Hi all:
After Reading FoD i started a malazan re-read and am now mostly through MOI, i found some clues as to Arathans identity in there. This made me quite excited as i had recently been lurking this very forum trying to work out who he was. so i thought id share my logic with you and hope im not shot down flaming!
On MOI bantam book paper back, pg 931, where Envy is discussing with an Imass i dont actually have memory of from my original read (its been a while) regarding how the female wolf god came to be within the Ay Baaljag:
"
The T'lan Imass turned her head 'who has granted the beast this edged gift?'
Lady Envy shrugged, smiling with delight at the oppurtunity to return such a gesture. 'A misguided sibling who'd thought he was being kind. All right, perhaps that was too simplistic an answer. My sibling had found the goddess terribly damaged by the Fall, and needed a warm-blooded place to lay her spirit, so that it could heal. Serendipity. The ay's pack was dead, whilst she herself was too young to survive in normal circumstances. Worse yet, she was the last left on the entire continent.'
'Your sibling has a misplaced sense of mercy, Lady Envy'
'I agree......'
"
Now around here, i got pretty excited as this was clearly menitioning Arathan and also reveals that he will live until the Fall. Further i remembered earlier that Baaljag had given Toc a vision of the god that saved her ages back, pg 308 in my same crumbly MOI"
"Then, standing before her, a figure. Cowled, swathed in roughly woven black wool, a hand - wrapped in leather straps, down to the very fingers - reachin out. Warmth. Welcome. A palpable compassion, a single touch to the creature's lowered forehead. The touch, Toc realized, of an Elder God. And a voice:.....(irrelevant) "
So there you go, Arathan is by this point a kindly elder god with an obsession for cowled woven wool and hands wrapped in leather straps. I dont have any conclusions beyond this point yet because my memory is still too shaky( and ive only read half of esselmonts books, I will rectify this when i reach them in my reread) to be recalling if a particular character meets that description, or if some connection is revealed in later interactions with the wolf gods, so i thought id throw it to you guys and see if you had any ideas or have some way of tearing this whole post to shreds! Also it may be that he is indeed a part of Quick Ben but i find the notion of another character out there more exciting
ps: I had a theory going for a while that it was Topper (half tiste andii, which arathan may or may not be. Has an obsession with being cowled and wearing things on his fingers, though Topper appears to be keen on green leather. Ultimately though i threw this theory away because of large scale character differences (unless Arathan has fallen in some way from his earlier kindly god image, ) and no obvious mention of assassin skills in Arathan (that i can remember, i also can only remember next to shit about Topper)
