Geek update: Newly discovered comet Neowise has survived a trip around the sun and is now unexpectedly putting on a great light show the rest of the month. Will be closest to Earth 7/22 and is visible now with the naked eye.

I saw Neowise last night. It was perfectly centre in the sky above the roof of the house at the end of our garden. I don't have binoculars but could see it with the naked eye and there was not a cloud in the sky for once in this stupid country. Absolutely shattered now after staying up until 11.30pm for it to be dark enough to see. My weeknight bedtime is usually before 10. I am old and pathetic. It was the first interesting celestial thing I have seen in decades due to either living in cities with too much light pollution or classic British cloud. Loved it although being out in my garden alone in the dark reaffirms that I am still vaguely scared of the dark at the ripe old age of 40. I just reflexively think of every scary thing I ever saw or thought and then tell myself it's waiting for me in the dark. It's pathetic really.
