  1. In Topic: Reading at t'moment?

Needed a pick me up after reading Chasm City and All the Birds in the Sky parallelly. Thought the former was a big step down - small in scope and focused on unpleasant (and, frequently, incompetent) little s**** - from the awesome Revelation Space. Just didn't care for the latter.

Reading Red Rising and Rai-Kirah 1 - Transformation now and am enjoying both thoroughly. They both seem to share some odd commonality too.

I can see Martha Wellshas written a lot of stuff. I got the first 3 books in "The Books of Raksura" series she wrote from an older Humble Bundle.

Anyone read them? First one's called the Cloud Roads. Sound sort of YA.
Read Death of the Necromancer a while ago. Found it vaguely Locke Lamora like but perhaps not quite as good. Not a bad read overall. I assumed, at that time, that it was a standalone but just found out it's book 2 in a series

A third of the way through Revelation Space and my mind has been pretty well blown.

Have also been limping through The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet for a while now.

Apologies for the thread necro. Here's where I am with my ereader monologue:

    • I much prefer dead tree books but live in a place where books can be hard to find or are prohibitively expensive.
    • That means that I've started reading ebooks, somewhat reluctantly, on an old work-supplied tablet (Samsung P6200). It's old but works except when I have to read outdoors. The reading outdoors part happens often and the glare is terrible.
    • I'd like to avoid buying from Amazon if I can (as a matter of principle). I certainly don't want to be locked into Amazon's proprietary format or into their book ecosystem. I've heard mention of ads (offers) and that sort of thing would seriously piss me off.
    • Tried buying a couple of books from Amazon so that I could transfer them to my tablet. Calibre with the appropriate plugin (I'm aware of DRM stripping) failed.
    • I've had my eye on the Kobo Clara HD for a while now but can't source it locally. I pretty much have to wait for a friend or relative to visit my neck of the woods from elsewhere. That wait has been ongoing for well over a year and shows no sign of ending soon.

I don't care if the reader is waterproof. I've held on to my tablet for eight or nine years now so durability is also not a huge concern for me.

I'd like to be able to buy from any store of my choice. I'd also want to save legally purchased books to a format of my choice (epub) onto a location of my choice (my local drive).

Apologies for the long story. Any suggestions on whether I should bite the bullet and get a Kindle or continue to wait? If the former, which model do I want?

The Caine books - Heroes Die, Blade of Tyshalle, Caine Black Knife, and Caine's Law - are science fantasy too although they don't take place in space, which seems to be one of your requirements.
