We have pet insurance if that's similar. It covers about 4000 in costs per year. Can't see this visit being more than 300 but you never know. Just waiting for the vet to ring us now.

That moment when someone's pet has more coverage than my university gives me.
Do I get sad or offended here?

Just sad.

Vet just rang. He's going for an ultrasound and radiograph. He's been having episodes where he spaces out and becomes unresponsive to stimuli and passing a little blood in his pee.

Call me a pessimist but I'm gearing up for the worst here.

From my experience, cats are really resistant to sickness. I used to have a rescue cat that I took to the vet after both her eyes had been blinded by an infection and she couldn't even move any more. She was fine after a couple of weeks.

Re: Heart murmur. My cat has had a heart murmur since I adopted her as a kitten at the humane society. She's 12 years old now and it's never been an issue...so hopefully not to worry on that front.

Hopefully he will be on the mend soon. Pets are family.

We're looking into a specialist just now. Options are exploratory surgery, steroids and option 3 (THAT one that no pet owner wants to consider). Issues being specialist, can we afford it? Steroids will provide a delay. It's really not looking good.

We saw him for a bit earlier. It broke me to see him rigged up to a drip, hobbling about and out of it. But he was affectionate and wanted fuss and cuddles.

Condolences to QT and his other half.

Also to Maark-losing pets is hard.

Not gonna gripe about work now, it seems inconsequential in comparison.

EDIT: EM, if you're really hung up on being socially awkward, try looking into sales/fundraising jobs. Pay's generally crap (esp. Commission-based jobs), but you can get a major crash course in handling yourself in social situations, because success on the job is literally all about being able to make people like you.

I did an 8-month stint at a job like that b/w Uni and law school. I can honestly say, it made a HUGE impact on my ability to carry myself. Doesn't mean I've become some incredible "social star", but enough to be considered "normal", with the acquired knowledge being there for those situations where you absolutely HAVE to make an impression.

1. How everyone (in my RL) expects me to always do everything on my own and at the same time thinks it's their god-given right to force their opinion on me, and beware should I not listen. This includes, but is not limited to, my dear mother.

2. A longer story. I teach the granddaughter of a friend of my mom's German, as they moved here only some months ago. I also help them with paperwork and stuff. That's fine. I did not ask for that particular kind of work, but oh well. Now, it seems like the girl is being bullied at school and wants to transfer to another school. The former sucks, so it's not like I don't want to help. Except that other than giving me a note with a lonely phone number I'm not getting any help from either the girl's parents or grandparents (in fact, I have never met her parents, and I've been teaching her for a couple of months now). I called the number they'd given me, but it turned out - unsurprisingly - that I needed such information as what school she is currently attending, which year she's in, etc. In fact, I do not even know which school she wants to transfer to, I had to call blindly. Additionally, she currently attends a type of school at which she'd need exceptionally good grades to transfer to the type of school she wants to go to (German school system, hell yeah). But without sufficient knowledge of the language she cannot participate or even write tests, so they're apparently thinking of keeping her back for a year.

So, I've been telling them for a week now to write me down information like the names of the schools.. That's easy, right? They found out about the other school somehow, right?

Hey, maybe it's easy for other people to call blindly somewhere, without any information.. Maybe it's just me, but I can't believe it's so difficult to understand that I need some certain information in order to be able to explain the issue, or that I need that info also for a different reason, that reason being severe social anxiety. Calling anywhere unknown stresses me out really badly, but no matter how many times I try to explain it, it never sticks.

And all of that while I am expected to find a place to stay, a way to finance that, to also find work, to work at my mom's shop for free for her gracefully letting me stay here for a bit more until I find another place, and some other stuff?

And also, after completely ignoring me for six months, the social assistance office finally had the grace to send a letter.. At least they're going to help me with living costs somewhat. I'd be happy if it wasn't for my mother looking for ways to scam them or trying to plan what money I received away for nonsense like a driver's license. That's pretty much the last thing I need or want right now.

*sigh*

So tired of it all :bs:

Sorry to take up so much space in the thread again.

@Maark: Sorry to hear about your cat, losing pets can be hard :p

Puckstein, this thread is also your space to use in your unfortunately dramatic life as you like.

I share to some degree the struggle to step outside a family business, so there is some degree of me nodding my head, going "Yep, that happens to me too."

Keep on plugging away.

I think it's a cultural thing. In cultures where families are really close and support each other a lot, stepping out of the family domain is really difficult. I currently live with my mother (god bless her, she is one of the most reasonable people I know) and despite the fact that she is a pretty open minded person, She cannot for the life of her imagine me living on my own or leaving home until I'm married. (cultural thing, apparently if a guy lives alone without a wife/mother he will engage in depravities until dead)

So the family support thing has more good things than bad things when both parents and children are reasonable people, but when one of the involved parties has issues it doesn't work so well and getting out of it isn't so easy either; because of how much you depend on each other.

I do not envy your situation Puck, I have friends that have gone through similar things and it's incredibly difficult (Don't start smoking though, it's not worth it :bs: ). I hope you succeed in finding a place and moving out.

Noooooooo... don't say that, Puck! Ok, I, too could not see the point of a driving licence at the time but that was because I used to drive tractors and cars were just too boring by comparison! Taking your driving test is one of the most important things you can do to increase your personal freedom and personal choice. Tons of jobs require you to be able to drive. I know so many people, mostly women, who don't drive and I see how it stops them from doing a lot of things they would otherwise do. It also makes them very much depended on those family members who do drive. Then, when that person themselves falls ill and can't drive, they are stuck. Not a good situation to be in. It's ok if you are in the middle of a large city - but chances are you won't always be there - why limit your future options when instead you could expand them?!

As for the situation with those disorganised friends of your mothers - just look at it as training for dealing with that type of person in the future, be it client or fellow worker in the office or whoever. Believe me - nothing you do will change them - if you can accept that they are wired differently were common sense is concerned, you'll probably find dealing with them a bit easier.

Good luck with the translation stuff - being piggy in the middle is usually hard work both ways. Drueck Dir die Daumen!

Indeed. I think sometimes for people who have not grown up in such cultures it is difficult to understand. It's a kind of cultural and familial dependance. I only have my mom and my brother for family (though my father's family is still around, I've never had any closer connection to them), and my brother's far away and I haven't seen him in years. In Ukraine, people tend to live with the parents until marriage, so the expectation has always been that that's what I'd do as well.. Except I do not plan to marry, so the hope's kinf of wearing off. At the same time, since my brotehr stayed with our grandma and took care of her, I've always felt the implied expectation that I would stay with our mother. In theory, I am not against that, but not THAT close.

That's all great and understandable, but beside the point. If I could afford it, I'd gladly get a driver's license, but I cannot even finance myself right now, so a license is totally out of my league. My mother chews on my ears every time I have a little money about it, but that's because she wants to be driven around.

Anyway, thanks for everything else. I don't mind translating, been doing it for a while, I'm just miffed by the lack of cooperation in this particular case.

How much is a Drivers License? Regular one here is $30 for 6 yrs.

In Germany, it's something on the order of thousands of euros and 30 hours of class/road instruction as determined by the driving class instructor.

Huge undertaking for most people.

^This. I've never heard of anyone who got away with paying less than a thousand euros, and you have to take special lessons, take the test, get your sight tested, and participate in a first aid course. So, even if you're a natural driving talent, it's expensive. Most people try to get their parents to pay for it when they turn 18 (that's legally an adult over here, and a big deal), because paying it all on your own can be difficult.
