Maybe Gothos refering to her as a hag was a term of endearment.

i think i need to clear something up... the term 'overgrown hag' to refer to iccy's mom is used by the errant ("spawn of gothos and that overgrown hag"), and only the errant. gothos never makes any mention of who iccy's mother is.

Well, considering we've only met one overgrown hag so far in FoD, I'm betting that Olar Ethil is Icarium's ma.

I always thought Icarium's mother was of Thel or Thelomen Toblakai stock...

Spoiler

I seem to remember there was the very briefest of mentions of a Thel or Thelomen Princess waking up or something very like that, in FoD.

it was a one line mention, i believe... i still think that kilmandaros has the most evidence in her favour of any named character. until we meet a more likely candidate (thel/toblakai or not) i still think killy and gothos got nasty. possibly they'll encounter one another in Omtose Phellack in fall of light.

edit - yes, she's not TTT, but the origins of that race are not clear. she could have had a hand in their creation.

Its from Grizzin Farl's lonesome Chapter 8 POV, as he is about to share some purple drank with Caladan Brood, and reflecting on his title of "protector", after Draconus gave Feren the pregnancy test.

Quote

Before dusk descended into night, he had seen a lone figure walking up from the east. While it was true that chance could not be measured, this meeting to come was by no means accidental, and so in his mind he measured it out most carefully. Well to the west, a Thel Akai queen had been stirred from her eternal slumber, and her mood was still foul, no matter the efforts at placation.

Also, does this title of protector have any possible connections to the "Protectress" of Li Heng? Not like there are any, but has anyone noted anything?
Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.

The Eres'al could also be considered an "overgrown hag". And so could my ex wife!

Any one else get the weird feeling that Arathan is Gallan or has some connection?:)
I know Gallan is supposed to be In Karkanas according to Kadspala and Rise Herrat, but at the end of FoD he tells Fisher how he watched, but did not go down among those gathered to Hoods call. :)

As if he were there and not just relating the story secondhand. :p

Either that or its another SE red herring and Fisher was in fact talking to Arathan.:D

Now I have to re read MBoTF books to see if anything else pops out to lend yet more confussion to the pot. :p

And I caught the was Errastas bit on my Re-Read Jumped the gun on that one
And Karsa seems pretty shure that Iccy' was part TTT,
Maybe She was the TTT Azathanai makes Iccys OPness explainable.

This is what happens when I listen to Corvus Corax Sverker http://www.youtube.c...h?v=BH06aEoL1ls

Hi all:

After Reading FoD i started a malazan re-read and am now mostly through MOI, i found some clues as to Arathans identity in there. This made me quite excited as i had recently been lurking this very forum trying to work out who he was. so i thought id share my logic with you and hope im not shot down flaming!

On MOI bantam book paper back, pg 931, where Envy is discussing with an Imass i dont actually have memory of from my original read (its been a while) regarding how the female wolf god came to be within the Ay Baaljag:

"
The T'lan Imass turned her head 'who has granted the beast this edged gift?'
Lady Envy shrugged, smiling with delight at the oppurtunity to return such a gesture. 'A misguided sibling who'd thought he was being kind. All right, perhaps that was too simplistic an answer. My sibling had found the goddess terribly damaged by the Fall, and needed a warm-blooded place to lay her spirit, so that it could heal. Serendipity. The ay's pack was dead, whilst she herself was too young to survive in normal circumstances. Worse yet, she was the last left on the entire continent.'
'Your sibling has a misplaced sense of mercy, Lady Envy'
'I agree......'
"
Now around here, i got pretty excited as this was clearly menitioning Arathan and also reveals that he will live until the Fall. Further i remembered earlier that Baaljag had given Toc a vision of the god that saved her ages back, pg 308 in my same crumbly MOI"

"Then, standing before her, a figure. Cowled, swathed in roughly woven black wool, a hand - wrapped in leather straps, down to the very fingers - reachin out. Warmth. Welcome. A palpable compassion, a single touch to the creature's lowered forehead. The touch, Toc realized, of an Elder God. And a voice:.....(irrelevant) "

So there you go, Arathan is by this point a kindly elder god with an obsession for cowled woven wool and hands wrapped in leather straps. I dont have any conclusions beyond this point yet because my memory is still too shaky( and ive only read half of esselmonts books, I will rectify this when i reach them in my reread) to be recalling if a particular character meets that description, or if some connection is revealed in later interactions with the wolf gods, so i thought id throw it to you guys and see if you had any ideas or have some way of tearing this whole post to shreds! Also it may be that he is indeed a part of Quick Ben but i find the notion of another character out there more exciting

ps: I had a theory going for a while that it was Topper (half tiste andii, which arathan may or may not be. Has an obsession with being cowled and wearing things on his fingers, though Topper appears to be keen on green leather. Ultimately though i threw this theory away because of large scale character differences (unless Arathan has fallen in some way from his earlier kindly god image, ) and no obvious mention of assassin skills in Arathan (that i can remember, i also can only remember next to shit about Topper)

Since Toc "realizes" it's an Elder God, I'm guessing it could be an Elder who is not actually a god, and therefore Arathan as Ruthan Gudd still might make some sense. I've still got the majority of my money on him, though certainly not all of it.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Jaiden's post abou the Ay above brings to mind a long forgotten memory about the stranger who apeared from nowhere to save the last Ay. From the description it seemed it was a Shadow aligned person and probably makes a lot more sense now.....especially as at the time there was no mention of who this might have been.

Book? Page? Just curious because I remeber the guy that saved the last eres. Or rather, it was a small hairy big toothed homonid of some kind. But not an ay...its highly possible I just don't remember...

the stranger who appears with the hounds is saving the last tasse. this could be arathan as well, i guess, even later on in the timeline. maybe all the mysterious unidentifiable people who've appeared in memories/tribal myths throughout the story have all been arathan?
