I always laugh when I see this show as its shot in a really well known fake built town in a farmers field in Pickering (You'll notice it looks just like The Umbrella Academy town...) that's about a 15min drive from Toronto proper...knowing that always makes me giggle.

Shrinking season 3 was top freaking notch. Probably my favorite show right now.

Old grumpy Harris Ford is best Harrison Ford.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

Just Finished REACHER S1... pleasantly surprised. The cast really sold what could have been a dull by-the-numbers run.

Honestly, QT, I'm surprised you didn't go for the Unreal Tournament: Xan episode. It would seem to me that it's something right up your alley.

I'd also highlight the Pac-Man episode as a fresh, very fresh, and new take on Pac-Man.

I have yet to see the new half of episodes, so at the moment I would agree that And They Shall Know No Fear is the best episode of the lot.

Crossfire could have been good, but it just seemed a bit too on the nose. Armored Core was fine and Sifu was good, but not really my style. The D&D episode was also good, but I felt that it went from serious stakes to world-ending serious stakes in the blink of an eye.

I agree the Pacman episode was pretty good, I loved making him into this cloaked nomad...that worked well....but again too damned dark. Same for the D&D ep.

Also I didn't realize the new eps dropped for the back half. Will have to check them out.

I've watched the DnD, Unreal, Sifu eps so far.
DnD was... ok. The characters' faces were under-animated in contrast w their armour, weapons, etc which detracted from the action for me. The story was fine enough but - likely for the same reason - i didn't really buy the motives... the paladin wanting to save the kid, the kid wanting to save everyone he just stabbed/met, the suspicious halfling mage... and the druid and whatever the dwarf was supposed to be were utterly background.

Unreal... i couldn't quite get over the massive gaping extinction event asteroid sized plot holes, but the actual action was a lot of fun and well animated.

Sifu... k i liked the hook, and the style was fine and the fights - what we saw - were good enough but everything felt liked they stopped short of going all in. Just a hint of the 'they killed my father', near zero explanation of the ressurrections, and we're done, cue dumplings. It doesn't leave me wanting to play the game or see more of the cartoon.

Love/Sex/Robots eats this anthology for lunch, but i will watch the rest if only for the pretty piccies

The Pac-Man ep was clever, and well animated. Also moved along nicely.

Crossfire, i'm not going to praise the depth or complexity but damn that was some impressive animation/action.

WH40k was actually excellent. One of those rare pieces that shows what that IP can be when someone puts more thought into it than 'how many characters can i explode in six minutes'.

The Expanse is leaving Amazon Prime, which is currently the only place to stream it afaik:

Quote

It's recently started being listed under the streaming service's "Titles expiring in the next 30 days" list, and is expected to leave at the beginning of February.

This is true in the US and UK, and presumably other regions too. We're not sure whether Amazon is removing all six seasons, or just the ones it didn't create, but the streaming service would presumably make some reference if the latter was true.

That's a curious move given that The Expanse is an Original production for Amazon. It's possible that it's licensing it out to another streaming service, so there will still be some way to watch it online, but the other option is that its deal with Syfy means that it'll be taking it offline.

One of the best sci-fi series of all time is about to be pulled from streaming

... but it's also available on DVD.

Wonder if they might make more money selling DVDs than they do from streaming... and then once they've largely saturated the existing market they could add it back to streaming. (And/or into an AI-generated... expansion into virtual (and/or augmented) reality.) Doubt that's what they're doing though.

It's been a few weeks but I forgot to mention I watched Batman: Caped Crusader, the new Bruce Timm series. I thought it was pretty great. It's in many ways very much in the style of TAS, just in a completely alt-world version of Gotham. Once you get over the dissonance between the very strong similarities to TAS and the otherwise sweeping changes that make this show unique from both TAS and any other film/TV iteration of Gotham, there's a lot of great work here. Very impressed by Hamish Linklater as Bruce/Bats, who's written a lot more overtly on the edge (i.e. less sane) here. My biggest complaint is that it's such a short season that you don't really get much in the way of repeat appearances (or appearances at all) from the rogue's gallery.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

He is SOOOOOOO good. He's come a long way from the first time I saw him in GROOVE trying to find his way to an underground rave.

