When you start a job its usually around 2 weeks paid vacation. It goes up the longer you work there.

SB is correct. At my employer you get two weeks paid vacation to start and then accrue another week after four years. If you work long enough to make it ten years, you have a paid sabbatical, which is one month. And if you don't take it in the year you become eligible, you lose it, so those who are coming up on ten years need to plan.

Aside from the vacation time, we also get ten paid holidays. I think the word holiday means something different outside of America, but here it means we get the following days off, with pay:

- New Year's Day
- President's Day
- Spring Day (or Good Friday, but have to call it Spring Day so as not to offend non Christians)
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day (4th of July)
- Labor Day (which here in the US is first Monday of September)
- Thanksgiving Day
- Day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday)
- Christmas Eve
- Christmas Day

This is at my specific employer and varies depending on who you work for (for ex. might get MLK Jr. Day off instead of Pres. Day), but most professionals get these paid days off.

Thing is, at my employer, the majority of employees are maxed out on their vacation hours and a corporate memo usually is sent out around Christmas time that all employees who have accrued max vacation hours need to use vacation time. People like having as many accrued vacation hours as possible because during one of the routine RIF actions, their severance package includes unused vacation pay. Also, it's a sad commentary on the culture of the U.S. but a lot of people just don't like having that many days off work. I personally always use my vacation hours, even if it means I just take a Friday/Monday off for a long 4 day weekend (usually to devote time to a new engrossing video game XD)

I get 15 days of paid "vacation" a year- which is significantly better than most entry-level jobs where people get 10, and have to work their way up to 15 through a few years.

We also get stat holidays, 2 "religious holidays" of our choice and 5 (I think) paid sick days. I virtually never use my sick day, b/c I usually schedule whatever appointment I need 1st thing in the morning, then go straight to work and work a few extra hours to make it up. The only legit "sick day" I took in my 3.5 years was when I dislocated my elbow Thursday night and got back from the hospital in a cast at 8 AM in the morning. I called work that day and told them I'd be in on Monday.
