I'm going for something along the lines of "I would like to experience research in an environment that is effectively time managed and goal orientated". In other words, not full of lazy arsed boffins who couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.
Also, does anyone know if the plural of consortium should be consortiums or consortia? The internet says it can be either but which looks better?

Dear Pimp,
I've been an academic for most of my career now, and there have been some excellent times and experiences. Situations do change however.
As it stands I find my current academic bend to be a bit limiting. While I may have more room in terms of proposing personal projects (I'm not at all sure of that) the lack of a proper budget for state of the art equipment and lab resources give me a feeling of being held back from truly achieving good and complete work.
This leads to one of my other desires. That of accomplishment. I want to finish a project that will have tangible and practical results and not just theoretical papers. This experience is sorely lacking in the academic world, often leading to stagnated or outdated methods and ideas. I need a different perspective that the pharmaceutical industry can provide.
Not only would I have access to better equipment and labs, as well as a new viewpoint to help me approach my line of interest differently, this career path would not sever me completely from the academic world. I can still attend conferences and correspond with my counter parts to offer an outside view point and they can do the same for me. Whenever this career path comes to an end I can always return to the academic world with a better experience and greater appreciation of having worked "in the field" so to speak.
I hope you have found this enlightening.

I missed three days of lecture (impromptu family vacation), and now I am far, FAR beyond boned for my quantum class. I can't put into words how unbelievably lost I am. I'm fairly certain I've got a snowballs chance in Kurald Thyrllan here...

The thumb I busted a few weeks ago still hurts... and it keeps getting worse. I can't see a physical difference between it and the other, healthy one. There's no bruises or deformities, it's most likely not out of it's socket or anything...
But it doesn't channel it's full strength. At one point I just can't put more force through it. It's not even strong enough to turn a lighter on. I'm getting really, really worried. Could some tendons get stretched? Could the fact that I keep using it in the usual manner all the time hinder it's healing? Should I go see a doctor?

You can permanently damage your fingers if you don't let the finger rest or support it with a brace within a certain time frame. My brother narrowly avoided having the top joint of his pointer finger be permanently unable to straighten because he thought it was a jammed finger. Go see a doctor. Having the peace of mind regarding something as important as a thumb is worth the bill.

Plus 1 to this, go and get it looked at. I've played rugby for a long time and I've had more broken fingers and dislocated knuckles than I can count and the ones I've not had sorted are all lumpy and bent and the joints hurt a lot, they'll only get worse too.

Oh Manitoba is getting better and better by the second. I just looked at the front of today's paper and what's the headline but "Manitoba Faces Significant flood risk." Just great! It's bound to be a massive flood as last year for the worst flood in our history they refused to even admit there would be flooding. For the government to be talking flooding in February can't be a good sign. They're saying as of right now it's goign to be one to three feet lower than last year, and that's if the weather co-operates. I really do need to move!

Winter-lite would be between -5 and -1.
The second it's over zero then it's no longer freezing and thus no longer winter. Even worse when it seems to be stretching out for more than a week according to the forecast.
And it's going to rain...
God I hate rain. Grey and miserable.
This should still be snow.
If we could switch the weather patterns I'd do it.
Any day.
Rather -30 than +2 of grey wet slush and rain.
The second it's over zero then it's no longer freezing and thus no longer winter. Even worse when it seems to be stretching out for more than a week according to the forecast.

Just teasing you, but I do agree that the wet, slushy dirty stuff is no fun. It's part of the reason I hate the first few weeks of spring. I'm beginning to think I'm just not a fan of weather in general.
