Didn't have time to do this last night, sorry :(

Ok, here goes... (If you missed the bit about SPOILERS in the thread title... err, watch out for the spoilers!)

The prologue takes a leaf from Erikson's work by detailing events that happened millenia before the main events of the book. Denuth, a child of the Earth (and some kind of golem as well from what I can make out) meets the Bastard of Light Liossercal who has just gone up against one of the Azath. They're stood in the middle of a crater so you can guess how this one turned out! Liossercal has been badly hurt and Denuth ponders on whether this is the right time to kill him, 'Something must be done about these ancient powers before their antagonisms and limitless ambitions destroy all order once again.' Liossercal can guess Denuth's thoughts however and advises him not to try anything... Denuth tries to persuade Liossercal not to continue on this path but to no avail. Draconus approaches with Dragnipur (not yet forged, just a black Void) so Liossercal changes into his soletaken form (dragon) and leaves.
Draconus arrives and notes that Liossercal is near, 'His essence will be a great addition'. Denuth tries to persuade Draconus that Liossercal is not for him.

"I suspect that he may one day find that which he seeks."
"And that is?"
"That which we all seek. Union with the all."

Draconus decides to pursue Liossercal anyway, 'I offer my own version of union...' Denuth mentions Anomanderis but Draconus scoffs at this, 'I shall bring him to heel soon enough.'
Draconus leaves Denuth contemplating the endless cycle of violence being perpetuated and how it might be ended...

The first chapter is set on the Weeping Plains of the Bael sub-continent (where?) where the Warlock Shen is under siege from the Crimson Guard. He has held out for a year but a tunnel is being dug under the Spur (the Warlock's Fortress) and the siege is about to enter a decisive stage...
Kyle is a scout who was sold to the Crimson Guard by Nabrajan slave traders and it's through his eyes that we get to meet some of the main players and sense some of the rivalries.
To be honest, not an awful lot happens here (it's raining and Kyle spends a lot of time sheltering! A demonic attack is repulsed in spectacular fashion by Cowl and there's a little talk of the 'Ancient Ascendant who'd supposedly raised the Spur'
Kyle is called down to the tunnel by a soldier named Stalker, they are to be the rearguard for the push into the Spur. There's a bit of a wait while everyone gets ready. Kyle talks to a soldier named Ogilvy and the snippets of conversation make it clear that no-one really knows what's going on and 'This company seems divided against itself - the old against the new.'
Before they all go into the tunnel Stalker says to Kyle,

'There are those in this Crimson Guard who have wandered the land a very long time indeed. They have amassed power and knowledge. And I don't believe they intend to let it go. It's an old story - one I had hoped to leave behind.'

There you have it folks! :D I know someone, at Bantam, who may be able to help with the full excerpt. If I can get it, I'll get rid of this and put that up in it's place :D

Oh, wow. This seems like a very nice start for a VERY good book.

I'm anticipating atleast some Guards to become renegades against the prince. Inside fights within the Guard while old and new enemies pursue the Guard.

I can't wait!

Thanks for that. That's relatively interesting.

So that's where Kallor/Patch's signature comes from. 'Speak not to me of that upstart ... I will bring him to heel soon enough.'

Oh, oh this is sweet, thanks Deo, unfortunantly:

I'm certain that Liossercal is Osserc. It makes sense. I guess this also proves something. The most powerfull of the ascendants are actually able to kill an Azath. Impressive.

But why did Liossercal kill the Azath? Was the Azath guarding something? Was something interned inside it that Liossercal wanted? Are all the Elder Gods actually opposed to the presence of the Azath?

It does make sense. Firstly Osserc is planted dead in the centre of Liossercal. Secondly, Rake's real name is Purake, or an even longer version so it follows an already written/defined rule/possibility.

Plus the Liosan connection at the start. The Liosan were clearly named after Osserc or vice versa.

I wonder who Denuth is. His name is remarkably similar to Deornoth.

So

Osserc destroyed an Azath... that makes 3 dead and two born that we have seen in the series?

Denuth or whatever reminds me of the earth like creatures Quick Ben was saved by in his little encounter with the Chained God.

So evidently Draconus lost his damn mind and started trying to scoop up a bunch of Ascendants with his pooper scooper (dragonspur)... obviously he didnt get Osserc and he ran afoul Rake eventually also.

WTF is Osserc up to?

Coincidence? Or has Ian Cameron Esslemont been pinching names from Tad Williams (and then changing them)...

Wait. 3? 2... I always thought the one Iccy wounded and the one that died on the Jhag plains where the Jaghut-Tree (phalis?) is was the same one, and then the one in Lether.

In what context is Greymane mentioned/seen? Is he at this siege also?

I would expect, for the sake of Deornoth's brainz, that if Greymane had been mentioned at all, it would have been posted. Abyss as some sort of intellectual hard-on for Greymane.

I'm just asking because I thought I remembered Deornoth mentioning the day before that Greymane was also in the first chapter, before he posted this synopsis.

MoI, prologue, p. 40:

Quote

Then Draconus spoke, "Since the time of All Darkness, I have been forging a sword."

All darkness either means since the time MD brought the elements or since the time of wandering, which preceeds the Elder Times and the Holds.

So basically the events could be taking place at any point before Rake dragnipured Draconus.

But, seeing as Draconus was attempting to use the weapon even though it wasn't finished, I'm guessing it wasn't that long before the events of Korelri and Jacuruku.

I am well aware how long he's been forging it.
As usual, I'm just being my timeline-obsessed self.

one thing that bugs me though--I think I recall a quote being somewhere that Rake went with Killy to lean up the dying KE... and emerged with Silanah and Dragnipur. Which makes little sense, since this was waaay before the event of the Fall (no humans as such), so Draconus couldn't have altered the sword yet.
ofc, I could be wrong and he emerged with Vengeance instead...

Arse, I forgot to mention Greymane :(

He's with the Crimson Guard preparing to go into the tunnel, doesn't really say anything. I heard he was a Fist but here he is a lieutenant.

hmm
curious
So he's on the run from the Malazans and he jopins the CriGs?
well, with his legendary sworsdmanship i'm sure application wasn't a problem.. but is he really anti-Empire or just ver very very deep undercover?

Nice twist of the legends yet again if Osserc is an actual bastard of Light, instead of being all pure and handsome like the Liosan in HoC think.
