I'm on a re-read, and I have my own stupid questions:

2. What about the T'lan Imass in the mine? He gets new legs, seems to have some purpose, then gets trapped by the Azath. We lose precisely nothing if that character is left out. Once is while economy is a virtue.

I for one thought it was one of the funniest passages of the book and totally not predictable!

Stupid Question.

After all the speculation, theories and shots in the dark regarding the "army of assasins" in the Azath, how or by whom was Vorcan and Nom suddenly woken up out of the blue? I think it is safe to assume that Raest did not simply decide to lay the boot in randomly as a result of acute boredom. And as Baruk left a littly overweight flying toad as a lookout to see when, and if, somone would exit the house, I don't think that the remnants of the cabal is responsible either.

Azaths may be famous for many things, but the ease of exiting them is not one of them. So how did our murdering duo get back in action? Why was Vorcan first? And can we assume the same happened to Kalam on the other side of the world?

prime suspect: gothos, he seems to be able to travel between azaths freely, and was in the area at that time. plus he dislikes raest, thus raest didnt see him wake vorcan.

otherwise i'd say that vorcan just woke up, she is an ascendant and i doubt an enchanted sleep would keep her down long. rallick woke up cuz raest kicked him, no other explanation

I don't remember reading Vorcan is an ascendant. In TtH it does say she is a demon, so made sense for Baruk to send his little demon to watch for her to wake up. Maybe the powers converging on the city woke her up?

And that begs the question. "Why did Raest kick him"?

Forgive me please....I may be a complete idiot, but, am at around page 500, but I still do not get the part where Nimander goes to the barrow with Kedeviss and she recogizes Bellurdan, Nightchill, Hairlock? (part with the millions of dolls). I get the feeling that Bellurdan is the "dying God" ????? Would someone please explain that whole thing to me, I just don't get it....

It makes more sense on a second read (like so much!)

When Bellurdan embraced Tattersail in GotM; their bodies were consumed by fire. Tattersail escaped, however, by transferring her soul into the body of Nightchill as a last resort. Due to the preservation spell laid on it to prevent its decay, (by 'Sail) this still held fragments of Nightchill's soul.

The 'merged' souls animated Nightchills corpse. As this occurred within the influence of Tellann, (due to Tools proximity) these souls were rescued and tranferred into an unborn infant; this was born as Silverfox.

So where was Bellurdan? He was a mage too, but he was not traced when Silverfox was examined later. Nightchill and Tattersail were there, but no Bellurdan. In answer to your question... here he is!

Forced out of Nightchills body by the other stronger souls, no doubt. He had met Hairlock in the Abyss, and thought he would try to animate a puppet in the same way, which is where Nimander finds him - trying to get some form back. I think in Gotm, the soul transferrance is said to be very rare and difficult to do - hairlock managed it with the help of QB, who obviously knows a bit about that!

If you've finished the book, it also explains later how Aranatha recognizes him, or at least knows his identity at this point.

Hope that helps.

To be honest you shouldn't really spend time in this sub-forum until you finished the book :Rodeo:

I agree... but I've been in trouble before for posting info about tth, in this sub-forum, so I try to err on the side of caution!

Ok, here are my stupid questions and an observation:

What did Baruk do to help exactly? Other than dispatch a demon to watch the gate and to chauffeur Brood in a carraige that is...

Second, can anyone point me in the direction of a thread that surmises what the heck Gothos is up to?

And finally... This isn't a question, but an observation. Kallor became a much more interesting character through this book, to the point where I want to see more of him.

However, Nimander is a piss-poor Rake successor. I found any scene with Nimander to be absolutely tedious* and couldn't wait for the story to cut away to somewhere else.

*except for the scene with Gothos, but that's because it was Gothos!

I was just about to start a new thread, but figured I'd ask about this here first.

We learned that Draconus used Brood's hammer to forge Dragnipur (I'll leave the implications of that for later). We also saw that Brood destroyed Dragnipur with the same hammer.

In MoI, there's a quote somewhere of Brood saying that (a) he is Tennes, and (:) he's been holding this "burden" for 1200 years.

If the burden is the hammer, which is Burn's power all wrapped up, how did Draconus use it to make Dragnipur (which was at least started 120,000 years ago, or so)?

Maybe Brood wasn't the original owner of the hammer? Maybe the hammer and Dragnipur have a lot in common?

My impression was that SE was showing how Rake 'thought' through Nimander. He did not give us a Rake POV as that would take away the aura he built up for that character. Nimander is full of doubts, and presumably, Rake is too, or at least, was when he started out in Kharkanas.

Why is the Seguleh 2nd (deceased) so angry with Skinner? I'm guessing it happened in a previous book but I've missed it.

Cheers

No one knows...there might be something in RotCG...but there is some speculation that skinner was the one who killed The second, that should piss him off...no? And he wants to get revenge, or just his rank back.
then again that could be too obvious, i reckon there is something more that will be revealed later on.

What ever the reason is, it seemed to interfere with Hood's plans and so he made the Second forget it... We've already seen how Hood can't make someone fully forget their death though, and in tBH the Second called Skinner "damned cheater of death" so its possible that Skinner was supposed to die, the Second was supposed to come and harvest his soul or whatever(as its said in one or two books that Hood doesnt usually do that himself, and in GotM he had someone else come to meet Paran and the Twins, so why not the Soldier/Knight?)
Anyway, perhaps Skinner wounded him in some way. Maybe the Second was the Knight before Dassem, and got relegated to the position of Soldier by his failure or something?
Just a crazy theory.

Concerning Kallor, one must not forget that the very curse three (or was it four?) elder gods placed upon him prevents him from actually dying.

Therefore, it should come to no suprise that whoever tries to kill Kallor meets with failure. Some of it is due to Kallor's own skill, no doubt, but I am confident the curse plays a part in it (WJ's broken leg is a good example of a random event preventing his demise).

Of course, this means Kallor gets to win some fights (assuming no one just decides to do a Brys Beddict on him), but overall the end result remains that Kallor remains bound by his curse.

The interesting part is that he seems to have embraced his curse, and now wishes to bring destruction to everything. The caveat being that, if destroying civilisation is his new goal, then he is cursed to fail in that as well. Hopefully it won't be because Karsa beat him to it. :D

In any case, I loved this book. Especially glad that he tied up many loose ends from MoI (not the least of which is the Redeemer plotline... quite poignant and unexpected).

Thank you.

Actually, Whiskeyjack's broken leg was Hood taking revenge for Whiskeyjack and co stealing Dunsparrow from him, I do believe.

Yeah... Hood's fault completely. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Mallet had got round to fixing his leg - it always looked like he would have got Kallor, but even if he had,

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.
