When does this first chapter occur, in terms of timeline? Now, or in the past?

there's a discussion of that in RG forum. If you fear spoilers, suffice it to say, it was just something that someone in BF HEARD ( i.e., a rumour), and those tend to exaggerate sometimes...

Jorram: that would hardly be the first character in the series who doesn't have his or her facts right.
Also, wasn't it just a rumour sort of thing in the BF.. the guy who said it hadn't been in the army or anything like that? I'm bit hazy on the details, been a while since I read BF.

Edit: Me slow.

@Jorram:
Spoiler

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Tnx alot, well deserved rep awarded :)
This info pushed me over the edge as well, TtH and RotCG pre-ordered for august (probably, but then again, who knows).
I liked NoK but i think RotCG is gonna be even better. The summary of the prologue and first chapter has awesomeness oozing out of every summarized word :p
Maybe its the long wait and anticipation but it seems that with every new installment, people on this board become more and more out of control and becoming like 'have-to-get-it-asap-no-matter-what'.
Or maybe im trying to make it sound acceptable to myself :p
I wonder what Greymane hopes to achieve. Revenge or this is the last place where he can go in relative calm. Somehow i dont feel that it's an undercover ploy. That's more easily done with someone who draws less attention to himself.
And laying waste to an Azath :o (assuming the crater was the Azath).
I can't wait for august, its so far off!

sounds interesting, wasn't overly bothered about this since I thought NoK was somewhat rubbish. It definetly got better as the book went on but it was for me the worst book malazan book by far(that include the K&B shorts).

Over time its impossible to ignore the potential in this however, and now we're getting traditional ancient prolouges involving one of our high-end Tiste hard arses.

Just hope the ian's writting style works for a long story, really had to force through nok, couldn't do that with a much longer book regardless of how interesting the plot is

Damn you Abyss, I was just about to say that! I bet that Liossercal was the "dragon" that was part of the creation of the warrens with K'Rul, though it would make sense for him to be Osserc as well... Could be that Osserc stole the name?

It seems to me that that prologue probably takes place early enough for Denuth and Liossercal to be involved in the creation of the warrens (after the prologue takes place, of course), if not the driving force behind the warrens of Denul and Serc.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but I just re-read the summary and assuming that last quoted line is accurate it sure sounds like Stalker is a lot more than just an ordinary criG soldier.

Arse, I forgot to mention Greymane :o

He's with the Crimson Guard preparing to go into the tunnel, doesn't really say anything. I heard he was a Fist but here he is a lieutenant.

Can you tell us what he looks like?

Welly welly well. Greymane's looking for some action with the CG. Previous links, past history? The plot thickens....

I don't suppose Ogilvy's (the soldier mentioned) first name/nickname is "Geoff"?:)

I need prologues and general stuff from TBH and ROTCG asap.

On a side note. I have just preordered both books from Amazon.

Aug for Rotcg and 30th of June for TBH.

GLEE!
"I think i was a bad person before. Before this time. I do not try to be good now but i am not bad. Perhaps if i try harder i may get a better hand dealt next time? But surely that makes it pointless? Perhaps i am good. Just good at being pointless. But that would make me bad. Bad at having a point. Ah…. I see now. I was nothing before, I am nothing now. I am bad purely because im pointless. "

I wonder whether this lends credence to the theory the Old Guard has Greymane lined up to supplant Laseen.

They're stood in the middle of a crater so you can guess how this one turned out! Liossercal has been badly hurt and Denuth ponders on whether this is the right time to kill him, 'Something must be done about these ancient powers before their antagonisms and limitless ambitions destroy all order once again.' Liossercal can guess Denuth's thoughts however and advises him not to try anything...

Denuth tries to persuade Liossercal not to continue on this path but to no avail. Draconus approaches with Dragnipur (not yet forged, just a black Void) so Liossercal changes into his soletaken form (dragon) and leaves.
Draconus arrives and notes that Liossercal is near, 'His essence will be a great addition'. Denuth tries to persuade Draconus that Liossercal is not for him.

Draconus decides to pursue Liossercal anyway, 'I offer my own version of union...' Denuth mentions Anomanderis but Draconus scoffs at this, 'I shall bring him to heel soon enough.'
Draconus leaves Denuth contemplating the endless cycle of violence being perpetuated and how it might be ended...

Isn't dragnipur that something that must be done so why does he try to stop draconus? or by his thoughts on the endless cycle are we looking at the founder of the nameless ones?

So this is where the guard went from Brood's army, interesting that means the prince is probably there and not in control of his own troops!!!
Any thoughts on whos side corlo, blues and the sixth blade are on and are there loyal "old" guards?

Also on the "Ancient Ascendant" who "raised" the spur could it be brood? moot point at best but still thought I'd ask.

Before they all go into the tunnel Stalker says to Kyle,

'There are those in this Crimson Guard who have wandered the land a very long time indeed. They have amassed power and knowledge. And I don't believe they intend to let it go. It's an old story - one I had hoped to leave behind.

Stalker is probably an avowed but what I'm interested in is the old against the new, what is it about are the old gone rouge or is Kazz in with it and possibly this is an attempt to ursurp lassen?
Everyday I ask myself, where has the peanut butter gone?

I'm sorry but these question don't make much sense to me even combined with the quote you add.

I'm thinking you may have added an "that" too many in your first question. IF so, Draconus needs power to drag the wagon. But just taking any and all ascendant isn't necessarily the smartest approach.

Guessing that it is in fact Osserc, if you killed him, the Liosan would be with out a god, the Liosan and Thyrlan warren would be without a guardian, possibly the warren of Serc would also be fucked and generally the balance on power would be offset.

The endless cyckle of violence is the elder times and their eternal wars. KCCM vs Deragoth and Tiste, Imass vs Jaghut, FAs against... anyone, TTTs vs... anyone, etc, etc. The elder times were a brutal era.

Denuth tries to stop osserc and considers killing him yet he tries to stop draconus doing the same I wanna know why?

Denuth thinks to himself 'Something must be done about these ancient powers before their antagonisms and limitless ambitions destroy all order once again.' does not dragnipur fit that niche?

He then starts "contemplating the endless cycle of violence being perpetuated and how it might be ended..."

Does that not sound like the speech those preists gave when they released Dejim Nebrhal? (Is that Clearer? oh and the other questions)

About Cowl, i remember in GotM that Rake "received a message from a foul mage who he'd thought a hundred leagues away, courtesy of Serrat." Perhaps he was on Bael?
