When we were doing coursework, she would assign us weekly readings and on the day of the lecture we would have to hand in a write up exactly 1 A4 page long, font 12, Times New Roman, and no margin shenanigans. She had us email it in. The course grade would be decided by the cumulative grade of all the write ups. After the first two or so lectures everybody had to start learning concise writing. It has helped me immensely

Vet came back to us. They didn't find tumours but it looks like renal failure. He has bladder stones, and fluid build up on the chest and abdomen. Prognosis is 'guarded'.

I suppose it's better than lymphoma at least but still. Being this powerless is maddening.

That sounds almost as scary as the old-school psych methods tutors. The faculty myth was that in the elder ages, to teach proper APA formatting they'd fold your title page in half... and if you didn't have the title line on one side of the crease and your name on the other, it was an auto-fail.

Not to mention the "not one word over 200" in the abstract...

Scary? Oh yeah it was really scary at the beginning. But the class itself was awesome. My supervisor stipulated that the write up could only contain critical opinion, no summaries of the text. Then in the class she asked us to share our opinions. We often got into spirited debates, while she smiled and mediated. Then at the end she would summarise, give her input and finish. By the forth paper I had gotten a hang of the thing, and by the end of 5 months I had seen my writing improve by an order of magnitude. I owe a lot to that course and the hard labour I put in
