Athletes are not heroes. They can be role models, but never heroes. Real heroes risk their lives, without hesitation. Like this guy:

I can't help but think but for that one act of insane bravery he could be just like so many others, hiding out, hoping to stay out of notice etc.
You can argue for or against an act of bravery having amazing benefits, but I like to think maybe it's that whole karma thing. Even if I'm not sure it exists, I'd like to think maybe it does.
