This is messing with my groove to no end. Just thinking about the way Liverpool's playing now is giving me ulcers and pest boils. Hodgson might turn things around given a few more months, but the team will never be good enough to challenge for the title under him. And they'll never play Liverpool football under him. Even Rafa and Hullier was a better fit with the Liverpool way. I was sort of impressed with the signings he made this summer, but now I've fallen back on my old reservations for him as a manager.

In answer:

$7000 would cover the costs of the trip. That means airfares, hotel costs, food...I'm not quite sure. I need to find out more information. Extra spending money...I should be so lucky.

I talked it over with Dad. He is reluctant to let me use my own money, even though I said I don't give a rat's. He also says it will be detrimental to my education, despite the fact it's at the start of the year and only for 2/3 weeks. And of course, he's dragged out the whole "trying to support a family" excuse. He doesn't seem to comprehend the fact that not everybody is happy spending the rest of their lives in the same place. I honestly want to see the world.

@ AIJ - I'd try to be a bit more understanding/tolerant of your Dad. That's a lot of money to anyone, and considering how many Aussies and Kiwis make it to the UK, it's a strong likelihood that you'll be able to get to Europe yourself pretty soon. When you are finished school you could do your O.E. before Uni. I think that taking a break between school and uni is a good thing too as it gives you a chance to experience the world a bit and make a more informed choice about your further education (if that's the route you want to go).

Ask your father if he'd be willing to help you out a bit financially with that instead?
On a round the world trip as part of an O.E you can see places like South America (which is AWESOME) and South East Asia on the cheap, and get work in the UK to allow you to see the rest of Europe. How much longer in school do you have?

I have been to Oz twice, I paid for both trips myself. I am going again late this month. I have been saving all year, my brother emigrated out there 7 months ago so I will look forward to seeing him. The point is, I paid for it myself. I don't see why you're complaining, get yourself a part time job, stay in all the time and just save the money you earn. I take it you still live with your parents? So you don't have to pay rent, or food or anything really? You can achieve your goal yourself if you work hard enough!

Well, Tat, it does depend on your location. It'd take me about 18 months (working a full time job) of saving ALL of my salary and not spending anything or anything, to pay for that trip. I suppose civilized countries are a bit softer on that, though...

$7000 seems fairly steep for a 2/3 week trip...the Europe trips my school organised were a lot cheaper. But go with a couple of mates when you've finished school, it'll be a funner experience and you'll appreciate it more if it comes out of your own wallet. Besides, you can't really experience Europe when you're underage.

My entire 3 week trip to Europe last year cost about $7000, and I lived pretty well for all of it, crashing at friends places for only 5 nights. I was eating mostly fast food or having restaurant meals (aside from the awesome spread Hetan and Mal put on ). Plus all the airfares during that period (quite a few) were bought at last minute rates (except the great deal I got from Singapore Airlines), so I got some good deals, and some not so good. Same with hotels and the car rental in Ireland. I may have had (quite) a few drinkies as well.

How the hell can a bulk tour for kids which is ordered well beforehand cost anywhere NEAR what I paid?

That's the best point so far, AIJ! Travelling is better when you can experience all of it without nagging teachers on your back and without school work to be done. Coming to Europe when you can't have a beer is a total waste of time and money Save your own cash for later on, you won't regret it in the long run. My folks were pretty cool about giving me money growing up but that is A LOT of cash, especially if you have younger siblings who will one day try the "But you gave that much to AIJ" line! The best time to travel is uni age and upwards.

OK, look, if I came across as some whiny teen brat then that's not the case at all. They have plenty good reasons for not letting me go. I understand they can't just fork out that kind of money. They aren't being obtuse for the sake of being obtuse. What they are doing is being rational.

But so many of my friends have already travelled around the world, and I haven't set one foot off this continent. We are a big family so it's not that easy, but I'm getting so frustrated. I plan to travel when school is done, whether I go this time or not.

I would gladly help pay for it if I had to. But they're refusing my money. Although I will probably need that money later on...

If I don't go, then of course I'll be annoyed. But at least the reasons will be...well, reasonable.

Should start looking into a part-time job, methinks.

AIJ - many people don't ever get to travel overseas in their life, let alone when they are still in school. I never went on the overseas trips that my school offered, and it didn't change much in the long run. Whilst it mught suck right now, in a month/year it wont seem like nearly as big deal

I also question how it is $7000... our school trips were much cheaper and one was for 4 or 5 weeks! You'll be able to travel much cheaper than that after school when you can plan thigns yourself
