I wonder whether this lends credence to the theory the Old Guard has Greymane lined up to supplant Laseen.

Haha, Greymane the malazan CHE.

Communism for the Malzan Empire!!!

Anyways, i hope that's true.

One last thought, did anyone else have some bridgeburner nostalgia with the tunnel buisness outside of pale? And an ancient ascendent guarding an ancient castle.

I think a connection is supposed to be made, possibly devolping the theme in the Malzan empire that history repeats itself.

Kchain slave over the Jaghut slave over the T'lann Imass... as one piece of evidence. There's a bunch, i think the literary aspects of these novels are underestimated.

I just think it's an intresting theme being devolped by the writers.

My musings are at an end for now.
I'll be back later.

Just read the extract. Lieutenant Greymane???

This could cause all sorts of trouble from what we've heard! Apparently he was one of the original 20 who swore the vow to K'azz D'avore... and at this point the Guard is 99 years old. I'm sure he was recorded as being in Korelri more recently than that. And the Malazans have a price on his head too!

I recommend going for one labelled "Paperback", personally... but yes, they are sometimes very unhelpful ;)

If Liossercal really is Osserc, what's the bastard -part? Could mean anything actually. Sired by FL apparently, but given birth by whom? Mother Dark, or Tiam perhaps. A possible triangle drama between FL, MD and Tiama?

"Anomander! We are brothers!!!"

P.S. Damn these theories, but at least I get to practice my English.

According to the Draconean Family Tree (and we all know THAT'S reliable :D), Osserc is listed a "having no mother", while Rake, Ruin and Andarist "have no father"

I prefer the idea that Osserc could actually be Father Light.

Lol.... I can imagine.

Anomander: Osserc, any last words?

Osserc: Yes. I.... I am your brothers mothers cousins niece's former roommate.

Anomander:..... so what does that make us?

Osserc: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

@Apt

Yeah, that's what i used to think actually.

i just read this and I get the distinct impression that liossercal is not osserc, unless osserc has tusks of some sort, as liossercals tusks/large teeth are repeatedly mentioned. He seems almost jaghut like, suggesting he is possibly a child of father light and a nameless jaghut which is pretty interesting (if only to show that the tiste can breed with races other than humans)

Draconus is referred to as consort of night, and suzerain of night (which if your like me and had no idea what this meant click here), though he claims to no longer hold these titles. so draconus could possibly be the father of the tiste andii, and would seem to be the head of a subgroup of dark.

other points of interest, leiutenant greymane seems to have run to the crimson gaurd after betraying the malazans and koreli, he is referred to as stonewielder, and is rumoured to be very good. oh and the gaurd are beseiging a warlock who can hold off all of the mages present which includes cowl, which is fairly impressive. The gaurd are also referred to as having a team of assasins called the veil, under the control of shimmer, who heads the company besieging the fort.

cowl is referred to as one of the 20 remaining avowed, who had originally sworn the vow to the company's legendary founder prince kazz d'avore, and skinner is mentioned as the former head of the ninth blade, and there at least 32 of these blades... whether the 20 avowed means there are only 20 or not I don't know, but if there are only 20 we know the names of almost half of the remaining avowed, 8 by my count (skinner, cowl, iron bars, blues, black the elder, halfdan, jup alat, poll).

Thats all i can remember for now, though i will say that I really, really, really want to read the rest of the book now.

IH: did you name the Awowed from NoK that Temper recalls Dassem killing?

and one thing that arises out of this that I don't quite get: Is Greymane an Avowed?

EDIT: post # 2000!!! :D

Dassem killed 3 avowed, bartok, keal and shirder, so i didn't mention them as one of the 20 surviving them being dead... btw if someone has Nok could you check whether it is mentioned definitively whether lazar is an avowed or not (he's the crimson gaurd fighter mentioned in larkins tale), he's clearly famous but i cant remember if hes definitely an avowed, or if in fact he is still alive.

As to greymane being an avowed, I'm pretty sure he's not, but its not stated definitively that I recall, he is however on the top level for the new members of the CG.

ok, sorry, i got a bit confused. I thought you meant "one of the original 20 Avowed"
so, in that case, to correct my horrible wrongness, how many of them were there originally?

No idea, that statistic isn't mentioned, but judging by hard iron bars was to kill, i would be suprised if the original numbers of the avowed were that much higher, seeing as the only person we've seen who has taken them down is dassem.

According to Iron Bars there were quite a lot of them.

Hmm, it is mentioned that only 20 of the original avowed remain by kyle in the first chapter. And Greymane is not an avowed, all we know is that he joined the crimson guard recently.
