You ever listen to Amon? That's me after I do as you're suggesting. Fuck me sideways with a pneumatic drill but that hurts.

Yeah I get that but - and I don't know what this says about me - I actually quite like that particular pain!!

It's a cleansing kinda pain.

Corsodil is the best though and hurts less but can leave quite a tangy taste in the mouth for hours.

You guys really enjoy the brutal punishment, huh?

About a year and a half ago I was fraking about becuase my PhD project was not working, my supervisor was no longer on my side and I was worried about dropping out. I managed to get a new project and supervisor a year ago and things were going well. However they want me to leave the lab and start writing up. Meaning my new PHD has only existed for a year and 2 months, you normally get three years. I have data, I have results. I am just feeling so nervous. Do I have enough? Is it novel enough, is it enough data etc. My supervisor says I do but I cant help feeling anxious. I worked really hard this last year and I will be so dissapointed if it was all for nothing because in the end its being rushed.

Pulled smth in my right shoulder last night. Figured I'd do some diamond pushups before heading off for a swim, but didn't stretch first.

Doesn't seem to be anything really bad- only getting the pain when it's in certain positions, and not when it's at rest or when i'm typing (thankfully). I was able to swim just fine with it.

Mostly i'm just annoyed at myself for such an amateur mistake (not stretching)

If there is one thing I wish I knew about my PhD before I started it's this: A PhD is not really about what you discover, whether it's novel or how much you've published, it's about the journey and what you've learned along the way. I'm sure that you are much better equipped to handle research after your journey, your two years failing on your other project were all about getting you into the right frame of mind and knowledge to tackle the new project. 90% of the important results in my thesis are from a 6 month period at the end of my PhD, and most of my colleagues would say the same. Trust your supervisor, it looks bad for them if a student fails, if they say you are ready you are.

Well done in getting out from under a toxic supervisor to a new better one (so many people don't). And good luck in the writing up phase!

The strange ways the human mind works. It has been almost a year since my grandmother passed away. I have more or less gotten used to it.

Then, suddenly today I am just sitting at the table cutting a watermelon and I remember how she used to sit opposite me to make sure I did it properly. Over the last two years I made sure to slice it thin to make it easier for her.

Memories..

Be careful that it isn't a Rotator Cuff injury - those get nasty. I'd advise rest for a few days, if it doesn't hurt, train light for a week, and then see how you go from there.

I'm struggling to figure out what I want to do after uni, and it feels like the longer I take to decide the more options are closing off to me. It feels like such a major decision that could shape my future in vastly different ways, but I can't figure out how to really approach it in a meaningful fashion so it feels like I'm going to end up choosing almost arbitrarily.

I know in the long run it's probably not actually like that, and that it's a common situation for people to find themselves in. But telling myself that isn't really helping much. Blahhhh.

Don't want to alarm you but I damaged my shoulder over ten years ago - and it hasn't been right since. Also hurts only when it is in certain positions. If it persists, get it checked out before it gets chronic.

Agree. Chronic stuff is the worst. I had a similar issue with my TFL...which now acts up ALL the time, and only working it out with exercises designed to work it out will help. It's irritating.

I have always envied people who know exactly what they want to do professionally. I never did so I know exactly the kind of frustration you are experiencing. Because you are not set on anything specific, the field of choice is pretty much unlimited and becomes difficult to see any individual one.

Maybe you could limit the field a bit first before deciding arbitrarily... Think about where you want to be geographically for example. Look at everything you have ever done and ask yourself what you really enjoyed doing. Theory vs practical, creation vs destruction, how highly do salary and career advancement count... those type of questions? If you can make a list of which of the answers you would like your perfect job to tick - you might be able to eliminate at least half the field!

Good luck!

You guys says the nicest things, lol.
I work with chronic injury patients all the time (i'm their lawyer), so i'm always ultra-paranoid about developing any type of chronic pain.
I'll get it checked, obv, if it's still not normal in about a week. But after most of the day today spent typing and scrolling it seems to be settling down already.

Now I have a new thing annoying me: my work PC (win 7) picked up the annoying "get Windows 10" update, and I don't have the permissions to eradicate it with extreme prejudice.

It's totally normal to be confused/ lost about career choices. 2 things I can suggest.

1) make a list of things you absolutely refuse to do. It may seem counterproductive, but while you're thinking of those, you will start to realize what it is you want to do.

2) try stuff. If your parents aren't kicking you out to survive on your own, look for any companies/firms/institutions doing things you're interested in, and show up there with your resume declaring you're willing to work even unpaid to get a taste of what their work is like.
In many cases, paid jobs are almost nothing like the stuff they teach in uni, so practical hands on experience is awesome asset no matter how you get it. Also, this allows you to start networking/building connections, etc.
