbish. None of it felt authentic... Which, given that the entire point of the "home-made video" filming style is to suggest realism, make it more disappointing. Even if you find the concept creepy (which I do, when it's done right), it was just boring.

Thankfully at the moment at least book forums seem unaffected ...

I guess I'm an old-school, "tell don't show" type guy when it comes to horror.

As I THINK Vincent Price once said...paraphrasing here: "The horrors my mind can conjure up are far more frightening than anything the screen can show me". In this case, something like an empty house where a ouja board suddenly lights on fire is REALLY scary to me.

Something like THE EXORCIST, which people always tell me is SO scary...bores the crap out of me. I can't understand how anyone could be scared by that.

Horror really does seem to be as subjective as it gets from person to person as I know a good solid number of folk who agree with Loki and Matador's dislike of the PA film (this includes about half the people I initially watched it with). For me...I was freaked out.

I liked PA a lot too. Not like an A+ or anything, but I'd give it a solid B, and it did scare me in parts. Coulda helped that I was alone, on a very stormy night, in somebody else's house. But I liked the second one a fair amount too, in different conditions. Nothing about the performances rang false to me in either of them, though it's true not every idea the filmmakers had was successful or scary. But it ultimately hit me on the same level of fear as, say, a home invasion robbery (which I have something of a preoccupation with already for some reason).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I don't know what my specific taste in horror could be called, but I can tell you I despise gore horrors like Saw, and they're not frightening at all to me. The Strangers scared the crap out of me.

On topic, I'm SO TIRED and it's making me work slowly.

I find myself in a bewilderment, a most perplexing one. About three weeks back I accepted an invite to go to my friend's school formal, an extremely flattering offer if there ever was one. This takes place on the 17th of February. During all this time, however, another friend of mine, one of my best friends in fact, was planning her 18th birthday. It was all she talked about, and it happens that the much-anticipated event also falls on the 17th of February.

I am honestly torn. Which one do I go to? Going to both is impossible, and I don't want to disappoint either of them. Looks like I'm going to have to. Too much of a good thing, eh?

Simple - go to formal. Leave mid-way through. Go to birthday party dressed in formal outfit (with change of clothes in the trunk of car).
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

You accepted an invitation to a formal event, done deal. Apologise to 18th birthday girl but what's done is done.

Excuse youreself after the formal itself and get to the 18th, although by then being full of 18 year olds they probably passed out after their 2nd beer hours ago ... :p

I would suggest you also get yourself a wall planner, or use your touchphone calendar function (they're not just for internet and music you know :p).

I must say I'm a little annoyed by this modern notion of "provisional acceptance" ie people will accept whatever invitations without checking their calendars - and considering how many people worship their touchphones means they have no excuse - but only until something better comes along. Check your dates and only accept an invitation if you mean it. If something better comes up after your initial acceptance ... tough. An acceptance to a formal event is you having given your word. It's up to you if keeping it means anything to you.
