'Starlight Could Really Be a Vast Alien Quantum Internet, Physicist Proposes
What if the universe is a giant alien chatroom, and we just can't understand it?
[...] "What I show is that alien civilizations can, in principle, run their own quantum internet in such a way that to the creatures excluded from the conversation (us!) we will only ever see thermal electromagnetic radiation,[...] All we would see, if they did use the effect I propose, is some very random looking thermal light."
[...]
Rudolph said the idea for the paper on aliens communicating with quantum starlight flowed from his work on quantum computers. Unlike the quantum computers being pursued by the likes of Google or Intel that use superconducting circuits or trapped ions at incredibly cold temperatures to create qubits (the quantum equivalent of a computer bit), photonic computers use light to accomplish the same thing. While Rudolph says this kind of quantum design is unconventional, it does also have advantages over its rival—including being able to operate at room temperature and easy integration into existing fiber optic infrastructure.
"It was while I was stuck trying to deeply understand one of those advantages that I decided to push my analysis to an extreme limit, a limit which I thought would end up being ridiculous and would definitely not work,[...] Instead I found things still worked, and the end result was the realization that certain incredibly simple photonic quantum effects are in principle usable by circumspect aliens (or humans!) for the quantum internet."
[...]
Aliens aside, Rudolph says that his paper demonstrates that building a photon-based quantum internet here on Earth might be "much easier than we expected."
[...]
"A distinct but important point is that even if your adversary can intercept and listen in on your communication, the quantum internet is provably securable,"'

Stopped at a red light and a few cars over was a teenage girl in full goth makeup and goth style regalia. Black lipstick, eye shadow, etc. She even leaned in extra hard and did what I call "goth clown" look by adding some accentuating makeup below her eyes. And she had the Wednesday Addams fashion going. The window was down and she was doing that goth thing were she had her head propped/resting on her arms and was looking forlornly out the window.
Now I don't have any sentimentality towards the goth lifestyle, I didn't know it was still a thing, but I was happy for it instead of some coal rolling Stop the Steal, Trump is my President, Back the Blue giant American flag waving truck nuts moron.

Oh snap, we edged out China for most golds (by one, ha! US Women's volleyball for the F to the T to the muthafukin' W to get that last gold!). That was kind of a surprise. We didn't make the greatest showing in events we normally dominate.
You guys think it will be the same story for the Winter Olympics in about six months? Those are being held in Beijing so I'm guessing China is going to have a windfall of gold.

Book 2 is VERY close to ready for publishing. I'm currently doing last formatting edits, then it goes on the iPad and kindle app to ensure it reads correctly... Then I suppose artwork!

Sure it's all Tehol and Bugg now, but you'll be screeching Quick Ben and Kalam in a few years.

Congrats Tiste!
In other news, we just bought a car! The first car that I own myself, or we own but you get the idea. A Kia E-niro, and it'll be great to finally have that flexibility.

Sold my apartment with a slight profit instead of a loss. And I only have an overlap of a weekend before the new owner moves in so no double living costs either.

'researchers from DTU have now realized the complete platform for an optical quantum computer. [...]
Optical quantum computers have long been overshadowed by superconducting technologies that have been accelerated by huge development programs run at tech giants like IBM and Google. [...]
The potential of the quantum computer is enormous, and its dramatically increased processing power relative to standard transistor-based computers will enable disruptive innovation in a wide range of areas of great importance to Denmark, such as the pharmaceutical industry, optimization of the transport sector, and development of materials for carbon capture and storage.
A crucial factor in fulfilling this potential is that the quantum computer is realized on a platform that is scalable to thousands of qubits
"Theoretically, there's no difference between whether a quantum computer is based on superconducting or optical qubits. But there's a decisive practical difference. Superconducting quantum computers are limited to the number of qubits fabricated on the specific processor chip. In our system, we're constantly creating new ones and entangling them quantum mechanically with those we are performing calculations on. This means that our platform is easily scalable."
"In addition, we don't need to cool everything down in large cryostats. Instead, we can do it all at room temperature in optical fibers. The fact that the system is based on optical fibers also means that it can be connected directly to a future quantum Internet, without difficult intermediaries."'
