Anyway, guys, the whole house situation just got even worse. So, there was supposed to come an "architect" over today to measure all the units. I mean, alright, it's the news owner's right, all good. BUT holy shit, it's a good thing we were home BEFORE the appointed time, because this asshole seriously tried to THROW AWAY THE THINGS we keep in the attic, which as I mentioned in my previous post, is allotted to us as extra storage space in our lease agreement. Now, we did get a letter last week from this asshole stating we had to vacate the attic space by September 30th because it's a fire hazard, yadda yadda. Apparently everyone in the house got one and he seriously plans to vacate both the attic and the basement then reassign the basement compartments. Meh, whatever. We didn't really need most of the stuff we kept in the attic with the exception of the odd small furniture piece, some books I'm in the process of selling off second hand on Ebay and two mattresses we kept behind a closed door. Otherwise there's a lot, and I do mean a lot, of junk that's collected there over the years prior to when we moved in, stuff like old doors that were replaced throughout the house and such. Annoying but whatever. ANYWAY, we hear noise up tehre and go take a look and lo and behold, this bastard has people up there removing EVERYTHING from the attic, including the stuff in our closed off (but not locked) compartment. HELLO?! He then proceeds to SHOUT at us for not having removed all that junk yet. HELLOOO?! 1. not our junk and 2. it's two weeks yet until the deadline and we've already asked people over for NEXT WEEK to help us move the stuff down and for people from the city waste management to come and pick it up, WHICH COSTS US MONEY. So he keeps shouting at us that he's going to make the whole house pay for the clean up (of stuff none of the current tenants put there) and also that we'd better remember the "architect" appointment. I wave his stupid letter in his face and shout back, because why not, and also because he ignores me unless I do.
So then lunchtime rolls around and a pair of 20-year-old-at-best interns ring and claim to be the "architects" come to measure our apartment. I quickly put on a mask before my mouth runs faster than my brain again and make them do the same because fuck knows where they've been partying lately. Anyway, they do their round through the apartment while I try to get some work done but I can hear them get more and more exasperated with every room, because guess what? The house is 100+ years old and IT SHOWS. There'S not a single 90° corner, the ceiling is sacking in the living room, the floor is creaking everywhere, most rooms have slanted walls and no two windows are the same size. I can hear them mumble something about this not going to work. NO SHIT, SHERLOCK. They must've told the landlord because he came whirling back up here and made an even bigger fuss about the trash in the attic and how he's going to have everything removed from the attic and the basement, lock the door to the attic and make the entire house pay for all of this. So yeah, half of the stuff we kept up there is now GONE. I'm mostly pissed about the mattresses though to be fair, they've been up there close to a year and are probably too dusty now to use anyway.
Anyway, about an hour later, our neighbour from the second floor comes up asking if the "architect" had been here. Yeah, kinda. Well, apparently, ours was the only apartment they measured and also tried to at the resident cat lady's place from the same floor but she elected to either ignore them or be conspicuously absent. Anyway, we gossip some and get told that the rooms on the ground floor were supposed to be renovated for a restaurant (of which there have been three in there already in the past ten years or so, none of which survived for long, so obviously it's a prime location for one) and also that everyone in the house suspects that this guy had planned to do the currently popular pastime among landlords of buying an old house, raising the rents until everyone moves out, renovating the entire thing and re-renting it for a much heftier price but bought the whole thing sight unseen and is now really, REALLY pissed about it because it's hella expensive to make this thing livable unless you do what the previous owner did: low rents and leave the tenants alone. And he legally cannot tear the whole shabang down because it's protected by monument conservation laws.
Have I already mentioned that none of our door bells have been working properly since March?
I hope he suffocates on his arrogance and greed and I'm not usually one to wish bad things on people.
