I don't like any of those programs... unless Battlestar Galactica means the original and best version which was superb. Has the new version got the same theme tune? That was brilliant!

I would say Battlestar is the most well done. Great story, extremely well acted, extremely well produced, not much tongue in cheek action(SG1 gives you a LOT of that), and a planned ending.
I've never watched Dr Who(being an American) and I've heard its good, but a show that goes on for 40 years? Is this the Truman Show or something?
Now Smallville was excellent for a while, but like Firefly(should have been), it's a WB show. Good actors, good story, but something is missing to truly make it great.

Lost lost itself over the course of some very slow and frustrating seasons

Not really; the weird network schedules is primarily what creates that slow and frustrating impression. Watch the DVD box-sets and you'll see that some of the episodes move a lot faster than you remembered.

Babylon 5 and Star Trek: Next Generation or Voyager deserve to be on that list.

Stargate: SG1 is my all time favorite. Looking forward to the movie coming out in July too!

you put Beastmaster on the list but not:
Hercules (which the beastmaster series was trying to cash in on)?
Xena?
X-Files?
Buffy?
and a personal underrated favourite of mine:
Space: above and beyond? - okay, i'll forgive this one, as few people seem to know about it, but the four above? - c'mon......

Charmed is on there, but no Buffy... shame. Also, X-files is great ofcourse, 2nd movie coming out in a few months time Also, I have seen Space: Above and Beyond Coco, and loved it but very few people actually seem to know it aye.
Still, SG-1 is the alltime best tv show ever, so vote goes there. Nothing comes close. New movie in July, with O'Neill this time can't wait.

Watching FIREFLY made me realise how poor so many other shows on TV were. It's such a pity it never got to expand on it's story. It had just the right balance of action, humour and mystery for an ongoing series.
I enjoy several of the other shows on your list as well. Stargate had it's moments, and got to a pretty high level once they got comfortable with the idea of the long story arcs. It's a very solid show, and one that i'll always sit and watch if i come across it on the tv.
Battlestar is a fine series too, and i like the dark tone. Some fantastic action sequences too. I just hope they know where they're going with it. If so, then it could be truly great.
That's what killed the X-Files for me. Good idea at the start, good actors for the roles, and great production, but it never seemed to know which way they wanted the show to go. Alien invasion or government conspiracy? Both? Neither? I got bored after a while.
I actually preferred MILLENNIUM. Much darker. It had Lance Henriksen. And some great individual episodes. But, like the X-Files, they just didn't know what the whole point of the show was and it just faded away.
For the whole notion of a solid story, and some fantastic characters, then I'd give a mention to BABYLON 5 as well. It did suffer from some poor production, some terribly hammy acting and dialogue at times. But the story was great and it had some brilliant aliens. It does look poor next to some of the newer series these days but it was the one that broke new ground and actually tried the multiple year story arc (Star Trek - DS9 owes it a significant debt).
Farscape was another show that had some brilliant moments, and could be truly surreal at times. It deserves props for the leviathan ship designs alone.
Of all the shows that I've watched, i've found that the writing and acting of FIREFLY could be so good at times, that i can watch them again and again. So my vote stays there.

I need my X-Files. So can't wait for the next movie to come out. My girlfriend unfortunately wants to go and that means I will have to pretend to be interested in making out with her and not watching the movie....
It's a tough life.
I drove through a tornado on my way to see the first movie!!! It was worth it!
