430 pages into it, and let me just tell you that TtH will have to be quite something to be the top Malazan offering of 2008, at least if ICE keeps this up!:D

Hmm...the idea of a soul inhabiting a sword reminds me of Dragnipur...but aspected to Wind/Light instead of Darkness. Though whether the inhabitants are pulling a wagon along to keep it in front of encroaching chaos I somehow doubt. But perhaps the weapon, with its newly acquired soul, is some kind of counterbalance of some sort? I can't think of how that would work, any ideas? Or is it just crazy talk?

Sir Thursday

It doesn't have to be quite so complicated as Dragnipur. The Serc Ascendant was hurt and fled. Kyle's sword was already aspected to 'wind', which might as well be Serc, plus the ancestral connection (Kyle was running forward thinking he was saving one of his own people's gods) and bingo - the sword becomes the equivalent of a finnest.

I reckon Kyle will become rather a good swordsman suddenly. Hopefully he has a showdown with Greymane, so we can see how good he is

I have to say I was slightly disappointed with the depiction of Greymane as some massive, hulking, powerful warrior. We already have a fair few of those in the Malazan series. I had always imagined Greymane as more of a older schemer and tactician who also happens to be handy with a sword when he needs to be, a cross between Dujek Onearm and Kallor, if you will (though obviously without the genocidal tendencies of the latter), rather than Caladan Brood/Karsa-alike. But that's really the only thing. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by the way this prologue and chapter gripped me in a way that Night of Knives had mostly failed to do.

How many hulking massive commanders besides Caladan Brood do we really know? Unlike people like Karsa and Baudin, Greymane actually has an excuse. If you're big to begin with and you start marching and training wearing chainmail and wielding a giant sword... you're gonna get buff.

You also have to consider that there's something more going on with Greymane. He's annointed or somehow magical. He's able to bend iron bars and easily move stoneslab doors. He doesn't move in storm force winds and doesn't seem to notice extreme temperature differences.

Yes, he certainly doesn't just rely on physical strength. If he had gold skin he'd make me think of an uber-Gesler, to be honest.

Plus we've only seen him in this scenario. I'm sure if we saw him in a tent with military maps he'd demonstrate profound strategy and stuff like that. Likewise, if we saw him fixing a toilet I've no doubt we'd be all masterfully convinced he was a Arch-plumber.

Anyone recall Abyss old "Greymane facts"? Suddenly, after reading the first chapter, they don't seem as exaggerated.

I especially like how he just pops up and jams a sword thru the mage. Plus Kyle's observation that hey, he wasn't carrying THAT sword earlier.

- Abyss, must needs go repost Greymane facts now...

Wasn't it rather that the sword was gone later when they go to searcg the keep.

I mean this...

Quote

Only Greymane stood upright, his thick trunk-like legs apart and long grey hair whipping about from under his helmet. He motioned with his gauntleted hands, dividing the men into parties. Kyle wondered what he had done with the two-handed sword he had used against Shen, for the renegade now carried no sheath large enough for it – only a slim longsword now hung at his belt.

...but unknown if it means anything significant.

- Abyss, sword up.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. This is actually the kind of thing I mean. I was hoping that Greymane wouldn't be 'enhanced' by some sort of means, and that he would be just a regular joe human with no special powers, just a good brain on him and some mundane (i.e. non-magical) skills.

Hmm
I now expect ICE to keep him all mysterious throughtout RotCG, droping few hints, and then do his full story in the next novel--kind of like Trull in MT.

Just popping up to say that I liked the chapter much better than the prologue.
Great work from ICE! Well, I got a bit confused some way in all that diversion stuff that happened in the Spur, but I blame it on my language skills and my being easily bored by such action :D

The ascendant is definitely not Osserc and Greymane is all in all kind of cool, but Cowl I liked less than in GotM (we saw him there, right?)

Well, we didn't see him, technically. He was mentioned as an off-screen character when the CriG turned up in Darujhistan.

Nah, Fingers was the name of the guy talking to Crokus. Cowl was busy kicking Serrat's ass;)

You are both wrong and right Here is the quote: (Gm us pg 633)

Quote

The man's grin widened. "I'll escort you, then. And don't worry, you're covered from the roofs, too. Cowl's up there, damn his snakeskin hide. But he's a powerful mage, anyway. Serrat was furious, I hear. Let's walk, then."
Crokus let hte man take his arm and lead him away form the duel. The thief cast a glance over his shoulder. The woman was trying to disengage now, her left arm hanging useless and glistening in the gaslight. Her opponent continued pressing, silent as a ghost.
"Don't worry," the man beside him said, pulling him along.
"That's Corporal Blues. He lives for this stuff."
"C-Corporal?"
"We've been covering your back, Coin Bearer." The man's other hand reached up to his collar, which he turned back to reveal a brooch. "The name's Fingers, Sixth Blade, Crimson Guard. You're being protected, boy, compliments of Prince K'azz and Caladan Brood."

Not to worry guys I am here with the quote to save you both the trouble...:D

Oh and we did see Cowl from the above passage and this one it is implied who ambushed Serrat (GM us pg 553)

Two sharp points touched her flesh, one under her chin an the other beneath her left shoulder blade. The Tiste Andii froze. And then she heard a voice close to her ear-a voice she recognized.
"Give Rake this warning, Serrat. He'll only get one, and the same for you. The Coin Bearer shall not be harmed. The games are done. Try this again and you'll die."
"You bastard!" she exploded. "My lord's anger-"
"Will be in vain. We both know who sends this message, don't w? And, as Rake well knows, he's not as far away as he once was." The point beneath her chin moved away to allow her to nod, then returned. "Good. Deliver the message, then, and hope we don't meet again."

Enjoy this little flash back..
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.
Hinter - Vengy - DIE. I trusted you you bastard!!!!!!!