EDIT: Obligatory if you've not seen GROOVE, you need to watch GROOVE...even if you're not into the electronic music/DJ/rave scene....it's such a great story of a night out.

The bluRays set runs about $150, but honestly, that's not too bad for six seasons of content.

But this is more proof that Physical Media is still REALLY worth it for stuff you really like...becuase these streaming companies are getting bolder with what they remove....Amazon, Disney+, and Netflix have ALL removed "original" content from their services willy nilly with no explanations...so when you can GET the physical media...do it.

That's why I bought LOKI S1, STRANGE NEW WORLDS S1 & 2, and a few other TV properties on physical media (BluRay), and why movies I adore I buy in that format even if they are available on streaming or digital. I do not trust these massive corporations not to fuck us.

Plus stuff looks SO much better on BluRay than streaming.

On to S2. 4 eps in, great fun. Also fun spotting the TO, Hamilton, and Bramptom sites they used.

Say what you will, but I love this whole ass series (ROMULUS was one go the best films I saw last year; probably the best Genre film at any rate), so I'm super excited about this TV show.

Adding in Timothy Olyphant only makes me MORE excited about it.

I am so skeptical. I fear that the limits of an fx budget are going to seriously impede the level of action and suspense an ALIEN story needs, and we'll get predictable and predictably bad human drama bluntly filling time til the xenomorph shows up each episode. I want this to be awesome, I'm going to watch, but so so much skepticism.

Warranted for sure. But remember that a chunk of this show will reportedly be about the corporations that now run the world and their borders being more petty and enforceable than existing world govt ones, and how synthetics bleed into that. I think there will be plenty of meat beyond just "Alien ship crashes, chaos ensues", and Noah Hawley's recent track record with LEGION and FARGO allows me to have a little more faith.

But skepticism is healthy anyways.

Agreed re Hawley's skills, LEGION in particular he spun gold out of what could have been (still was at times) an utter mess.

That said, I can't help but think that 'corporations bad' has always been an underlying point to the ALIEN IP, as has the idea of synths as both wiling servants and struggling slaves. It's just that if that becomes the main focus well, who remembers CAPRICA? Or KRYPTON? Right, me neither.

...in contrast w TERMINATOR THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES where the skinjobs and the time travel war were front and center the entire time even if it took robot Summer Glau to make it work. Sure, the rise of Skynet was a subplot, but only a subplot. It's wasn't THE CYBERDYNE CHRONICLES. So ALIEN: THE RISE OF WEYLAND-YUTANI is a mistake i hope they aren't making.

From what I understand, and I could be wrong, The earth in 2122 doesn't real have govt's anymore, and borders are held and controlled by Massive Corporations (like Weyland-Yutani; which has existed since Peter Weyland created it in around 2023 so about a hundred years earlier.....though Yutani only bought in 50 years before) instead. I feel like there is a decent amount of fodder there for stories mixed in with synthetics and Aliens. I think it's more relevant in this late stage capitalist hell we all live in to be frank...LOL.

But yeah, time will tell if this is good. I hope so!

The Australian version of THE OFFICE is pretty good. It's not anything GREAT yet, but neither was US office in its first season.

The characters are good, people like Lloyd the IT guy stand out the most as being super interesting and always funny....the stand-in for Dwight named Lizzie is...fine...I think she's supposed to be funnier than she is...fun Side fact, she's one of the cult-of-Sauron people on RoP.

Anyways, worth it if you have a few hours to bang out the 8ep first season on Prime.

I'm two episodes into Black Doves. It's good. Kiera Knightly usually annoys me tremendously but it's very manageable thus far, something I never expected to say.
